Should I put collar on him??
 
Hi my Roman who is 7 months and old and under 6 pounds is walked using a harness with his ID tags on, he is also chipped but he does not have a collar. Do your yorkies wear collars around the house or just wear collars all the time. There are some lovely quick release collars which are safe so I was wondering what do you do. I was also wondering what is the purpose of wearing the collar (sounds a dumb question:eek:) at home/daily 24/7. Should I have a collar on him? I'm a first time Yorkie mum so would be interested to hear your view

I don't think you need to have a collar if you already have his ID tags on him. Does he wear his harness around the house too?

I don't like collars, but it is necessary to keep his tags on at all times. If he should accidently get out you can be notified immediately. I think most people want to do the right thing and return them for a short window, but then "fall in love" and decide you were careless so they should keep the dog. Also microchip, but tags very important.

All my dogs have always had a collar with their ID tags, name & my phone #. I leave them on 24/7. They would NEVER tear off on me, but hey, ya never know, better safe then sorry. They were walked using a harness. My lil boy has a collar 24/7 with ID tag, his name & my phone #, he is also micro chipped and that tag is also on his collar. When he is walked I use a harness. As long as you can fit your 2 fingers between pups neck and the collar it is ok. The collar cannot be snug. Every one has their own opinions about using a collar. I choose to use one for tags and they are cool looking.

Mine don't. But if I did it would be a breakaway cat collar.

I only use breakaway collars when Galen is running around the house

Yep, that is what I meant when I asked about the harness (since you attach the ID tags on the harness). If you don't use the harness when your pup's in the house, than I think that a collar will be necessary, just to provide a place to put the tags on.

I would use only a break away cat collar for tags. There are many accidents that happen yearly....especially Yorkies hanging themselves from collars when their tags get caught in something (like the slat type openings on pet carriers), or they struggle and get the collar caught in their mouths like a bit on a horses bridle, etc.....if you must have a collar on the pup, please use a break away collar.

Dinky usually has his harness on, but we always take it off when we leave him alone in his crate. I have that fear too that he could get himself tangled up somehow.

Collars are EXTREMLY important for id tags never for a leash. Most people are not going to check for a chip and it will take them longer to finally take the dog to be scanned so you are much more more likely to get your dog back and faster if something happens if they have a collar with tags. Mine wears her 24/7.

If they are putting the collar in there mouth it's to lose and that's normally dogs who are not used to them that do that. I just have Callie's loose enough that if she ever did get caught she could slip it off. There are many more dogs that get lost without a collar then accidents where a dog has killed themselves because of a collar.

Lots of people do not know this, and will let their collars be loose so if pup gets caught in something, they can "slip out of the collar" before they hang themselves. I have talked with a couple of people that allowed 1 finger space under their collar, and their bored pups got that collar up in their mouth when the owner was at work and babies were entertaining themselves!

I always advocate owners use a break away collar for safety's sake.....I can only imagine if you happen to be that ONE person that comes home to find their adorable, precious baby, hanging dead by that collar caught in the baby gate or the play pen, or the threads on the carpet, you will wish you were in the group that had lost their baby outside without the collar.

One Callie is to big for breakaway collars, two she is never left alone and three she never puts her collar in her mouth ever. I have never heard of an adult dog doing it. Accidents with collars are rare.

I let my babies go without the harness. But never thought about them getting out. What does it cost to micro chip?

All of my dogs have worn collars since they were puppies. I have never had an issue with a collar. You must make sure it is properly fitted. I use leather collars with a buckle. They are pretty thin (3/8") and they have tags on the collar. The only time the collars come off is for grooming.
