My 6 Month Old Yorkie Puppy HAS a BIRTH DEFECT :confused:i AM GOING TO be brief and not cry all over my keyboard.Previously we had 3 shih tzu's. They lived out their lives of about 12 and 13 years each. They are on my mantle in an urn to be buried with us one day. I have had dogs all my life, & keep them forever. We bought a Yorkie puppy in 8/2014. He was the one out of 5 who "chose me." At 4 weeks he walked by my leg and rolled over so submissive, so I knew he was my guy ! I visited him every week over the next 5 weeks and then brought him home. Little Wilbur is the light of our lives. I put him in my purse and took him everywhere with me ! He is 6 months old now, 4#, and spunky, but started to walk "crooked ?" Our regular vet told us NOT to worry about it, just a couple of weeks ago ! My gut told me to get a 2nd opinion because it is so much worse. It looks like a huge growth or swollen area was on his left side. Dr. Curie was my choice, as he has years of experience and has an excellent reputation. We spent about 1 hour there. He x rayed Wilbur, watched him walk, and physically examined him. He sat down with us to show us the x rays and explained that Wilbur has a birth defect. His spine is VERY crooked, and the vertebrates are ALL fused together. His discs are hardened. The lump on his side is actually his severely curved spine. He consulted a canine neurologist and BOTH agreed that this is not fixable ! I broke down in tears. What a horrible diagnosis for this loving, little dog ! He offered options, and said his life would be short, due to this severe defect of his spine. He said that Wilbur COULD become paralyzed when he gets his next growth spurt,or he will one day be in terrible pain. I told him that HE chose me and I was going to take him home, play with him and love him as much as I can. I conveyed the diagnosis to the breeder, and got a very skeptical response. Wilbur's parents should not have any more puppies IMO. WHY cause any other person, such grief, even if it is rare ? I, personally have not felt pain this intense since I had to bury my Mom. The other dogs were different over the years, I was busy, and not 100% focused on them. I am retired and focused solely on the joy of Wilbur ! I pray that I will get through this ordeal ! |
Oh my gosh, I'm so very sorry to hear of this diagnosis! Wilbur sounds so precious to you, and I feel terrible for you as I can tell your heart is breaking over this. I know you can give him a wonderful life, no matter how long or short it is -- I just wish it was going to be long for the both of you. That breeder should fully refund your money to you - is she going to? And you're correct, she should not breed that pair again if this is genetic. |
How terrible, I know for me, I would love this baby boy up, spoil him beyond spoil, give him the best you can. For me, once I get a puppy it is an instant bond, I will do what ever is necessary to keep him happy and healthy. My heart is bleeding as I know yours must be too, knowing you may not have him long. I know the over whelming pain in your heart when we loose a beloved pet. How very over whelming for you to know of this very serious illness. Stay strong for little Wilbur, dogs feed off our feelings, when we are sad, depressed, anxious they pick up this, you want him to be a happy boy for the time you have him. You have to positive around little Wilbur, as hard as it may be. I will keep both you and your little boy in my prayers to keep you strong and to give Wilbur the longest, healthiest life possible. (((HUGS))) |
Oh my gosh how very terrible! Did the vet give a name to his condition? And I suppose I would want to know why it wasn't noticed earlier? I also think I might go see a specialist preferable at a teaching hospital, to see if truly there are no options available to you and your boy. There might be some alternative treatments available to you and your boy. Acupuncture to help with pain, chiropractic, and maybe some swimming therapies are all things I would look into and ask my specialist about. |
How heartbreaking to read Wilbur's story and prognosis from his birth defect. Have you followed up with your breeder or has she responded any further? Please keep us updated how is doing. :( |
Vs a Vs the breeder. It is quite hard for me to fathom why a deformity that was present from birth was not noticeable until 6mths old. Not only did the breeder miss it, her vet missed it, and pardon me but your vet missed it! You have been let down by not only the breeder, but by the veterinary community at large! :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown It is stories such as this that make me very angry, which might not be of any help to you, but still there it is. Of course this is given that the medical condition *what-ever it is* was something that would have been noticeable if not at birth by at least 8wks old. If that defect is genetic, I think I would document the whole report, Xrays, professional opinion etc, and send a registered letter to the breeder. I would ask for full return of money back given the exigent circumstances, and if their was a failure to diagnosis such a condition on the breeders' vet part I would really push for that money. You should not have to suffer the burden of such pain! That is my opinion of course. |
I am so sorry for this terrible dx on your baby boy. I agree with Gemy, to get together all reports and X-rays and send a letter to the breeder. You deserve your money back as you will be spending lots more before this tradgey is over. I pray that your baby boy does not suffer. |

This was suspected from about 4 mo. on, and our regular vet said it was how he stands, and that we were seeing things that were not there. I am DONE at that office, & we went there for 32 years with our pets ! |

We already have about $600. in him for tests, etc. I am 62 and have had dogs for about 25 years now. I have learned that they need their own "bank account." When emergencies arise there is always what they call a Care Card, which is a charge card for vets and human medical, but that still follows u. Good or bad times, I faithfully put at least $50. per month into a separate savings acct., which is kept for the dogs. They usually stay well, so I have $ saved for heart worm checks, meds, teeth cleaning, etc. I am very fortunate to have a 1 acre fenced in yard, which only my dogs enter, so no neighbor dogs pooping to spread worms or germs ! We have never had 1 dog over the years who had worms ! The acct. works well for the dogs and I usually always have the $$ put away to treat them. I look at little Wilbur and feel so sad. There are no more tears to shed ! |
I am so sorry for you and little Wilbur. Just keep loving him for whatever time he has, and giving him the best care you can. Prayers are with you. |
