I was giving 1/4 in morning 1/4 in afternoon and 1/4 in evening. She said to give 1/3 in morning and 1/3 in afternoon and a little less in the evening. So that is what I am going to do. He also gets a little baby carrot late evening before bed. I do this so he does not get the empty stomach bile in the morning. He has always had a problem with that,. |
Follow vets advise. Winter months are tough due to less activity then warmer months. I weigh Cody on regular scale once a week, it's not a true reading like you get at the vet, but if he gains a Lb. I can see that, then cut back several kibbles at each feeding, He is a very hungry little boy. He gets very little commercial treats. Treats are fresh cooked carrots these days. |
My DD adopted a 9 year old yorkie(13 lbs) last February. She was free fed purina lamb and rice. She was a lumpy overweight smelly mess. We took a few months to cut her food(grain free, fish protein kibble) back to 1/4cup morning and 1/4 c evening. 1/2 cup total per day- no treats! She looks great now weighs 10.5 lbs- I don't think her original owners would recognize her. She is shiny, trim and hardly coughs and is able to walk a mile! |
it depends on the dog food as well how nutrient dense it is, chester is 10 lbs and not even half a cup a day on the acana |
New here Hi all, I am new here. I have 2 rescue yorkies. Miss Dog has been with me for 5 of her 6 years? Sam joined us just before thanksgiving. He is 4. Since SAMs arrival I can no longer let miss dog free feed. She is now guarding the food dish and has gained 2 pounds--up from 8 lbs to 10. Sam weighs about 6 lbs. How much food should I feed each dog? When I had big dogs I filled the bowl and put it away after 15 minutes. I never had a fat dog. Miss Dog is beginning to look a little pudgy. I appreciate any advice. |
I've just switched Dex to Acana (he loves it!) and he's getting 2/3 of a cup a day. He's 8 lbs and almost 9 months now. I'm being more careful now with treats, I don't want to encourage the hubby in his 'Porkie Yorkie' nickname for the pup  |
My Yorkie varies in weight from 8.8-9.? He's not the type of dog to eat food when you put it down, nor does he eat all of it. I can put a half cup down and he might eat a 1/3-1/4 and sometimes more. |
