5 wk old yorkie! help 1 Attachment(s) Hi everyone, sorry I have did not post a introductory first post. But I am in need of mayor help. I just took a 5 wk old yorkie from a not so pleasant situation. But I have lil idea what to do with her now. I bought a comfy bed, supplement formula, wet dog food just in case. She is a giant crate. Like the ones used for full grown bulldogs. In the crate I have a pee pee pad on one side and her bed on the other. In her bed she has some toys. She is doing well holding the pee and poo. No accidents in her bed. Some when my daughter plays on the carpet. She sleeps all day and up all night. She cries all night. It's driving me nuts. She eats a mix of the formula and wet food. Doesn't like water. At night I move her from the bed to the pee pee pad and she goes. What else should I do. 3 nights of no sleep for me. I am going nuts. |
First of all she is too young to be away from her mother and that is why she is crying so much. You need to have patience with her. I hope someone else has experience on here with a baby that young and gives you advice. Food and water should always be kept out for them at that young. |
Sounds like she us eating well and it's just the night time crying that's the issue? I brought ZoE home at 6weeks old. And I lasted until the 3rd night and I couldnt take the crying anymore. I was waking up holding her until she got to sleep and then carefully laying her in her crate and then climbing back in bed myself. But as soon as she realized she was alone, she'd start crying again. By the third night I was exhausted, so took her to bed with me and she's been there ever since. |
Oh gosh, this is def a tough situation...and precarious bc of her being *such* a young age. Please, please, please be very very careful and attentive bc if she got sick, or something goes wrong - it would happen very fast and could be life threatening at this age, unfortunately. She needs a lot of warmth, companionship, and attention at this age -- and most importantly, frequent feedings. I'd probably get a warming pad for her crate so she stays nice and warm...but make sure it's safe and wrapped up so that she can't chew any part of it. Get some stuffed animals, including a Mom sized one, and put them in with her. You may need to actually have the crate on your bed with you, I dunno. I can't imagine how she'd stop crying at night without having someone near as that's what she needs at her age. I'd get her to a vet for a check up ASAP! |
Wow, sounds like you rescued this little baby. Along with the frequent feedings already mentioned, get some Nutrical to have on hand. Also, put her crate on a chair next to your bed so she can see you--or put the crate on the bed next to you. Good luck! |
When my baby was six weeks old, I had a small pet carrier. I would put that in bed with me at head level with puppy in it. I would sometimes put my hand in carrier with him. This helped a lot until he realized he was going to have to sleep in there. When he got older I put the small pet carrier in a large cage such as the one you have for the bulldogs. Leave door off small pet carrier when it is in the big cage. |
Make sure you know how to prevent and how to spot hypoglycemia, and be ready for a trip to the ER ASAP if you see it, as they are really fragile until about 10-12 weeks and can go downhill in the blink of an eye. Keep your pup inside so she can't pick up parvo or other diseases from other dogs/cats/animals that have been in your yard/apartment grounds/etc until she has gone through all her puppy shots (I don't think you'd even begin them until about 8 weeks or so, and they're usually 4 rounds). And I second getting a checkup from your vet. |
And what a cute pup you have! |
She is very cute but doesn't look like a yorkie to me but haven't seen many at 5 weeks. This pup was taken from it's mom way way to young so it's going to have issues and your going to miss out on sleep, it's like a new born baby. She needs to be fed every 3 hours and not left alone until she's at least 12 weeks old. You need to know the symptoms of hypoglycemia and how to treat it. Keep her away from places other dogs go. Dont get her first shots until 8 weeks. |
I know this is early to not have her mom..but there was no choice when I got her. It would be nice to hear somethings that may help. Not just judgment of why I have her. She's eating ok! And seems like she is good. Just don't know how to handle the crying at night. And also the feedings how many times. What can I do to make her life better! |

Aw poor thing. Major thing to remember is the immune system is also very fragile at this stage. Wash your hands before handling her and make other people too, especially if they have pets of their own. I would also only use potty pads and not put her outside at all, lots of germs can live in your lawn. I agree with a vet check too. Just like a newborn baby she will probably cry at night for awhile. Good luck! |

Hum thought i posted earlier my i pads playing games on me i guess. Maybe get a stuffed animal the size of mom and if you can rub mommies smell on it. Or put your smell or if your daughters holding it a lot hers. I would put the crate near your bed so you can reach over and rub her. My pap wasnt as little but she also would cry at night. I also had a bed for her in the crate and she hated it to. I would put a pad in my bed then a towel and cuddled her. Yea she was spoiled but if she started moving on the puppy pad she would go to potty. Never had an accident. She didnt have the hypoglycemic issues yorkies do. So your baby may need food during the night to . She is adorable. You will do fine once you get a routeen. She will learn you and you her. Sounds like your prepaired for anything. Keep up the good work. |
1 Attachment(s) We did it we did it! The combination of daddy's towel, warm bottle of water, ticking watch, and a stuffed animal got it done. She slept from 1230 to 7 am. And to make all of it better she held her pee all night. When I took her out I immediately put her on the pad and she went enough for 3 of her lol. Thank you do much for all you help. Sorry if I was a little snappy, I just wanted her to be happy and comfortable as well as get some sleep. I have a 3 year old as well. Go to school over time so sleep is required for my survival. I'm so happy. I've never seen a puppy like Mia. She really is amazing. Controlling her pee at 5 wks is great. She's also eating a mix of wet food and formula. I'm a very relieved and happy mama. So happy I took her out of the negative situation! Now I gotta get her looked at by a vet asap. My daughter is sick and its freezing here in coconut Creek but as soon as I can I will! Thank you again everyone! |

