Diarrhea and Tried To Vomit
 

My little Wolfie had diarrhea three times today from early this morning to 12 noon. Very watery. He also just tried to vomit, dry heaved mostly. A tiny bit came out, mostly spit.

He is 10 months old and 7 lbs. I tried to give him some rice and chicken and he won't eat it or anything for that matter. Or drink his water. He won't even lick an ice cube. Just wanted to stay under the couch.

Should I bring him to the vet or wait a bit to see if it resolves. I don't think he ate anything bad, mostly just his food, though I gave him some grilled chicken that was on top of my salad last night.

HELP! I am worried!

I would call the vet. These little ones can dehydrate or get hypoglycemic pretty quickly. Hope he feels better!

I'd take him in. If he's not drinking and having diarrhea/vomiting he could get dehydrated quickly. Do you have any Nutrical? My pup will always take that no matter what.

Don't worry about giving him food. His tummy needs to "rest". Liquid is important to keep him hydrated. If he's not drinking then he needs to see a vet. My Rosie has major tummy issues. Sometimes a teaspoon of pure pumpkin in the can will help her with diarrhea. How is he acting? Is he lethargic? Has he had any more bowel movements?

I called the vet and she said to watch him and that if he throws up more than twice in 10 mins to take him in. He just vomited the most horrible smelly vomit. I am hoping that maybe he feels better after that. He is def sick from something but not sure what. He won't even lick an ice cube so she said if he doesn't drink by tonight to bring him in.

I am so worried!

Is this your regular vet? Not drinking by tonight is a long time in my opinion. Try offering water with a little sugar in it or maybe Gatorade. This baby will need fluids. Did she suggest anything?? :confused:

I would go to ER vet, I think he will be much worse by morning if you don't! Good luck, he needs care and rehydration from the sounds of it. Keep us posted...please take him.

This is my regular vet yes. So I got water into him with a baby syringe. Just a little bit but then he thew up the water. I put a few more drops into him and so far so good. I picked up some chicken baby food to put with rice but he won't eat it. He's asleep right now. If he wakes up and either has diarrhea or vomits I am taking him. What do you think it could be. I don't want them to keep him there!!!

If he could not hold the water down he needs to go now. The chicken you are supposed to mix with white rice should be boiled chicken breast.

I know how you feel about leaving him, trust me though it is better than losing him! He needs to be seen by a vet that doesn't put it off, he needs medical help. You do not want to regret not going...by morning he will be much worse. Who knows what it could be but it's not worth his life by speculating. These little dogs die from a day or two of any sickness. I'm sorry you and he are dealing with this...please go do not wait til it's too late.

Vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms of a larger problem. Do you have any idea, what made him sick? Little dogs go down hill rapidly and you need to take him to the vet to see what's wrong. Stop pushing the food, they can live a few days without water, but some die within a day of becoming dehydrated. Also, if you do it wrong you could get it in his lungs, instead of his tummy. The vet can just give it intravenously, so no vomiting is involved.

I would take him to an emergency now and not wait. I would be safe and let them see him. Pumpkin does work if you need to try that.

Pumpkin is great for diarrhea, but when there is vomiting, all food should be avoided. Vomiting at this point could prove dangerous. Like others have said, stomach needs to rest a bit.

Hi Everyone

I took Wolfie to the vet. He seemed to be doing much better. Perked up, played with his toys, and then he went into the bathroom to his pee pads and when I went in after him there was a liquid puddle of reddish brown. I rushed him in right away, taking a sample of the liquid with me.

At the vet she was not very concerned about the red. She said his intestinal tract was irritated, but he did mention parvo. He has had all his shots but I guess there is always a chance. I am neurotic about him not eating anything when we are out so I am hoping that's not it. She said he seemed very alert and energetic and she didn't think so either.

So she gave him an anti-nausea shot for the vomiting and some medicine I have to give him twice a day. They took a stool sample to test for parasites and bacterial infection. If he doesn't get any better and gets worse in the next 6 hours, she said there is a bigger chance he has parvo, or if not that, something stuck in his intestinal tract like a piece of a toy.

He never really eats his toys, he chews them and if he rips them, spits it out, but there's always that chance. But he was very energetic, wanted to talk home, which isn't too far so I let him. He did another bloody liquid poo on the way home.

So now we wait and see. She said she would have pushed the parvo test if he was limp and lethargic but that bc he was alert and energetic she said it was up to me.

I hope he is okay. He seems fine acting but that bloody liquid has me worried.

She said no food or water until tomorrow morning. She gave him some hydration under his skin to keep him hydrated.

So that's it for now ...

He hasn't vomited since 3 this afternoon and it's 10 pm now, but has had diarrhea a couple of times. I am so scared about Parvo. I should have just had him tested now I regret not doing it for peace of mind. I keep reading about Parvo and while the vet was unconcerned about the bloody stool, the internet says that's a sure sign plus the pungent iron smell to it. uggg. He is sleeping now and was very energetic on his walk so I don't know!

I'm praying for your little one. I have always heard that they are lethargic when they have parvo so hopefully it isn't. Since your vet didn't seem concerned about parvo this gives me hope that it isn't parvo. I hope he is well by morning and back home with you.

