For those who got a second yorkie.. for those who got a second yorkie or other breed dog/puppy to keep your first yorkie company and relieve boredom, did it work? |
I don't think mine are ever bored or lonely! They still need 6 times more attention than one. Well maybe not quite that much :) It does double your food and vet bills, though. |
I got my second yorkie "Bella" in November when my 1st yorkie "Louie" was 1yr. old. I had second thoughts the first week, but now I know it was the best thing I ever did. They are so adorable together and are the best of friends. They keep each other company when everyone is busy or if they have to stay at home for an hr. or two. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. :yorkiesar |
I dont think any yorkie gets bored lol. They are capable of entertaining them selfs just fine;) Mine have never really gone out of their way to play with each other, even as pups, although sometimes they will chase each other around the room for a toy.Lady sleeps most of the day and Jess prefers our cat when shes in a playful mood. |

Ditto, we brought Gizmo home in Sept 2005 and in Dec.2005 we brought Maddy home I too had second thoughts but they love each other...it's so cute to see them together Maddy follows Gizmo around like a little sister she is even though she is bigger than him and he's 6 months!!! They do get in their little squabbles sometimes but that's just nature! Good luck in whatever you decide!! :) |
I agree...Chanel got a ton of attention when she was my only child and since getting Cheri ...now I give Double the Attention but love every second of it and YES - it did give Chanel a nice buddy to play with....she didn't change at all and is still a mommies girl ....but now she has someone to do "Stuff" with and they have a blast together. |
I sometimes wonder how anyone has the energy to keep up with one yorkie. I am glad mine have each other. Especially times like right now - seems they are all in hyper mode - except Quattro has had enough and is lying in my lap. They can wear each other down, all I have to do is love on them, wash, brush,feed,water.......... |

I got Maya about 6 weeks after Deb. They love each other and keep each other company. They sleep curled up together, play together, and yes...fight with each other. They are just like my kids :) I wouldnt have it any other way!! |
I work part-time and I feel better knowing that they have each other while I am gone. I love watching them play together especially when they chase each other around the house. |
We got Sammie (maltese) because we could not keep Gracie entertained. She was very high maintenance and needed attention ALL the time. Since we got Sammie, they play all day together, in fact, she much prefers him to us anymore. If they are separated for any reason and for any amount of time, they cry for eachother. Cute. |
did it the other way around Bailey, my precious havanese of 16 months, needed a playmate and a companion. So we introduced Dayzee into our lives 8 weeks ago. There are so many similarities between the Yorkie and Havanese. Since they are 11 months apart in age, almost the same size now, I feel like the "parent" as I compare Dayzee's progress to Bailey's...i.e., learning commands, house breaking, etc. If I had to make the decision again, I would do the same thing. They play together so well and Dayzee is just a cuddler. I'm in love with my puppys...and my husband knows too. |
Okay, now I have a question. I've never had 2 Yorkies, but I have had 3 dogs at one time. Don't you find that having more than one means ALOT more noise??? |
Chachi and Jewels keep each other company but they are both a little independent too. They never curl up and lay together. There is twice the noise though. |
IMO I think that having 2 of them is easier than having just 1 bc you dont have to keep them entertained as much bc they entertain themselves. |
My Yorkie is 7 months and my Shih tzu is 8 months and they play all the time! |
Afie is 20 months old now and Lottie is 16 weeks old , I got lttie to keep him company ,I was a bit worried at first but they have got on so well and he adores her. Even when she chases him around they have so much fun together. Best thing we ever done. |
We got Sailor about two months after we had Magic...we felt that at times she was getting bored just playing with us. Now they play together all the time, they can't stand not being near each other!! I think it was the best decision we made....we get double the yorkie fun!! |
We've actually considered getting another Yorkie too but it seems like Aria doesn't like other dogs. When she meets a new dog she gets curious and kinda gets close but then she leaves and wants nothing to do with them, she also seems as if she is scared of them. Do you guys have any suggestions on how we can get her used to another dog? If we bring one home how do we know if she will accept her? I have heard people saying at first it's questionable but how many weeks does that last? When would you know for sure? Kinda want to get an idea before we make the possible mistake of bringing one home and Aria hating her. Thanks! |
2nd Yorkie Bella came to live with us in Sept and by Dec I just had to have Lexi.... The first week was really a struggle..... Bella was NOT happy! Now they are sisters.... they fight like sisters and worry about each other like sisters.... If we are holding Lexi and Bella can't find her she frantically looks for her until we show her that we have her. Usually Lexi doesn't let Bella out of her sight...Lexi does sleep more than Bella so Bella still has her Mommy time that she is used to. They entertain each other during the day and sleep all cuddled together at night now. I worried at first that I was making the wrong decision and if you would have asked me that first week... I couldn't have answered because I didn't get any sleep and all I did was monitor their relationship.... but now.... I LOVE HAVING MY TWO GIRLS! About the only thing that I see that has doubled is the amount of puppy pad we go through.... but compared to the joy two yorkies bring... it is way worth it! Tammy PS - My two daughters love having two babies also... they each have one to spoil! |
for those who have a second yorkie hello I am a new poster to this community, I have 2 yorkies, Peeka (2) Emerald (1) and a Maltese Dutchess (2) they do keep each other company but boy oh boy the noise level goes way up  especially when there are kids or cats on the street...........but they love each other, and they are way spoiled :D Janedks3406 |
My two Yorkies are almost 3 years apart. I got the second to keep my 1st company while I worked. Merlin, the oldest, wanted nothing to do with Mickey - and still doesn't from time to time. But they do sleep near each other and I believe they need each other. Their personalities are different. Merlin use to never bark.. till we got Mickey. He's the yappy type that taught Melrin to bark at everything. I'll second the comments that the noise levels increase, the vet bills increase, the need attention increases... but so do the kisses, puppy eyes, and that unconditional dog love! |
thanks for the feedback everyone! i'm really itching to get bunjee a buddy but the noise factor is concern considering i live in a condo. and of course the financial considerations are always up there too. but first and foremost is how bunjee, being spoiled as an only child, will handle another dog in the house and will they actually keep each other company or will i end up with 2 furbabies at home with separation anxiety... i'm not in a hurry tho, i find that i've still so much to learn from raising my first puppy, i didn't want to jump the gun too quickly. i'm actually thinking of keeping an eye out for a small breed, non shedding puppy or an adult dog (i'm thinking another yorkie or havanese or a mix like morkie) to adopt. maybe from a shelter, maybe from a breeder who's retiring a sire or dam in their breeding line. for those who brought a second yorkie home, did you ever bring your first yorkie to the breeder's to see how they will interact with the second? or is the expectation that they'll hit it off to start or just learn to accept each other as time passes? |

