plate, pins and broken heart My little Ali fell off of the couch yesterday morning while Dad was "watching" her. grrrr She broke bones in her leg and spent the day at the vet being sedated and splinted while vet contacted an orthopedic surgeon who will do surgery this morning. I am sad, sick and a little angry. I miss my baby so much, today will be another very long day. Please keep Ali in your thoughts and if you have SUCCESSFUL stories about broken leg recovery please post. I know my vet is doing the right thing for her but this is so frightening. |
:( Oh no, it must be so very, very frightening for you...I'm so sorry :( You're both in our thoughts - no help or wisdom here (sorry!), just a huge, great big, enormous hug from across the ocean....love from Sally + Harry xx |
I am assuming this is the front leg? I have seen a few pups do very well with this surgery. The only pups I have seen not do well with fractured front legs are the ones where the vet only splints the leg There is only a 5% chance of that splint working on those bones in the front leg. Kudos to your vet for reaching out to a specialist and to you for seeing that she gets the proper care. I am sorry .. I know how hard it is to see a pup hurting; but I think you will be surprised at how well she handles it. Please keep us posted on her recovery! |
Thank you for your kind words. I need to figure out a way to keep busy today. I need to take a long walk but I have to find a different route. If I run in to all of her friends I will lose it! |
Oh no - I'm so sorry your baby is hurt! I know this is very difficult, but it sounds like she is in wonderful hands and I know you'll get her through this. Hang in there, I'll keep you both in my thoughts. |
Jersey broke his front leg when he was 9 months old ( soon will be 6 yrs old) he had surgery, pin and plate placed. He did fine it's just feels like it takes forever the 6-8 weeks. He had a complete recovery, you would never know it happened. Fast forward to 11/14 almost 5 years to the date , he broke his leg again!!! Still healing:) |
Poor Ali and you! Praying for a successful surgery and speedy recovery for your sweet girl. |
Poor lil Ali, poor worried mom, keeping both you and little Ali in my thoughts and prayers. (((HUGS))) |
Keeping you and Ali in my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure your baby is receiving the best care possible from the specialist. Hang in there. Sending Hugs |
I am so heartbroken to read this. I can only imagine how upset and worried you must feel. No matter how much we try to protect our little ones, accidents happen. I don't have any experience to share, but I am confident that, with your love and devotion to her, Ali will fully heal from her injury. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers. |
I'm so sorry it sounds like you are doing what is best though. I will keep you and your pup in my prayers. |
Oh no...how awful. I have never had an animal break a bone, but I send my best that she heals quickly. Many hugs! |
I have a friend who's Biewer broke her leg. . . She is back to normal and running around. . .sending good thoughts surgery goes well |
I am so sorry to hear this  accidents do happen and I am sure your husband will be forever more vigilant! I hope all goes well for your sweet little baby and will look forward to the updates. I would spend this agonizing time planning for your little girls recovery (busy that worrying mind of yours) and finding information on post op expectations and tips for how to 'take it easy' during that time. Bet there's some good stuff on here. Warm hugs and best wishes  |
Brokenhearted right along with you. I'm so sorry this happened but they will jump off furniture right before your eyes and even the closest guardian cannot stop them from doing it. Once they are up on furniture, the only way you can keep them truly safe is put a wall or something up to completely forestall them suddenly deciding to forego the doggie stairs and just suddenly jump off whatever they are on. I raised such a stink when Tibbe did it in the past, he rarely does it now but now, though it's rare, when he hears something he feels he must check out right now, off he goes and I'm the most careful Yorkie owner there is. Try not to feel guilty or angry with DH as these little acrobats are fearless of heights, think they can defy gravity and do whatever they think they can do. They have little judgment about personal safety and are so headstrong when they think they hear a strange noise, an intruder or something they must check out now. I'll bet the fixation heals well and before too long, she's right back to being her old self. Poor baby, I'll sure be praying for her surgery, her post op pain to be eased by her meds and that her full healing comes quickly. |
dog I am so sad this happened. Here's what you need to do. Go buy a little 3 step stairs and train your dog to use them. Absolutely no jumping off the couch. My spud goes up ànd down his little stairs. I have a rectangular footstool there he can climb up to. Your dog will learn quick about the stsirs. No more accidents,! |
Sorry to learn about your baby and this incident! Sending good thoughts for you and your baby! |
