Izzy gets spayed tomorrow 1 Attachment(s) Okay so I take Izzy in tomorrow to get spayed and I've had a hysterectomy myself so I know how she's going to feel and I feel bad for her. Scott will be taking sumo Yorkie to work with him during the days so Izzy can rest in peace. They finally started to play with each other and it's like watching WWF Yorkie wrestling all day long. It's cute.:confused:And I'm just wondering if you guys think it would be okay after a few days to give her Benadryl just to keep her from being restless and keep her sleeping because you heal faster when you sleep. And also she follows me up and down the stairs constantly and I know she's probably going to think she still needs to do that, should I get a sling and put her in it so that she's with me without putting strain on her or is that going too far in the whole spoiled aspect of things? Oh and the vet checked her and said she actually lost all of her baby teeth ! Her breath went from atrocious to almost pleasant overnight. That was awesome. So that's one less thing she has to endure while she's under. :p |
Sorry I don't have any advice for you. I just love the picture of her, she is so stinking cute! Maybe you can get some pain meds to take home to keep her calm. Good luck Izzy and a speedy recovery! |
There's no such thing as spoiled when it comes to our babies! ;) I have a homemade sling to carry Teddy around when I'm cleaning around the house it helps me prevent tripping over him or having him cry. Maybe asking your vet for some med recommendations for her will help! I hope she has a fast recovery! |
Benadryl doesn't always knock them out and I'm not sure that's going to be necessary but if your really worried you could talk to your vet about it. You could just carrier her up the stairs but I think a sling might not be to comfortable for her. |
Izzy is just adorable,I love her earsssss, their just beautiful. Happy to hear they are playing, I love watching puppies play. Your vet should give you something for pain, if they don't ask about it. You'll be amazed at how fast they recover. |
I have never given anything but pain meds after a spay. I usually give them for about three days. These pups do get up and run around, but I still think they are hurting even though they often don't show it. It is their nature to hide pain. I see no reason not to use a sling. I don't believe you can spoil them! :) Spoiling is neglecting them...the word spoil to me is a negative one. Loving a pup is making him/her happy...not ruining/spoiling! :) |
Guess that's a good way of looking at it. Thanks. I just know that too much activity after a hysterectomy can cause all kinds of s**t, and I started being too active just because I thought I felt good enough after, and found out what harm it did to me when the doctor told me to cut it out. So I figure dogs would be under the same principle. I could be wrong. Just over thinking probably. I do that. |
Oh Izzy, you are too darn cute. Jaz and I wish you a speedy recovery |
You can ask your vet for pain meds...metacam is usually what's given for little bits like ours. A few days should be sufficient...they really do recover fast...of course it depends on how dramatic they are ;-) I hope things go well for her. It's usually harder on us than them!! |

Sending good thoughts on her surgery today |
My poor girl The vet didn't give her any pain meds at all. I'm bent about it. I only had my uterus removed and let me tell you, there was definitely pain afterwards. She's had her whole kit removed and she gets nothing? This is bulls**t. I'm going to my regular vet tomorrow and seeing what they say. I'm now trying to figure out how we are going to sleep since we can't leave either of them by themselves cause Sumo-Toby will not stand for separation without a loud fight. I am going to the store to get a heating pad, a cooling pad, some rice and meat for Izzy. Poor thing lost her bowels and I had to steam clean everything. She hasn't thrown up or anything. She's just shaking really bad. I'm all stressed out over her pain levels ... |
Oh and while I was gone taking izzy Sumo-Toby managed to find a strip of leather and not only demolished it but ate a good portion. I only know this because he threw up about 7 times and I analyzed the contents and found little 1 to 2 inch pieces of it in all the mess each time. So yeah... I'm a ball of concentrated stress right now. |
Wow I'm surprised they didn't give her anything....we didn't even have to ask when my mother in law had her 10# male chihuahua neutered....and that's much less invasive. I hope the poor girl feels better soon :-( |
Good Luck for your spay Izzy! My Pemny got spayed 9 days ago now and she's bouncing around like a lunatic, no cone or baby grow and the scar looks lovely. She has some painkillers and anti inflamitories the vet gave us and that's it. She ended up being able to reach the wound through the babygrow leg so she had to have the cone in the end, but only for 6days. Then we took it off. She stayed pretty calm with the cone and that meant it healed quite quickly. Good luck though, I hated my baby being done. But nothing to worry about after all :):love::love::love: |

