Big baby with floppy ears

Hi, I am new here but I thought this would be a great place to get some advise. I just took my fur baby Ellie to the vet to get her shots and a check up. She is 9 1/2 weeks and weighed in at a whopping 3 pounds. My vet asked me if she is a purebred because she doesn't usually see Yorkies weigh this much at this age. She also told me that my little girls ears may never come up because they are very floppy and that there is nothing I can do to help them stand. I got the impression that she wasn't very knowledgeable about the breed. I left feeling a little deflated. Anyone have a Yorkie that weighed that much?

Hi and WELCOME to YT :)! Glad you found us. We have many member who have larger yorkies. I have 3 yorkies, and my oldest, Wylie, is about 8.5lbs...so he's out of standard, but no matter to me.

As far as ears, you could tape them to stand up - there is still time. Do you want them to stand?

Weight doesn't bother me so much and I do prefer the ears to stand but she is very cute with them floppy. I just thought it was a red flag when my own vet questions if she is a purebred. I am trying to post pictures of her so you can see her. I have had Yorkies before and never questioned if she was a purebred or not.

Welcome to YT, I have had 4 yorkies all now past, all gotten at 8 weeks of age, I cannot remember their weight at 8 weeks. I am responding to the floppy ears. 2 had floppy ears, 2 had stand up ears. Many yorkie ears do not stand up, that does not mean they are not pure breed, all 4 of my pups as adults weighed from 10 lbs. to 17 lbs. all were AKC registered. As for your vet. My last girl weighed 17 lbs, my vet asked if she was a silky because she was so big. Because your vet questioned purebred because of weight at 9 1/2 doesn't make her a bad vet. YT member advise it is best to have a vet that is more familiar with smaller breeds, and I agree, however, depending on where a person lives, they can be hard to find. Your vet like my vet, handles many breeds, I wouldn't worry about her commenting on your pups weight at the age she is. Yorkies are an awesome breed regardless of floppy or straight ears or their weight. She is a lil sweetie, a face sure to melt many hearts. Good luck and enjoy that lil baby.

According to the puppy weight chart, she will be about 8 lbs as an adult. They don't always follow the chart but there are a lot of 8 plus Lb. yorkies out there. As for her ears, they will be cute either way, up or down. If you want to try to get them to stand up you should clip the hair short on both the inside and outside of her ears and place a piece of tape long wise on her ears. This does help but may or may not work for your puppy.

Awww so cute! But yeah the main benefit of the standing ears is less ear problems like infections, etc. otherwise they are quirky cute in their own way :3 I've had a girl in the past (and male too) that weighed around 10-12 lb range. the girl had floppy ears but had lots of ear infections and problems as opposed to the male who's ears stood up.

She looks like a Yorkie puppy to me.

I did not have Sophie at 9 1/2 weeks so I cannot confirm what her weight was.

I can confirm that hte avatar on this post is of her, she is now 6 years old and weights about 8 lbs and she has a hot mess of floppy ears and up ears. You can get her ears trimmed so that the hair is not holding them down or tape her ears (I a sure someone here can help you with both).

I just wanted to show you what she might look like with down ears and a little bigger.

My boy Waffles weighed 3 lbs 5 oz at 9 weeks and is now 13 lbs at almost 2 years and he's a purebred Yorkie with floppy ears.

At first I wanted his ears to stand up, but then decided he was so cute with floppy ears we decided to let nature take its course.

I've attached a picture with floppy ears and all!

Your puppy is still very young. You have plenty of time for her ears to stand. My puppy ears didn't stand until she was five months. And it was after all the taping failed. I took her to the groomers and had them to trim the ears and they was up in three days. My puppy was pretty much that size at that age to. Not bring standard size doesn't mean she's not purebred. She looks all Yorkie to me.
By the way, my Yorkie is 8lbs at six months

Batgirl38 07-27-2014 07:58 AM

This is what I tried. It work for a day or two then they was back down. I think my results were not so good because she kept taking them off. If I could have kept them on for the full week maybe it would have worked.

We took her to the groomer to have her ears shaved, they are just so floppy that they don't stand a chance....yet. She is still very young though. When she lays on her back the ears are so floppy that they fold backwards, as if they are inside out. They raise a little at the base when she hears something, I heard that is a good sign that they won't be completely floppy. I will try taping a little later if they don't show signs of standing on their own.
As far as weight is concerned, she seems to be just as big as my other yorkies and I feel the most important thing is that she is healthy. I love her the way she is. I will be getting a new vet that knows more about yorkies. I couldn't understand why she would question if she was a purebred just because she weighed more than any yorkie she has seen at this age. This was my clue that she hasn't seen many yorkies.

YorkieMomNYC 07-27-2014 01:01 PM

She definitely looks like a Yorkie. The breed "standard" is to have pricked ears, but the origins of breed show that they used to be larger in size, have dropped ears and long tails.

As long as she is healthy and happy, that is really all that matters at the end of the day. Plus, you will love her, no matter what she looks like :)

I still think they will stand. My puppy ears were way more floppy. I thought the same. Give her till four months and if they don't stand, try the taping. But in the mean time, KEEP her ears trimmed.

She was four months here.

OMG she is Gorgeous !!

I will help to keep them shaved but is not a guarantee that they will eventually stand.

She is too cute! My daughters yorkie Mason is 3 years old and has the floppy ears and he is a purebred. He has so much hair that she keeps him mostly in a puppy cut. When he was a pup he had a lot of hair on his ears which weighed his ears down. Since she loved him with floppy ears she didn't bother to cut the hair off his ears. However, just ask him if he wants a treat and those ears go up to the side real quick. Lol. Here's a pic of him. He is so adorable and a sweet boy.
