Deciding on a Puppy As I mentioned in an earlier thread, I am in the process of looking for a pup. I know what "look" I am searching for but how do I go about that? Ex: I had a breeder send me a pic of a mom with a previous litter (she is having another litter soon) and I am not in love with the "look" of the mom. Lol. I know that sounds terrible, I don't mean it in an awful way...I just would like a darker coat etc. And for $2K, I can be a bit fussy, no?:animal36 I know it's not a science but how do I go about finding a pup with the things I like...do I go by the mom? etc... Lol. Can ya tell I'm completely lost?:D Thanks in advance! |
I don't think it sounds terrible, I think most people look at cute puppies and go by how they look=cute. All Yorkie puppies are cute but an interest in how they will grow, how healthy they will be, what their coat and teeth are like etc. is more important. I REALLY wanted a dog with a nice straight back. I think the safest thing to do is find a breeder you trust that is breeding for the standard and has a line of dogs that you like. Dad and grandparents count too! Good luck! |
PS. Here is an old link for you that might help? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...eeders-ma.html |

Oh yes, of course...health is above everything! My thing is as we all know ALL puppies are cute but they don't stay puppies forever so what they look like as puppies is not what they will look like full grown. So I guess I have to rely on the breeder for what my pup will eventually look like.... I am not making any sense at all....bwahahahha. Can't you all just read my mind? :) |

Hi there, One of the things you could ask "this" breeder is to show you some pics of the previous litter as adults. Also not too sure if this is a repeat breeding ie - same dam and sire, or a different sire. And often times the Yorkies adult coat can lighten up due to a)breeding and or b) just ageing/over time. If you look at show pictures you can better familiarize yourself with some of the "different" looks in the different breed lines. www.ytca.org has a breeder listing by State. |
Thank you! I am going to ask for some more pics..Great ideas. Lol. I'd be completely lost without this place. |
If there are any shows around, it might be good to go to see breeders that might interest you. I don't think it sounds bad for you to have a certain "look" in mind. I knew once I had my pup, it would not make a difference to me because I fall hopelessly in love with my little ones. Despite that, I always preferred a certain "look" also. As you already said, health was my first priority and also a breeder who would give a puppy a good start in life. It makes such a difference in the health, well-being, and temperament, and that's what makes all the difference in the world. Katie's look is a little bit different from my last three little girls who had the same father and were within a year of each other. She was already three, and I loved how her breeder described her personality, and that's what made me fall in love with Katie. Now I think she's gorgeous, perfect in every way, and I wouldn't change one thing about her. I hope you find the puppy of your dreams. |
I don't think it ever occurred to me during puppy shopping this go 'round a particular look. However in looking for a breeder, I found that I wanted a breeder that showed their dogs and understood the health the dogs more than look. But with that, you get a certain look by working with a certain breeder if that makes sense. Coat Color, Coat Type, Ear Set, Size, etc. You'll see the difference between breeders and if you're paying for quality you should get what you want. |

The parents/grandparents should give you a great idea of what your puppy will look like--puppies now and puppies grown up sometimes look COMPLETELY different! |

I found a breeder & had her send me pics of the mom as a baby & an adult.... Obviously as a puppy she is just adorable, but her color changed a lot (I also knows this happens) plus I know everyone grooms their dog differently. Idk.... Disclaimer: I know this stuff is petty :) Let me get the pics. |

My Ziva has a beautiful face- when she looks at me I melt! I picked my second Abby for her personality- knowing that she was not the best looking ever. She has grown into herself and everyone loves her friendliness but she is a bit of a ragamuffin! |

Lol I think that's a great word for how I'm feeling about it.... "ragamuffin" looking is spot on. :) |
