Should I put collar on him?? Hi my Roman who is 7 months and old and under 6 pounds is walked using a harness with his ID tags on, he is also chipped but he does not have a collar. Do your yorkies wear collars around the house or just wear collars all the time. There are some lovely quick release collars which are safe so I was wondering what do you do. I was also wondering what is the purpose of wearing the collar (sounds a dumb question:eek:) at home/daily 24/7. Should I have a collar on him? I'm a first time Yorkie mum so would be interested to hear your view :dogwalk: |

I don't like collars, but it is necessary to keep his tags on at all times. If he should accidently get out you can be notified immediately. I think most people want to do the right thing and return them for a short window, but then "fall in love" and decide you were careless so they should keep the dog. Also microchip, but tags very important. |
All my dogs have always had a collar with their ID tags, name & my phone #. I leave them on 24/7. They would NEVER tear off on me, but hey, ya never know, better safe then sorry. They were walked using a harness. My lil boy has a collar 24/7 with ID tag, his name & my phone #, he is also micro chipped and that tag is also on his collar. When he is walked I use a harness. As long as you can fit your 2 fingers between pups neck and the collar it is ok. The collar cannot be snug. Every one has their own opinions about using a collar. I choose to use one for tags and they are cool looking. |
Mine don't. But if I did it would be a breakaway cat collar. |
I only use breakaway collars when Galen is running around the house |

I would use only a break away cat collar for tags. There are many accidents that happen yearly....especially Yorkies hanging themselves from collars when their tags get caught in something (like the slat type openings on pet carriers), or they struggle and get the collar caught in their mouths like a bit on a horses bridle, etc.....if you must have a collar on the pup, please use a break away collar. |
Dinky usually has his harness on, but we always take it off when we leave him alone in his crate. I have that fear too that he could get himself tangled up somehow. |
Collars are EXTREMLY important for id tags never for a leash. Most people are not going to check for a chip and it will take them longer to finally take the dog to be scanned so you are much more more likely to get your dog back and faster if something happens if they have a collar with tags. Mine wears her 24/7. |

I always advocate owners use a break away collar for safety's sake.....I can only imagine if you happen to be that ONE person that comes home to find their adorable, precious baby, hanging dead by that collar caught in the baby gate or the play pen, or the threads on the carpet, you will wish you were in the group that had lost their baby outside without the collar. |

I let my babies go without the harness. But never thought about them getting out. What does it cost to micro chip? |
All of my dogs have worn collars since they were puppies. I have never had an issue with a collar. You must make sure it is properly fitted. I use leather collars with a buckle. They are pretty thin (3/8") and they have tags on the collar. The only time the collars come off is for grooming. |

I have a slight collar obsession. So yes Jackson almost always wears collars so I can justify my expenses LOL... no, but I do take them off at nighttime though to go to sleep. I just feel it's more comfortable for him. |

He sleeps in my bed 98% of the time, and my bedroom door stays closed so I know he doesn't go far. |

Penny is 7 months old now, but when she was really little we didn't put a collar on her in the house. I suddenly had a realisation that there is a tiny chance she could run out the house, the baby gate could be left open, I don't know. She wears a buddy belt harness when we go on walks but wears a collar at all times with her ID tags on it. It has a buckle but is thin and soft and properly fitted. We is microchipped but I feel like if someone found her, the chip wouldn't be their first thought, they would check the tag and just call me or bring her home. Plus it's an excuse to buy pretty collars for her :) |
I keep a collar with ID tags and info. Microchipped for backup (be sure to register it) and then for neck safety during walks use a harness. |
Lacey has always worn breakaway cat collars with her ID tag. She is a would be escape artist. I live in an apartment and do have a gate at my front door, but twice I have been careless with the gate and the next thing I see is Lacey trotting down the sidewalk happy as can be. Also with apartment living, there are pest control and maintenance people that come in when I'm not there. I worry about them not shutting the gate and her running out when they open the door. I even take off from work if I know someone is coming in to my apartment for maintenance. Lacey getting out is one of my worst fears. |
Nightmare with collar this morning I am going to give a resounding NO to the collar. I read this thread a couple of days ago. My husband had been wanting a neck collar for the id tag because we don't use the harness in the house and she sometimes tries to follow us out the door. I tried 4 different collars (even cat collars) and all of them were too big and she would put them in her mouth, get them stuck, etc. Yesterday I went to Petco and the sales assistant helped me find one that fit snugly. This morning she got it stuck between her back teeth and jawbone. The problem is it was so snug she couldn't get it back off. The look of panic in her eyes was terrifying as I am sure was the look in mine. Thankful that it was a collar with one of those black clips that you squeeze together to open. I was able to stick my fingers in her mouth to get it opened. The poor baby bit the heck out of my thumb in her panic but I don't blame her one bit. I for one will never use a neck collar again. Threw them all in the garbage. #1 new rule in our house is that baby never leaves the house without her harness and id tag. No exceptions. Will just have to train ourselves. |

Oh my goodness, that is so scary!! Glad you were able to get the collar out of her mouth safely. Poor Baby! Peanut only wears a collar on him when we are out of the house. He has a Buddy Belt that he will wear as well. When he was a puppy I tried the collar thing and the exact same thing happened to him that happened to your baby- I know the look of panic you’re talking about and it’s scary!! I trained him to accept the collar ( which I think is important)- and after that I always have taken it off when we’re home. Our babies that are tiny- it’s hard to find a collar that fits them. Peanut is 7 years and 4 pounds and it’s still hard to find collars that fit him well. His little neck is like a tiny chicken neck. I totally understand where you are coming from and you have to do what is best for YOUR baby- it doesn't matter what other people do with theirs. Personally I think having a collar on them at home is uncomfortable. Who wants to wear a collar 24/7 especially when they’re sleeping. How uncomfortable. If you’re a responsible pet owner you shouldn't have to worry about your pet getting outside- It’s all about being educated, knowing your dogs personally and behaviors. I would recommend getting pets Micro-chipped. |
I am starting a support group, that's it, I AM SERIOUSLY CONCERNED for some of my friends here, nakie dogs, puppy doors on interior doors, collar addictions, braless and collarless transference issues to name a few....lololololol |