Parvo does have a very distinct smell...once you have smelled it you never forget. It's very strong....does he have the iron smell? If there's even a suspicion of parvo I would not take him for walks and let him poo....

His poo has an iron smell yes and it's red liquid. I told the vet and she still was on the fence about him having parvo bc he wasn't vomiting that much and he was alert and energetic. Is the iron smell a sign?

I think the poop will smell like iron as long as it has blood in it since iron is a big component of blood. He could have some sort of intestinal blockage. My pup likes to eat everything that's inedible despite being fed a good diet. Diarrhea can be very frustrating, I know first hand. We've never had blood in it. Have you recently switched food or something?

It's very hard to describe....it's a very putrid smell that hits you like a ton of bricks...my boss used to say it was the worst thing he had ever smelled in his 30 years of being a vet. I really hope your baby gets well soon and it's not parvo!

I hope not too. He has been pretty much himself tonight and has shown interest in food for the first time today. The vet said not to feed him, but the interest is there. He is sniffing around his dish area and when we were eating wanted some, which this afternoon he did not.

As for the smell, I can only describe it as very irony and his vomit was strong smelling as well.

Uggg this is so frustrating. He is sleeping again right now.

Oh sorry, I thought you had left him at the vet over night. It sounds like he is feeling better. So good to hear.

Thanks for the update. hope your little one is better. It might make you feel better to ahead and get the test done. Peace of mind is priceless.

I'm so glad you went to the vet, you may have saved his life. Dehydration is so serious, and it can happen so suddenly. Make sure there are no insecticide or mouse traps he could have gotten into. One time we put some moth balls in some rafters over a patio to discourage spiders. My two dogs like to lie on the terrace above occasionally. One day, one started vomiting a tiny amount and then the other did and I knew it was either their food or both of them were getting into something. Anyway, we took away the moth balls and no more vomiting.

Hi everyone and thanks so much for all your support last night. So he seemed interested in food last night which made me feel better but I didn't feed him or give him water per the vet. When I took him to bed with me he fell into such a deep sleep he didn't stir as he usually does when my boyfriend gets into the bed. When we felt his body we could hardly detect if he was breathing which scared the crap out of me. I woke him up and he was very floppy and for a moment my heart raced and then he popped up and jumped onto the floor and chased me around jumping up and down. I felt relieved but didn't sleep a wink as I kept checking his breathing. I did give him some water at 5am and he took it. This morning at 9am I gave him his second does of diarrhea medicine and then a little water and some boiled chicken with rice. I tried to give him just a little. He gobbled it up. He is very alert and his energy seems like normal. Now we just wait and see if he keeps it down and I'll give him more. He did poop two more times at home the runny liquid but it was more brown than red this time. The vet said it could take two days for that to clear up and become solid. Eeek.

Question: Should I take him out at all or just keep him in? Also, would any of you recommend washing his toys and throwing out his chewy bones?

So glad he's doing better, I'm not sure about the question taking him out, do you mean to go to the bathroom or to go on a walk? I don't think it's a bad idea, but I wouldn't overtire him, and I'd keep him away from other dogs. It probably wouldn't hurt to wash is toys and bones, if it's parvo though, I think, he'd be much sicker and you'd have to do more than just wash, you have to sanitize everything. Could anyone have given him a treat that you don't know about, so many people try to give mine human foods, like donuts and cookies. These things can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

So glad you took him last night! With the rehydration and other meds he was given I'm sure it helped him tremendously!! Hoping he continues to get better. I can't speak to anything parvo so will let others comment about that. You sound like an excellent yorkie mom :-)

I'm with Nancy1999, people always want to give treats...I'm really strict about food/treats...not worth the consequences!

Thank you so much. I am watching him closely and hoping he holds his food down. He is sleeping right now. I don't have to take him out to pee or poo bc he is trained on the potty pads but I just didn't know if I should get him a walk at some point. Maybe not today.

I have no idea what could have caused his however there are a ton of dogs in our neighborhood when I walk him and they all stop and the dogs say hello which includes sniffing each other. I usually pull him back but he gets in there for a few secs nonetheless. There was a sick dog on our street but not sure what exactly she had. Other than that I always watch if he tries to eat anything on the street, I steer him away from other dog's poop but ya never know what's in the grass. They also treat the grass around here and he was licking it the other day before I pulled him away. He likes to eat leaves that fall on my patio if I don't catch him. I did see him eat something brown on the ground when I was walking him and I pulled him and searched his mouth. I don't think he would eat poop bc I usually just see him sniff it and back away, but who knows there. I did also see him lick a leaf that looked wet from another dog peeing. I am tempted to never take him out again!! If they can get parvo even after all their shots then I feel like it's russian roulette out there. And I am the most neurotic about all that stuff. I never let him drink out the public dog bowls that some restaurants put out or at a park, I don't even take him to dog parks, I am constantly monitoring him and making sure he doesn't lick or eat anything on the ground, when we are sitting outside with friends I am constantly making sure of what is on the ground and no one gives him anything to eat. Soooooo yeah ... I have no idea what happened here!
