Although, there is a HUGE difference between not knowing something is harmful and knowing it is and taking the risk anyways. |

I have yet to see anyone imply that they are giving their dog more than a lick or two. While I agree that caffeine can be toxic, the level of toxicity is dose related. Personally, I don't give my dogs anything with caffeine, but my grandmother used to let her dog drink some coffee flavored milk prior to car trips on the advise of her vet. For what ever reason it had a paradoxical effect in her dog and she would sleep the entire 5+ hour trip. |
My dogs have never been interested in coffee or tea, so never had to deal with that. How=ever watch out for an open glass of beer:D Oh and they adore strawberry shortcake. Of course that is my fault as they love strawberries, and in berry season, when I clean the berries they each get a strawberry. And I caught my Razzman last night when I was finishing up dinner, he had snuck up onto the kitchen table and was happily chowing down on some raw cabbage I had shredded:(:( That scamp. He got hell for that one. In terms of nuts raisins grapes etal, I have some covered dishes when I set out those munchies, and then we before bedtime take them up off the end tables etc and put them out of temptation way. I don't know if caffeine is diluted by milk or cream additive... |

I read it as "decaf coffee and (regular) tea" and not that you were referring to them as BOTH decaf. Text is easily misinterpreted. |

Apology accepted and appreciated for the benefit of the forum and people that read that post. |

Even though the coffee has caffeine in it it's diluted by the cream/milk and they didn't get that much of it. My Grandmom's yorkie probably drank more cream than coffee. The median lethal dose of caffeine for dogs is 140 mg/kg, so the median lethal dose for a 5lb (2.7kg) dog is 378mg. An 8oz cup of coffee has 95-200mg of caffeine in 8oz. This is why I believe a few licks will not hurt my dog; I research everything before I give it to her, or loosen up on keeping her from it, and make educated decisions. I've had 5 dogs over 24 years, they lived long and healthy lives, apparently I'm doing something right. Now I have Lola and she's a very healthy 1.5 year old. |

Thank you for the mathematical calculations that clearly break down the absolute risk involved in allowing a dog to drink an 8 oz cup of coffee! None of us that allow our babies to sip a couple of laps, are letting our babies swill that much coffee.....or tea.....and it is even less likely you are doing harm if you are allowing decaf tea or coffee to be ingested.....it is a wonderful thing you did by putting it in black and white, so we can actually see the exact risk involved, instead of issuing a "blanket statement" that letting a dog drink coffee is "irresponsible and abusive"! Thank you! |

Decaf coffee has 2-12mg of caffeine, black tea has 14-70 (decaf has 0-12), and green tea has 24-45mg per 8oz. Caffeine content for coffee, tea, soda and more - Mayo Clinic My bigger concern with allowing a dog to drink more than a few sips of coffee or tea would be the acid. |
I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I love a cuppa tea. ZoE usually licks any spills in my saucer. As posters above noted, the caffeine amount is nominal, in such tiny amounts. |
Gina will try to lick some of the coffee off of my mustache, but in a little over a year of her owning me, she has maybe gotten 3 or 4 licks in, and I use a lot of creamer. My wife made a list of Gina approved foods, after we found out we were poisoning Megan for her 15 years of life, with garlic and onion in scrambled eggs. Megan loved it, Gina gets plain scrambled egg every now and then, no coffee though, unless she licks my mustache. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |
Oh please I love both my dogs and my cats and making a blanket statement someone doesnt love them because they give them a tiny bit of coffee is ridiculous |
My mom likes a little coffee with her milk and then she foams the whole thing in the frother, and Joel loves to hop on Memas lap to sneak some even though I told her no more, I know she still slips him some because he comes downstairs with foam on his beard:p but I'm not worried by the amount of coffee she uses. |
I would like to thank everyone for your in put, and your experiences. I was getting very upset when I would hear ppl allowing their dogs coffee with milk and sugar and dunking cookies and feeding to dogs. It was very hard for me to hold back from telling them coffee was toxic and they could be the cause of their dogs dieing. I am glad that I was able to keep my mouth closed for a change lol, as I now see there are many members that feel this is not dangerous, not even the dunked cookie feeding. i would not promote it, but at least I will not be upset about it anymore. Thank you all again. |
