Yes, it must be that your pet insurance will only cover a spay until 8 months old. I've read that before on YT where there is a set amount of time for the spay/neuter to be covered by insurance plans. I am almost positive they would not give preoperative directions over 2 months before the procedure. Usually, the vet will call the night before her scheduled surgery with instruction. It's also a great idea for you to get her chipped at the same time. You are being a responsible good pet owner. :)

My Buttercup was spayed at 8 months right after her 1st heat and my vet said it was better for her to go into heat one time. I hated it for her but did what he said. I was a nervous wreck and cried most of the day until I was able to take her home.She did wonderful ( much better then me), and they also pulled 3 baby teeth for me. First day she wanted to lay around most of the day, but second day back to her ole self. Good luck and will be thinking of you. She'll do fine.

Many insurance providers have that proviso, how-ever they also have the option for your vet to submit a letter to the insurer stating that this dog can not be spayed or neutered at this time for x/y/z medical reasons.

I have also read you should wait until the growth plates are closed. I heard you can get an x-Ray to know for sure.

Yes you can. A lateral view of the tibial plate the last growth plate to close. The tibial plate is at the knee joint.

Good luck with when ever you decide, my only suggestion is to get several onesies that will fit her, for her to wear until the stitches come out. Gina was in a preemie onesie because she was around 3lbs, she's topped out at 4.1lbs. Ask your vet how much sedation they use, mine specializes in small dogs and does only enough to do the surgery and wake up in recovery, also the pre lab and blood work up is a must.
