Toto's strange behavior at night before bed I've had Toto for over a year. Just the past week or so he started this thing. When it's time to go to bed (around midnight or 1am) I go to pick him up and he growls, snarls, and bites me. His bites are fake, doesn't break skin and hardly even touches me. But obviously he's annoyed. What gives? After I pick him up and bring him upstairs, he's fine and goes to bed quietly. I wonder why he's so upset? Too comfy in his pineapple bed to be bothered? |
Is he fully awake when you approach him? |
Maybe he is too comfy in his pineapple bed to be bothered. Teddy gives me a grumpy look when I disturb him from a comfortable spot at night. |
Yes he's fully awake. |

Bella does this if I have to pick her up from the other dogs' bed to go to bed. But, if I don't , she wakes me during the night to get into my bed. |
:D How about if you pick him up, bed and all, and take 'the whole thing' upstairs?!!? Otherwise, I think I'd leave him be, to sleep where he wants, until he makes his own arrangements and comes up to join you.... |
Hi I had a maltese that use to do that. When my husband came to bed he would move her over and she would growl and snap but not bite him. Not every night but pretty much every night. I think they don't like being disturbed. |

Tink did similar stuff when I first got her as a 2YO, but I think it was a dominance thing with her. She was the boss in her previous homes and was trying to continue the pattern with me. Finally she has learned that I will persist and that she doesn't scare me (well, not too much, lol). I think her learning to trust me over time has helped also. |
when they get comfy sometimes, they dont want to be bothered |
My Amy does that to my husband every night when he picks her up to take you out for the last time. She never bites him but is very cranky and growls and turns and barks at him. I think it is because she is sound asleep and he too abruptly wakes her up. She loves him all day until the last trip outside. |
I guess I just gotta make sure he's awake before I take him upstairs. But he just started doing this, so that's what I don't get. |
All mine have come to me as adults, so they each have their own 'baggage'. It amazes me ... they are all continually changing... like Sapphire just started to really play with me (she's been here going on 4-5 years!). That's a big thing... there have been smaller things along the way. Tink was a horrible biter... now I can put my fingers and hand in her mouth during play or to have a look at her mouth and she totally allows it with no problems. I think they go through stages, and I think it can take them a while to really trust people, and they will test you along the way. They'll also learn new things, some good and some not so good, lol... never static... at least not here. |

How is his eyesight? I ask bc sometimes in complete darkness, Luma is more alarmed if she sees my fiancé walking around but she can't tell who it is. She thinks she's our alert dog...but she's a harmless wimp  |