Btw, how much does she weigh? That's one thing you really want to keep track of at this age, to make sure she isn't losing and is gaining properly. I always used a postal / kitchen scale. |
That is awesome. Lol you tickle me. When all else fail throw all ideas at once swwet. Wow held her potty so you g that is amazing. With everything arounder itprobably felt like being with her liter and mommy. Happy for you. |
Glad to hear she is doing better. When we got Sissy, Bubba was already housebroken and sleeping in our bed. So every night she threw a fit and we finally put her in our (their) bed. We were afraid she would have an accident so we went to home depot and got a large plastic drop cloth that is used for painting and put that between the bottom sheet and the mattress pad. Cheap and it works. |
Glad to hear you've worked it out. It takes time for both of you to adjust. Super glad to hear you're going to be taking her to the Vet for a check up. Good luck, you've been given great advice! |

Your post made my day. I felt so bad that you were getting a negative view of yt as I believed everyone was trying to be helpful but sometimes that passionate love for the yorkie breed can come across as a little critical. Thanks for sticking with us and I hope you will keep coming back to contribute to the wonderful mix of people on this website |

Don't be afraid to come back. We don't all bite. ;-) good luck and post pics! ! Mandy |
I am so sorry for all the goofy mistakes in my post. I use an i pad and it sometimes leaves letters out. Or like my phone changes them. Got to be more observant before posting. |
Welcome to YT, glad to see puppy is now settling in and you are getting some sleep. Poor lil baby taken from it's mom way to early. Don't get me wrong, not blaming you, blame goes to the person that breed her female, for what ever reason, what ever the circumstances breeder must let puppy go. My heart goes out to this little puppy, taken away from mom, missing her, she is just an infant, at 5 weeks old has to adjust to no momma. Pups at 12 weeks go through the same thing, crying for their momma's. I think you were very courageous for taking on such a big responsibility with a small child that needs your attention also. It's a big responsibility caring for a 5 week old puppy, asking for YT advise was a wise choice on your part. Your puppy is just precious looking, thanks for the photo of her. Hope puppy's non crying at night continues to improve. When I had lil babies it took about 5 days for them to adjust to no crying at night. Please keep up updated on her life with her new family. Puppies although a lot of work are so cute and funny little clowns. Good luck with your new lil girl. |
She's missing the warmth and closeness of her mom as well as the companionship of her litter mates! Poor baby! You have become her mom, so until she's able to be more independent, I would keep her very close, even snuggled. This may seem difficult now and very time consuming but the rewards will be great when she's finally able to show you how much she loves you by following you everywhere you go. Be patient with her. The reward to you will be a devoted companion for as long as she lives! |
How is it going. Still good? |
Hello everyone! Things are going well. Got Mia looked at she is a healthy pup. Unfortunately she is even younger than we thought. About 4 to 5 week now. It's terrible that she is that young but well she is handling everything rather well. Currently sleeping with my boyfriend. We were told to give her nutrical, royal canin for babies. We bought her a crate that is her size. So far so good. She woke up once last night. Put her on the pee pee pad and back in her crate. A couple of nos later and she was asleep. We were finally able to sleep without the tv on. And she slept without the bear, the towel or the clock. Only my boyfriends shirt and a warm water bottle. I'm very happy that she is a good dog. Alot of money is about to be spent on her. And it seems that she is a very good pup. |
I can only hope you have reported the person that let a less than 4 week old baby leave its momma and siblings......regardless of the fact that it is illegal in all States I am aware of, it is unethical and downright cruel and abusive. Just remember you are dealing with a enfant that has not even actually been weaned, and you are dealing with that now, as well as all the issues that will present themselves later as a result of the separation. Keep her warm, or any nutrition she ingests will not be absorbed...she is able to regulate her own temp at this age, but you still want her warm and not in any drafts. Good food choice, in my opinion. Good luck and praying for this baby, as well as patience for you. |
What happened that this puppy couldn't stay with it's mother?? |
Mia and 5 other siblings were abandoned and found by jerks. She and prince ( her brother) are within my family now! Not much I can say since they were going around selling the for whatever they could get. I took Mia. And my cousins took prince. They didn't look well. And the people looked despicable. I didn't get a name or anything. It was like a drug deal it was terrible. But I and my family are very happy to have them! |