The vet called yesterday and said Ali's surgery went well but he wanted to keep her there for at least one more night. I hope we can bring her home today, the house is so sad and quiet. Ali is one of those yorkies that thinks she can fly so keeping her safe takes a lot of work. I feel terrible that we failed. Stairs don't work, she runs down our staircase 2 steps at a time. The accident happened because she slipped from the couch while barking at the gardener. We have our work cut out for us, she will need to be confined and she hates being crated. I just want her to come home, I will hold her 24/7 if I have to! I broke my ankle in 2013, have a plate and pins. My husband thinks Ali will be easier to care for than I was. We shall see  Thank you for your kindness, insights and advice. |
:) You're a sweetheart - and Harry + I are still thinking of you both, of course!! :) If they're 'flyers', then they're flyers....Harry is, too. I've trained him to within an inch of his life as to what he can or can't do....but there's always that odd time (with us, the window cleaner and 'The Man At Number 5...?!!!?) Hoping and praying you get little Ali home really, really soon - and that she's a better patient than her mummy...!!! :p :D Sally xx |
So sorry to hear about your babys fall, if you have a stroller Ali could be safe in it and you could stroll Ali around every were you go even for a walk for a change of scenery. I sure will be praying that he heals fast. |
Yes the stroller idea is popular. LadyJane was the first time I heard of it but it is a very clever intervention. Good luck in your recovery!! |
Glad the surgery went well! My Cookie is a wild child and when she had her CCL repaired, I used the stroller as yorkiemini said. She was in that thing for 6 weeks and loved it! When she was free to be out of it, she kept trying to get back in it. It was SO funny. I DO recommend that, if you use a stroller, you secure her well. They can get hurt jumping out. You of course can cover it (close it), but I didn't have to do that. She was happy to be moving around with me from room to room: but she was leashed in, of course. :) At night I would put it right next to my bed. Everyone who knows Cookie could not believe how well she adapted to it. |
I am so sorry about Ali's accident, but hopeful that she will make a full recovery. The stroller sounds like a good idea and a way to keep her close and comfortable while she is restricted. |
Dogs are very resilient. I see dogs with broken legs, pelvises and jaws go on to live happy normal lives. I don't know if it's a Yorker thing but mine seem to think they are indestructible too. Hugs to your little one for a speedy recovery! |
1 Attachment(s) Well, Ali is home. It is wonderful having her back but we have a long road ahead of us. I think the whole experience has traumatized her. She cried nonstop when we picked her up. (more guilt) She had the cone on her to prevent chewing on her splint but I removed the cone. I can't cuddle with her with a stupid cone on. I keep her attached to me via harness and leash 24/7 so I stop any chewing attempts. Good thing we are retired! Lots of follow up appointments ahead, first one in 4 days. She whimpers a lot, breaks my heart. She has pain meds and antibiotics. Yes, we have a stroller that we had for our Shelby who was allergic to bee stings AND hated walking. Today we took a short walk, I carried Ali. It was good for her to get out, seemed to cheer her up. Me too. This is hard but we will manage. I am thankful she didn't fall on her head. I love this little dog so much, she made me smile again after losing my Shelby. |
Oh, Lord, that picture just broke my heart - again. You can't help but love and be protective of these little Yorkies; but they are SO hard to keep safe the way they think and live their lives. You can only train them daily on using the doggie steps and make that muscle memory to go down the steps the main thought they have most days, knowing that any day they might just react and jump anyway but even my Tibbe got well-trained to use his steps except for those 2 or 3 times a year he bails off the couch or chair and my heart leaps into my throat. But that all that dedicated, daily training we did saves him all those other direct jumps! I will be praying that these next 6 weeks go fast and as easily as possible for sweet little Shelby and you all. After that, maybe, maybe it will get a little easier, at least I hope so. |
Oh poor baby the picture is heart breaking. That cast looks like it weighs more than she does. It was hard keeping Buster quiet after his LP surgery but it sounds like Ali has a great nursing staff to look after her. Sending prayers for a smooth and quick recovery. |
Poor precious baby and mom. Ali is in great, loving hands. I hope her recovery goes fast and smoothly. |

How's little Ali today? Praying she feels a little better day by day.... |

The cast looks so big because Ali is all legs! She is just 5.5 lbs but very tall. It's fun having a little big dog that can walk and hike, not fun that she thinks she can fly. I took her out in the stroller this morning and she complained about half the walk. We saw 2 of her best friends so that cheered her up. She has to get used to being contained and I have to get used to hearing her complain. ugh She has to be dropped off on Thursday and be sedated for new xray to be sure healing is going well. THAT is going to break my heart AGAIN. |
