Do You Really Need to Pluck the Inside of Your Yorkies Ears? I heard that hair left in a dogs ear causes ear infections. I've plucked his ears twice, but is it really necessary. I noticed once I did it he had ear wax, and I'm not sure what else built up in his ear. When the hair was left there he didn't have those problems. |
I never have and mine are nine and never had a ear infection. Im a big believer in if it aint broke dont fix it. I dont express anal glands either and they have never needed it done |
Bogey had an ear infection from not having his ear hair plucked. They were going to a groomer but I've been doing my own grooming. I think it actually depends on your Yorkie whether or not the hair needs to be plucked. Chachi mentioned anal glands and Bogey also has an issue right around the same time as his ear infection. When I took him to the vet I was told "ears and rears" go together. Now I'm thinking it might have been caused by a food issue. |
My groomer plucks the ear hairs, mine have not had any ear infections...however, if I groomed mine, I don't know if I could pluck the ear hairs. Every time the vet checks their ears he comments how clean their ears are. Not sure if plucking the ear hairs have anything to do with it. Mine have needed their anal glands expressed a few times. Not a lot but a couple of times, Maggie more than Buster. |
I don't pluck Blazer's ears, he's never had a problem. |
Thanks for the advice. Some professionals say you should, and others are against it. i'm definitely going to stop. I don't like him being in pain anyway. |
I've never plucked or had Hannah's plucked but I was going to ask my vet about it on our next visit. Very good question. I'm looking forward to seeing what others say about it. |
I THINK Jackson's groomer does this but I'm not sure. She comes every 6-8 weeks or so. I don't ever clean his ears though. |
I have to do Barney's or he gets ear infections. Fortunately, he likes it and sits very nicely while it's done. |
No, it's really not necessary. I have never plucked my 3 dog's ears. Like in humans, dogs have hair in their ears for a good reason, for protection from foreign bodies. Ear hair doesn't cause ear infections, germs/bugs and a disease state cause infection. |

I really think it would depend on the dog. Some of mine have very little or no hair in their ears while others have a ton of hair in their ears. The ones with a lot of hair in their ears are more prone to ear infections. Of course environment and diet also play a big part in why some dogs get ear infections and some don't. |

Also when I give baths I also use BioGroom Ear cleaner to dry any left over water after a bath. |
I pluck the ear hair. I used my fingers to dig in and pull it out for years but recently bought a little tweezor shaped like scissors from Jenny at TopLinePet and it works great. I do a little at a time. I also use Bio-groom ear cleaner liquid weekly after a bath. We had ear infections early on in puppyhood but since using Bio-Groom at every bath we have not had any further issues. I think it's great stuff, and I am of the opinion that ear hair should be plucked out. My vets always pluck it out when the dogs are under anesthesia too. |
If you use ear powder when plucking the ear hair comes out quite easily. |
