Sugestions Please 1 Attachment(s) My little Prada is going through her first heat cycle at 10.5 months. Now before you say WHY SHE'S NOT SPAYED, I'll tell you why. Prada had to have an expensive sujury bout two months ago so I couldn't do both. My question is, how do I keep her safe from my male dog? I been taking turns keeping them caged because he's hunting her like prey. He will follow her none stop when I let them out (watching them of coarse). He has also gotten aggressive with us if we touch Prada. He has bitten my son and daughter ( no broken skin) and has tried to bite me twice. This is VERY unusual because my Polo is the sweetest lil Maltese ever. It's Prada that's the wild one. Is this natural behavior for a male dog to act around a female in heat? Oh yeah I've been putting Prada on onesies also just to be extra careful. Is there anything else I can do? |
I just went through a heat with Lily. Sadly this lasts approximately three weeks. I don't have any male dogs so I didn't have issues. I did notice Lily acted really different. But she's back to herself now. Thank goodness! As far as the male, he is going to try to get at her all the time. That would drive me crazy! I don't know how you would keep them apart. Hopefully someone can give you advice on that. Could he stay with a family member maybe? |

A male dog's behavior can change radically around females in heat, and yours are very close together being in the same house. Females change too, but my experiences have been that their normal behavior returns when the heat is over, thankfully...at least mine did. I hope you can hang in there til it's over, with some sanity left. ;) |

Your going to end up having an Oopsie and with the issues she had she absolutely should not have a litter of puppies. You need to make an appointment now to have him neutered! A female in heat can make a male dog do anything to get to them even getting them selves killed. A diaper will not help and a belly band will not help they need to stay completely separated. She does not need to be outside by herself period! |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/4508580-post8.html You need to be concerned about what happens if another pup comes along, perhaps a very large one, and she ends up with huge puppies. If she gets pregnant and needs a c-section, you are looking at another major surgery cost not to mention the fact that she could die if things go really bad. You really need to listen and learn here! BEFORE you have a disaster. |
Yes a belly band can help but is not be a sure way of prevention by any means. You need to be very vigilant in keeping them separated and the belly band or some sort of cover on your female at all times when they are together. You can not take your eyes off of them for a minute even during potty time because that is all it will take. Its probably even best if you keep one or the other preferably your female caged or behind a gate until she is through with her heat. If you cage your male be prepared for him to bark and whine if the female is not within eyes view. There will be a time when they will do whatever it takes to mate. Usually days 10-15 of her heat because this is the time when she can become pregnant but it can be earlier or later as well. So, you must keep them separated. If you do not want an accidental breeding than you need to find a sure way to prevent it. Also make sure that others in the home must keep them separated also. |
