Bully Sticks

There was a time I would give my now past girls chew sticks, hooves, pig ears, after reading how bad some of these are my little adopted boy has had no chew anything. After having Cody 14 months I have given him nothing to chew on and feel so bad about this. I see many members are giving their babies Bully Sticks, I saw Pet Supplies carried them so I got one for my boy. I gave him it tonight, it was about 5 inches long. Since he hasn’t had anything like this to chew I watched him very carefully to make sure he didn’t sallow the whole thing as he was so excited, also watched how much was chewed, not wanting it to get to small for him to sallow a large piece of it. After an hour or so I coaxed him with dinner so he would leave the bully stick and eat his food. When he was wolfing down his kibbles I took the bully stick away, it’s about 3 inches now. So my question is::::how many inches is it when you take it away from your baby. Codys is 3 y/o weighs 12 pounds.

I usually give them until they can't hold it any more. I guess about 2 inches maybe. I also recommend C.E.T chews. They soften like the bully sticks where they chew, but don't smell as bad. They are also supposed to be good for their teeth. My dogs love those and bully sticks.

Wylie's Mom 01-18-2015 05:00 AM

I used to use bullies and would take them away around 2" or so.

margaritaville 01-18-2015 05:23 AM

Sissy loves her bully sticks. Bubba not so much but will chew on occasion. I usually take it away when it's about 2 inches.

Rachael1983 01-18-2015 06:57 AM

Have you seen a bulky ring ? I use those and will take it away when I can't see it hanging from her mouth . The ring lasts a little longer than the sticks for us.

Yorkiemom1 01-18-2015 10:51 AM

I take mine away at 3 inches or so....but then I start out at about 10 inches long! I always initially give mine large or extra large chews so it lasts longer....the CET chews are about11 inches long to start out, and I watch when it get soft and chewy, then cut THAT mush off....I just ordered those "Beams"...those dried fish skins....have not found anything adverse about them as of yet.....I was initially worried about sharp pieces breaking off and creating a choking hazard.....does not seem to be a problem.....if anyone that is familiar with these, has any warnings, please share....

Thanks for your reply, I will also try the C.E.T. What is the full name, I will see what pet stores carry them, I have Pet Suppy's and Pet Smart in my area PetCo is an hour away, not a prob. for me, I travel where ever to what I can't get in my area.

Hi Ann, thanks for your reply, you say "use to give" may I ask why you've stopped. Several weeks ago I read pro's and Con' s about the Bully sticks, reason why I asked on YT.

Hi Rachael, I didn't know they came on rings. I would like that better for the same reason you do. I had to keep getting into Codys face to see if I could see the end of the stick, Cody was not to happy with momma's face is his, but I LOVE the stink eye lol. I will see where I can get the rings, I don't think Pet Supply carries it, I had asked where they were, the fellow took me to the isle, showed me the diff, size sticks, but no rings. Thank you for the heads up and your reply.

Hi Judy, I opted for the shorter one, mistake, I should have gotten the longer one. And I too cut off that mushy part. If I buy again I will get the longer ones. Thank you for your input.

I would like to thank everyone for their replies, I took away at 3 inches. This poor little boy was so happy to chew, I was scared he would sallow the 3 inches. I have little adopted boy 14 months now but am still learning about him. I don't know if his prev. owner ever gave him chew things since they never gave him any toys.

Jakester 01-19-2015 06:08 AM

Just be carefully with Bullysticks, Yorkies can break their teeth with them because their teeth are softer than most other breeds.

That's what I read, Pros and Cons, I was hoping for some feed back. I thought since Cody is a young boy 3 y/o, strong healhy teeth he would be fine with bully sticks. Thank you

The brand is Virbac. They are called Virbac C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Chews. I get mine from Petco so I'm not sure where else they sell them. They come in different sizes and I get the Medium.

kreuer 01-19-2015 07:55 AM

I would also suggest checking out chewy.com. A lot of times even with the shipping (4.99 I think) it's cheaper than in the store.

