How much did you pay for your Yorkie? I don't mean to get into anyone's business but I was wondering how much you guys have paid to get a purebred yorkie with limited akc papers and parents with genetic testing done. I've read on some post that a good quality yorkie cost over $1000. I got Cuddles for $400 5 years ago and I think she is a good representative of the breed. She has a very silky coat and has breed standard colors. Her eyelids are black and her nose. She has a docked tail and when her hair was long it was very straight. She hasn't had any major problems but has had to have her teeth cleaned and her knee caps are a little loose. I got her at eight weeks, but I know now she should've stayed longer. What do you think? Did I just get a deal or has prices of yorkies increased over time? Thank you for sharing your experiences Oh and please don't give me criticism about the price I paid for her or the age I got her at. I've been wanting to post this for awhile but was afraid of what you guys would say.... I'm a bit more confident now that that new sticky has been put up :) Thank you! :) |
When getting a pup from a reputable breeder you are normally going to pay $1,000 to $2,500 and even then most reputable breeders aren't making money. It costs a lot to breed and when prices are very low it normally in my opinion means they probably skipped steps in doing the right things like the genetic testing and such. But price does not mean a breeder is good. In my opinion you probably got your dog although perfect from a not so reputable breeder and I am so glad your not having any really big issues. I paid $1,000 for my dog and she ended up coming from a broker who got there puppies from a puppy mill and she has had many many issues but to me is perfect. I will know in the future if I get another puppy how to go about getting one from a reputable breeder thanks to YorkieTalk but I am so glad to have my baby. I am so happy I got her and not someone who would never take care of her issues and love her even with all her faults. |
I paid $1,000 for Sheldon. Parents are tested, but he's not AKC because he is a Biewer and they are only in the foundation stock stage. |

Hi....I paid $850 for my little man and I got him from an excellent breeder. This breeder always kept me up-to-date every week with pictures and videos. Remy was the runt of the little and she was very picky of whose home he was going to live in. Remy's two sisters definitely got all the milk & food. :D She asked me all kinds of questions. She was worried about small children with him which she didn't have to worry because my two children are grown and out on their own. She kept him with her until he was 4 mths old so he could gain more weight. We still communicate and I send pictures to her to keep her updated. My daughter's yorkie cost $1800 three years ago and my sister's yorkie cost $3000 three years ago. All three came from reputable breeders. None of the dogs have any medical issues....thank goodness. So all in all, it is a matter of doing your homework on the breeders and their dogs, asking the proper questions, etc. I hope this helps. |

No not a broker, just someone looking to make a few bucks, that's a byb or at the least an unreputable/unethical breeder. Now If she had many other dogs then that's a different story. You are very lucky because I'm sure she wasn't genetic testing etc. Glad you love your pup and glad you found YT. |
Also...I always check to see if the breeders dogs are AKC registered. |
Thank you! I feel as if I didn't do enough research, but looking back at it, I still feel as if I got her from a good enough breeder. I was also updated every week and was welcome to visit whenever. All of her yorkies lived with her at her house and I got to meet all of them. There were only 8. The lady I got her from was retired and now from what I know does not breed anymore. I believe there was some stuff missing but don't know exactly what. It still wows me every time As for Cookie I know she didn't come from a good breeder. We got her for about the same price as Cuddles and the breeder had many different breeds of dogs. We found Cookie on eBay, (I know, I'm so very smart) and we called the breeder and got her the next day. She doesn't have any problems so far, (Thank God!) but we've only had her for 3, almost 4 years. No mater what happens though I still love them dearly, just like you lovetodream88! |

I didn't purchase any of mine from a breeder. Pebbles was a rehome from a friend and she was purchased from a breeder for about $500. She's just a mess.... :( Doodlebug was from an Amish puppymill auction. Well actually his mom was bought from a rescue at an Amish auction when she was pregnant. We paid $250 for him and drove to PA to pick him up. Bogey was from a shelter in Portage IN and I paid a $50 adoption fee and was refunded the fee after I neutered him....but donated it back. They are overall very healthy. |
This doesn't really apply to me since I have never purchased a Yorkie from a breeder, mind have been rescues/rehomes. That said, I have considered and looked into buying one, and agree that from a reputable breeder that is health testing, breeding with a purpose and to improve the breed, and really researching their pedigrees and bloodlines for any possible problems before breeding, you are generally looking at paying $1000 - $2000 minimum for a pet. Usually more if you want to show. So your baby probably came from a back yard breeder who didn't spend the time or money to do things right to insure a healthy dog free of genetic problems and was just making some extra cash off her puppies. |
My next yorkie will be well searched for thanks to YT. :) I thank all of you for your expertise in the Yorkshire Terrier breed! It has really helped me become the greatest mommy I can be for my kiddos! |

I paid just $700 for my baby. The breeder was great. The mom and dad was on site. She came with papers, shots and health guaranteed. She kept in contact with me on a weekly basis for the first month to make sure I was doing everything right. She gave me her bag of Royal Canin and a blanket with moms scent. |
