I must admit, this is my first ever Yorkie. I am not familiar with what a 'pure bred' should look like either, but I did see both her mom and dad when I picked her up and they both appeared to be Yorkies to me. She is not registered, but I have no intention of showing or breeding her so it makes no difference to me. I was just kind of confused that someone would say that without ever seeing the dog (in person or photo), just basing her opinion on size. I would like to talk to this person again....maybe she will let me come over and play with the puppies....how much fun would that be????

The fact that you love your dog and are happy with her is all that matters. There are all kinds of people out there. The person you talked to sounds like someone that is opinionated and wants to appear to be an expert. She is clueless since the weight of the dog has very little to do with what breed it is.

Don't feel bad. My past yorkies were in the 10-12 pound range and I had an old coworker insisted that they were probably silky terriers and not yorkies, cause she breeds dogs (can't remember if she actually bred yorkies specifically). I was like.. no they are yorkies, they are registered that way (one was from a showdog line), they aren't standard size, that's all. But yea it was aggravating when she kept insisting they were silkies >.>;;

It's it horrid, when some people think they have the right to tell you what your dog is and isn't. They should learn to bite their tongues, if they can't say nice things.

Both my dogs are bigger than standard, like yours, Caleb is only a couple of pounds heavier.

It is inconcievable to me, as a breeder, to walk up to a complete stranger and make a "blanket statement" that their dog is not a "real yorkie"! I would love it if ANYONE that is confronted with such a remarkably stupid,rude statement, would ask the person making the statement what their qualifications are for such a deduction, and if they indicate they are a "breeder", get the name of their kennel.....ask them what their predominate lines are, how long they have been breeding yorkies, how much time they have put into studying pedigrees and the history of the breed....hold their feet to the fire.....that will indicate to that person you may actually have some working knowledge about the breed and YOUR dog and your dogs pedigree.....BYB will not generally have that much interest or knowledge in what they are breeding. Of course there is no term "teapot" yorkie......it is a lighthearted play on the term "tea cup yorkie", one being smaller than usual pups, the other being larger than usual pups. Crazy, rude, intrusive, nosey, "know it all" busy bodies....do not pay these people any attention....she was trying to sell you a dog and she obviously has not been breeding for very long if she has not ever had a "throwback" outlier pop up in a litter!

Its rude what was said to you, OP, but there is no way to regulate manners so just use your 'ignore' function when required ..lol


My yorkie has a pink nose stripe, cotton fur and is 3.6 lbs. I think his head weighs more than his body - maybe he's a mouse and not a Yorkie ..


We can have faux yorkies together :D

Sophie is an absolutely adorable Yorkie girl, and you just don't listen to ignorant rude people who say anything different to you.

What on earth makes people think they have a right to make comments like that? Geeez.
