Not a Real Yorkie
 

I was told by someone on Saturday night that my Sophie cannot be a real Yorkie because she is too big (she is 8lbs). I tried to tell her that Yorkies are all different sizes and I have heard of 15lb Yorkies (Sophie's dad was 14lbs). She said she breeds Yorkies and hers are always between 3 and 6lbs. I couldn't believe she was telling me I don't have a real Yorkie because of her size (there is only a 2lb difference between her 6lb and my 8lb). Has anyone else experienced this; someone telling you they must be mixed with something else because Yorkies do NOT get that big? BTW, she did not even see my puppy; she was only going by what I told her.

Yorkies can and do get that big and even bigger. Breed standard for showing in the ring is 7 pounds and under, but they do come in all different sizes.

If that person was an experienced, knowledgable breeder she would be aware of the history of how the breed was developed and the size of the dogs that went in to making Yorkies, Yorkies. She would also be knowledgable in the fact that even very small dogs can occasionally produce very large dogs.

Hi, I have had 4 yorkies, weights ranged between 10 to 17 lbs, all were pedigrees and AKC registered (if that matters today lol) my last girl was 17 lbs, a big beautiful girl. I had many ppl TELL ME she was NOT a yorkie, ppl that never owned a yorkie, just saw other ones. I had many ppl tell me she had to be a Silky because of her size. My answer's were mostly "what ever" because I got tired of trying to educate stupid non yorkie owners that yorkies come in all sizes. If I had my choice I would want another 17 lb baby, they are much more sturdier then the standard. Ignore these ppl. If you were looking to show your pup then weight / size would matter, if you are looking for a loving pet, weight / size matters not. If you run across this person again and she makes that comment, don't even answer her. Now you have heard of a 17 lb yorkie. She past this Oct. 2013 at age 17 y/o, her picture is in my album, she was a gorgeous girl. My newly adopted 3 y/o lil boy is 12 lbs.

I had heard the term 'teapot Yorkie' on this site and thought it was a cute description of my Sophie. When I mentioned that to her she got a little hot and said there is no such term, no such thing as a teapot Yorkie. I have seen photos of MANY Yorkies that are much bigger than my Sophie, but there was no arguing with her.

My Magnus is 15.5 lbs, has half floppy ears, and is ALL yorkie. Just like people, yorkies (and other breeds) CAN look different from your typical yorkies. If you ever see that lady again, maybe you should suggest she come visit YT.

I am very sorry for the loss of your baby! I lost my little Maltese, Casey in December as well and I am still not over it. I got Bailey (a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix) in February, then Sophie (my Yorkie....or non-Yorkie) a few weeks later.

I am fairly new to YT myself, the term "teapot" I believe is a Yorkie Talk thing, I had never heard of "teapot" either lol, I think it's a very cute term to describe any yorkie that weighs over the standard 7 lbs. I myself would NEVER tell anyone my 17 lber or my new 12 lber was a "teapot" lol and can understand a breeder getting all uptight about that description. Funny she knows there is no such thing as a "teapot" yet as a "breeder" she doesn't know generics can kick out a larger yorkie. Maybe this "breeder" is a BYB, since she doesn't seem to know much about generics. Just MHO. Just ignore her. Some years ago I had 2 of my yorkies in my convertible car,(a 10 lb and a 13 lb) top was down, I was on vacation in Mass. I had some idiot walk up to me, told me he breed yorkies and called mine, 2 horses, lol, I was shocked to have a stranger just walk up to me out of the clear blue sky and say this to me, he tells me if I want a TRUE yorkie he breeds them. I told him with his rudeness I wouldn't take one of his dogs if he gave it to me for free and just drove off. There are a lot of @^&$@ out there. Just ignore them, walk away, don't even waste your breath to answer them. There is NO reason you should have to defend your lil Sofie. I take my lil boy all over with me now that he no longer gets car sick, he is 12 lbs, if anyone were to make a comment about his size, I would just walk away,not even answer them, I got tired of trying to educate stupid ppl on yorkie sizes.

The funny thing is, Sophie is only 8lbs....so that makes her a whopping 1lb over show limit and someone thinks she cannot be a Yorkie? Granted, she is only 5mths old, but her growth has slowed down considerably so I don't think she will get much bigger. Our Maltese' were always on the larger size also, being 12lbs at their prime (breed averages are 5-7lbs). My Bailey (Maltese/Shih Zhu mix) is 11lbs and her parents were 6 and 8lbs. We just grow them big in our house.

Just saw their pics and they're both so adorable! As for that breeder, maybe you shouldn't show her your Sophie... She might have a mental break down realizing that not all "real" yorkies are 3-6 lbs. LOL

Does Sophie have you wrapped around her tiny paws yet? :D

Sophie is my little handful....lol! The vet said the smallest dog in the house generally becomes the one in charge and Sophie is living up to that reputation. We also have a geriatric Maltese in addition to the puppies. Sophie is definitely full of energy, but she is also my little cuddlebug. I am one of those rare people that wishes I could keep them puppies forever....they make me laugh all the time and they are adorable...even when they are being naughty.

I have seen many postings here on YT from people who have been told that their dog was not a Yorkie for various silly reasons. Most people have very little knowledge about pure bred dogs. There are so many non standard Yorkies being sold right now that few people really know what a "real" Yorkie should look like.

The person you spoke to may have some Yorkies that she breeds but she obviously knows very little about Yorkshire Terriers or genetics in general.

We get that a lot with Kyra because of her coloring. I would just ignore them and love my baby.

Kyra is beautiful, love the outfits! What do people say is wrong with her coloring....do you mean because she kept a lot of the black? Sophie is mostly black, except around her face, chest and legs. She is still young, so her color might change, but I am hoping she keeps the black.

They are both adorable... :)