When our two get too rough, I say "FINISH" and they know to stop. They come to me and I give them a treat and they calm right down. |
I wouldn't worry about double the cost. I don't know about you, but we spend about $20 on food every 3 months. (Granted, it would be $20 every month and a half or so if we had two.) I know my mom spends maybe double that in a month with a lab and a beagle. There will be the vet costs, but if there aren't any emergencies or health-related problems, it's only an extra $100-$200 a year (depending on where you live) with shots, exams, and flea and heartworm medicine. You'll have to purchase a new collar and leash, food bowl, and maybe a new bed, but they'll share toys, so you won't have to go spend the initial chunk of change you spent when you were starting from scratch. You'll just have to stay on top of the barking from the beginning so that no bad habits form. We use a can with change to curb Olivia's barking. She usually gets scared and runs to my lap when I shake it. I say "go for it!" |
When we were looking at getting Maddy Waddy, we took Gizmo to Denise's house several times before we actually brought her home... but he wasn't very keen, keep in mind Denise(breeder) had the mom ,dad and 4 pups! So that was alot for Gizmo to take. It took about a week or two but eventually they he was okay with her. We picked up Maddy Dec.23 2005 and we are now Jan 10,2006 so it didn't take that long and now Gizmo defends his little sister from bullys or bigger dogs! Good luck with your decision! :) |
the more the merrier Haha- yorkies are like pringles...you cant have just one. I Since i got Sirius about a month ago, and im already DYING to get a new puppy! im even having dreams about it. HunnieBunnie- this was such a great thread, sooo much input and def made me realize im DEF getting another one. Probably when hes around 1 :] :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
Even with six, our biggest noise problem is when dogs are on TV. Every bark sends the entire group outside through the doggie door, ker-thump, ker-thump, ker-thump, ker-thump, ker-thump, ker-thump - and then back again - barking all the while. I usually say 'enough', and they will all settle down until the next bark. I will have to close the back door so they cannot get out, that will settle them down a little. Other than that, they bark to get birds out of our yard, and occasionally when the cat is blocking the stairway. I just don't let them bark randomly. I find it a joy to have a pack of yorkies, they play so cute-ly together. They keep me laughing all day. And when I want to hold a baby, I always have a 'taker'. |
y0rkieL0ver they are totally like pringles! i'm glad you're finding this thread as helpful as i am! centralnewyorki i know it won't be twice as much with 2 yorkies vs. 1 yorkie but i have thought about where the increase in cost is going to be with a second doggie...and compiled a list... (i'm a list person :D ) individual items (approx $1300/year on an adult dog) - routine maintence insurance - accidental and health medical insurance - other vet/medication fees - professional grooming - boarding and daycare (8 days/year) - travel costs such as air travel (1x/year) - food and treats - flea and tick meds - puppy pads - baby wipes and other doggie cleaning products - home cleaning products - carrier and crate - obedience classes shared items - clothes - toys - bedding - home grooming products existing duplicated items (items i have more than one set of anyways) - harness/collar/leash - food/water dishes - pet bed of course the first year cost with a puppy would be a little more but ongoing with two adult dogs, i'm looking at an additional $1k a year at minimum for the life of the pets. decisions, decisions! but financial costs aside, the important thing is that bunjee get along with his future new best friend! i'd love to have two happy, healthy little furbabies around! double the pleasure! double the fun! double the laughter! i'm totally keeping an eye on shelter listings... anyone in northern california find something good, lemme know!!! |
I only have one right now. I am lookng for my red female and I hope that when I do, it will help both me and Gus with our seperation issues. He's a mommy's boy big time and is so sad when I have to leave him and I do nothing but worry about him if I have to leave him behind. |