Dinky had Metacam from vet. I remember it was only about 2 drops because he weighed about 2 pounds then. We only did pain meds for a couple of days. We also mashed his food up and fed it to him by hand the day after. I think he was so hungry that it helped him sleep. Our vet gave us a packaged collar which we did not need, so we were able to return it unopened and not pay for it. And I remember being so very happy when the surgery was over! |

How is Izzy doing tonight? and that lil sumo Toby mischief maker, how is he doing after chewing the belt. |
Toby the Tyrant seems to be just fine now. Good as ever , no more throwing up. He's back to creating mischief wherever possible. I have a baby playpen set up in the living room and I switch them in and out of it. Cause Toby throws a fit if I'm upstairs and Izzy throws one if I'm downstairs. So I'm compromising. Izzy isn't real happy about it. She seems to be doing better. She still shakes sometimes but she's trying to be more active now. She's eating a little and drinking and peeing ok. I got her a heating pad and a cold compress to lay on if she so chooses. |
Poor lil Izzy, poor you, you need to cut yourself in 1/2 lol to satisfy them both. Happy to hear Mr. Mischief maker stopped the vomiting. Good luck |
Incorrigible I about had a heart attack when we got back from the gym cause izzy had pulled down the big blanket and crawled up it out of the pen and was frolicking around with Toby like it was the thing to do. They had shredded the puppy pad I had taped down inside the pen and she had half of it stuck to her foot.we had to cut it off her foot. Her suture looks fine still, but I wanted to scream. |
lol, my last girl was a determined one, if you blocked her out of a room, she found a way to get in it, even if she had to chew her way out of her confinement lol, not funny then but is now. I think that's a yorkie trait, now you know how determined they can be, when they want something they will find a way to get it or get at it. You are learning from them lol. |
I'm so sorry for you and Lizzie! You might try keeping her in a crate until her stitches heal so she doesn't bust them open. I would be finding a new vet!!! That's just not right for her/him to not give Lizzie something for pain. |
Yeah I called my regular vet who will be back in tomorrow and I have an appointment to have her seen. The reception guy said she should most certainly have been given something, and that no doubt my regular vet would give her something. Poor girl. So for now I just let Toby demolish the downstairs as he sees fit and I stay upstairs in bed my Izzy so she will rest. That's how she rolls. If I sleep for two days, so shall she. Lol. I have her on a heat pad and I put some arnica on her incision. It seems to be healing well all things considered. I gave Izzy a bath the morning of her surgery , she looks like ragamuffin and her skin seems to itch her a lot. She keeps pawing at her face and nibbling at her legs . And scratching her ears a lot. I can't bathe her so I don't know what to do for her. The dry shampoo doesn't really help much. |
I'm shocked about the no pain meds. She sounds like a plucky little thing though. Anyway, I hope she has a good night and sleeps well. |
Yay! I love my vet. He's older than dirt and just awesome. Got his veterinary license back in 1942. and he was nice enough to hook Izzy up with some pain pills. He said they were good ones and he wasn't lyin. She started teetering while she walking and nodded out halfway up the body pillow ramp I concocted for her to get up on the bed without jumping. Needless to say she's not shaking or pacing anymore. She's even wagged her stub at me . Yay! |

Do not be intimidated....do not do just as the vet suggested...speak up for your pup! Additionally, it is probably good to get this cleared up prior. Ask if pain meds will be given...if not, walk away and find another vet to do the procedure! This post is for anyone who would just go along with what a vet told them. We don't have to accept this kind of stuff! |
I took her to the place I did because they have the most experience with small dogs. This is New Mexico and themajority of people own chihuahuas . I just wanted to be sure she'd be ok with the amount of anesthesia and what not. But my regular vet tech understood that completely and just said for me to let them know in advance next time and go to their office directly after and they would prescribe something for Toby too, since they know that the other place won't. While I have complete faith in my vet, he is really really old and I just worry that he would shake or something during surgery. I'm probably being paranoid. But when I was there to get Izzy done, there were only two big dogs and the rest were izzy' s size and smaller. So it made me feel more secure about it getting done there. |