Cha Cha 01-19-2015 08:09 AM

Personally, I would be cautious of purchasing bully sticks from pet stores where they are stored out in the open for anyone to come along and handle. I know that seems oxy moron because of what bully sticks are made from, but quality is important. Make sure you are purchasing products made only in the USA, range fed, grain free is my preference too. Also, many pet store products seem to really smell when your pet chews on them. I mean, I don't think there is really an "odor free" bully stick, but some of them REALLY do smell gross. I think some are soaked in a "smoke" solution (that's an opinion not a known fact), and some do cause intestinal upset in dogs which is more reason to closly monitor your pups and take notes when giving them so you can be certain. I buy all my bully sticks from bestbullysticks.com I purchase odor free and I get the ones that are 12" long and the "thick" ones. They last a very long time. I never leave them lay out I always monitor their chew times 15-20 minutes at a time. I go in spurts where I'll give mine bully sticks, then I take a break for a while because they do seem to pull out their beards when they chew on a regular basis and I don't like that.

maxsassy 01-20-2015 04:44 PM

Usually when the bully stick get to two inches I throw it away. I want to see it in her mouth when she is chewing on it.

Yes this happened with my friends pug and Lovestodream's Callie...

Jakester 01-21-2015 09:54 AM

Has anyone tried Beef Tendons? Are they softer / safer on teeth?

Yep, I only do bestbullysticks or the Barkworthies ones from Chewy.com... I always get the jumbo or thick for 18lb Jackson. The 12" ones usually last him quite a while but I do take it away when it gets down to about 2".

Thank you, in the next week I will be in area where a Petco store is. I will take a look.

I see a lot of members use chewy.com. Never seeing what a bully stick looked like I didn't want to order on line. I never buy on line unless I have seen in person what I am looking for. Right now I am up in the air about bully sticks, I'm going to try some other chews that were suggested. Thanks for the heads up on chewy.com.

When the fellow showed me them I saw they were stored out in the open for anyone to come along and handle, that was a concern for me, but rethought saying it must be ok, everyone buys them, I did wash it off with plain water when I came home and gave it to him the next day when I knew it was dry. When I would buy hooves for my past girls they were sold the same way, open to the public, I did the same thing, rinsed them off first, when dry I would give to them. The bully stick had no smell while Cody was chewing next to me, when I cut off the mushy part it smelled a bit fishie, nothing can smell worse then hooves, iyiyi, what we endure for these babies. I know if someone I knew was eating something nasty smelling by me, I would either move or tell them to move lol, yet my past babies would lay on me or next to me and it was just "it is what it is" they were happy, I was happy:eek:. Thanks for the bestbullysticks.com. I would prefer thicker ones, this little boy sure enjoyed the chewing, I hated to take it away from him. I too would alternate, and what ever goes in his mouth I always watch what comes out the other end. So funny, years ago when I had my pack of 3 I never hesitated to buy treats, hooves of various types were always their fav. they chewed them every night, never a problem, today with all the wonderful technology we have, we now have to be so overly cautious when it comes to food and treats. Thank you for reply.

LOL, your reply brought back memories to me. I always say, "down on the farm" lol but it is such a big part of my life....Anyways, I replied on another thread about how "unnaturally natural" deer antlers are because I never seen dogs naturally attracted to them. However, after the farrier (horse hoof trimmer) would come and trim our horses's hooves the dogs always went nuts for any trimmings they could find. They'd carry off those trimmings like they just won the lottery and loved them. Funny to me now that they are a treat in pet stores.

lol, the visual of pups scurrying around snapping up horse hooves shavings too funny & cute. I saw your reply on the antlers, I saw them in Pet Supply several months ago. I was going to give it a try but wanted to do a bit of reading before giving to my pup. Again Pro's and Con's. Hooves, pig ears years back were so popular, now it's taboo, I could buy shoes faster these days then trying to select a safe chew not made in China for my boy. Thanks for sharing your little story bout "down on the farm".

alaskayorkie 01-21-2015 09:01 PM

I'm really frustrated with chew treats. The dogs need them, but none of them appear to be perfectly safe. They love bullysticks. I usually give them 4" pieces and take them away between 1-2". I also tried uncooked soup bones, and they love them but they are slightly sloppier to handle around the house if there's any meat on them.

Also, Eddie occasionally gets an upset stomach that I can hear rumbling. At one time, I thought it was bullystick but lately I think it's the soup bones. I stopped giving the soup bones.

Graneet 01-21-2015 10:24 PM

I give my babies peanut butter oinkies the love them. They have learned to pull the pb out. So i put some back in and freeze them.
