Please excuse my ignorance but what does expressing an anal gland do? I haven't heart of that procedure

Anal glands are 2 small openings located inside the dog's anus. They're scent glands and dogs express a small amount when they have a bowel movement. Think of it like a doggie calling card, lets other dogs know who's been there.;)Sometimes for whatever reason, the usually thin substance becomes thick (I've seen some come out with the thickness of toothpaste when it should be more watery)and the dog isn't able to express them themselves. If that happens, they can rupture. Vets will usually express them internally but they can also be expressed externally. Some groomers will do it for you too if you ask. And it's a smell you'll never forget, it has a horrible dead fish smell. That's probably WAY more than you ever wanted to know about anal glands.:D

Ours is ~28/tooth. We are in the Atlanta. This cost may vary by location and the actual vet. I've seen cheaper.

I'm seriously thinking about traveling the dental packages her start with a cleaning at 299 and go up from there not included her spay

If she is a pup she should not need a cleaning. How old is she?

This does not sound correct since the largest part of the procedure is anesthesia. If you are asking your vet the cost of a dental and spay separately that might be your issue. Additionally, there are plenty of clinics that will do both dentals and spays at a much reduced rate. My vet is part of a local spay/neuter program that sells certificates through the local shelter. You purchase your certificate and make the appointment for the spay/neuter at the time of the purchase. I believe that I paid $95 for a spay and $65  for my boys. They all had baby teeth removed which was a minimal charge. It's been around 6 years but the cost has not gone up much since then. In fact, last year Doodlebug has a lesion removed from his hind leg and also had a dental at that time. The vet suggested that since he was going under for the lesion that we do the dental to save on anesthesia costs. It was around $45-500 total including pathology. If your little one is still a puppy an actual dental is not needed and just the baby teeth should be removed. Have you checked into programs in your area that offer spay/neuter discounts?

Second Chance Sheltering SNAP Program for Dogs

Second Chance Sheltering Network and Dr. Biligovskiy also offer low cost spay/neuter for dogs as well, but prices will vary depending on size and gender of the dog. You must call 716-652-1120 and state clearly that you are interested in the "Second Chance spay/neuter program for dogs". A volunteer will return you call to give more information and schedule dates.

Exactly....lol..the smell is horrendous. If you see your dog scooting on the carpet it may mean your dog needs his/her anal glands expressed.

Honey is 11 months... when I called they said everyone needs a cleaning just as a human would and the starting prices is 299. And the ones i called want to spay and extract teeth at different times. from what I read that's a bit much or maybe I'm being too frugal lol either way I don't want her to have issues from crowding so we'll see how many she needs

Low Cost Spay/Neuter Programs

No I want to have the both procedures done at the same time and I was sure to express that. Also we are having her spayed at a low cost clinic called operation pets it's 85 including parvo and rabies (getting titers first) and a microchip for 15 extra. But they don't pull teeth so I was looking elsewhere. I've called 3 places so far and they all say it depends on what tooth but we're talking 299 was the cheapest

Most vets spay and pull the baby teeth at the same time. I have never heard of a puppy needing there teeth clean that young. Mine got spayed and had her baby teeth pulled at 9 months. Many people on this board have gotten there dog fixed and baby teeth pulled at the same time. In my opinion unless the vet looks at her teeth and says they need a cleaning she doesn't. Dogs do need there teeth cleaned but normally puppies don't. I would try a different vet.

Did you tell them baby teeth? Puppies always need there yearly boosters in my opinion then after that you do the titers but don't do shots the same day as a surgery. Also make sure they do pre surgery blood work.

Thanks hun I told them they were baby teeth and how old she is. Bloodwork will be done next week. The lady says the shots will be fine at a follow up appointment

Just wanted to add Lola got a mini cleaning because she had a double layer of fang teeth and there was brown junk between them. My vet cleaned the brown off.
