what trick do you guys use to feed your yorkies pills :) Buddy doesnt like to take pills. guess they dont taste good to him. i usually have to act liike im giving him a treat and then put it in his mouth followed by some water in a syringe. would it be a good idea to try and wrap the pill in a piece of cheese? hes currently on royal canin yorkie dry puppy food and if i put the pill in there he will just eat around it. thanks |
I just discovered a new one I put them in a piece of macaroni and cheese lol. Works great. Slide the pill right into the noodle. |
Peanut Butter !! :D Just take the pill and p. butter and dab on the tongue. |
My poodle was on medicine most of her life and was a master pill spitter/sniffer. We usually put the pill in her wet food or some cheese (thick sliced works better). If that didn't work we'd put it in lunch meat (ham, turkey), or meat (chicken, hamburger-no onions). I tried things like cream cheese and peanut butter, but they were messy and she just licked around it. Watch your puppy for a bit after giving the pill, a few times my poodle cheeked it and spit it out in another room. |
You can try putting it in a treat, cheese, or a piece of chicken. Mine is an expert at eating whatever the pill is in except for the pill. So when she had surgery a vet tech gave me a pill shooter, it sounds bad but it's not it just drops the pill gently down there throat no shooting lol. If you get one though you have to make sure it has a rubber tip or it could scratch there throat. |
Hiding pills in food doesn't work for Teddy either. I have to put the pill in the back of his mouth and gently hold his mouth closed. He doesn't resist too much and swallows. I wouldn't try this if your pup really fights it. |
thanks for all the advice. he doesnt resist too much if he think its a treat because his mouth will at least open. sometimes its like a mad fight to get him to open his mouth. im going to try the ham trick and also a thick piece of cheese as well to see if that helps. im glad the vet gave me a syringe, at least that helps him swallow once i get it in his mouth. |
I use Greenie pill pockets, in a pinch liverwurst works all the time. |
Care to share where I can find these :) |
I just looked at your other posts. Just wondering why is your 9 week old puppy on pills? Given his age and size I'd try to use low fat low salt meats to give the pills first, like chicken breast or low fat hamburger cooked into a patty or meatball. Keep the pieces as small as you can. I'd be afraid of the fat and salt in cheese and the salt in ham. Same with liverwurst, I used it as a last resort for my poodle a few times, but it's really not good for dogs (fat, salt, spices) and would be horrible for a tiny puppy. Pill pockets are great (I've never used them but a lot of people like them), but I think they'd be too big for a tiny puppy. I think petsmart and petco sell them. Good luck |

For years, this has been my very favorite and successful attempt at giving pills! The kiddos LOVE this and are clueless! In the past, I have used little raw beef meat balls, pills pushed into Vienna sausage slice, cheese wrapped around the pill, and even mini ravioli.....none worked as well as the pill inside the elbow macaroni! |
I like to use cream cheese. IMO it's sticky like peanut butter but it hides the take of the pill better. All of mine love it! |

My Trinket loves cheese, so I shove her pill into a small glob of gouda, and she swallows it without chewing. |
Mine take it if there is peanut butter on it. |
Ima have to get me some of those greenies pill pockets. Thanks matese To the poster asking why he was talking pills..the reason is because Vet gave me some sentinel tablets and also a dewormer pill to give him |
a slice of ham and wrap it up |
Crush it between 2 spoons, add powdered parmesan cheese & let her lick it up. No chance of cheeking & spitting that way. |
I use low sodium chicken or turkey breast. For an extra special treat I warm it for 10 seconds, just enough to release the juices. They can't resist! |
Pill pockets they are the bomb...I put the pill in and then mush the pocket all my pups loved the pill pockets..you can get them at Petsmart, Petco, just awesome. I get the one for capsules then you can use a half, more for the buck. |
Thanks everyon3 for the replies. I went and got some chicken flavored pill pockets and put the pill in but the pill pocket was kinda big so he nibbled on the whole thing until just the pill was left. I can say he loved them but I had to split the pocket into 2 pieces. |
Several of my dogs are on meds for various issues and I work in a vet clinic so I give A LOT of meds. ;) Some of the things I've found that work the best are cheese, hot dogs, cream cheese, canned dog food made into a meatball (we do this a lot at the clinic) and peanut butter. Peanut butter works really well if you have a dog that finds the pill in the food and spits the pill out. (I have a Standard Poodle that does this and I swear he does it because he knows he'll get something else to eat). I've also made my own pill pockets out of flour, milk and peanut butter. I found the recipe online and they're WAY cheaper than what you can buy in the store or from your vet. The recipe is 1 tablespoon milk, 1 tablespoon peanut butter and 2 tablespoons flour. I roll them into balls and then use the end of a butter knife to make an indent for the pill then lay them out on a cookie sheet until they stiffen up some and then store in the fridge in a tupperware container. The dogs love them. |

same reason I get the one for capsules. |
My finger down her throat.. My girl can't have any of this stuff. If I'm being really nice I'll coat in sweet potato first. |

I use a pill shooter too . .. It guarantees they take the pill |
reply my masie the same just she not eating at the moment my vet gave her sme tablets to tke god knos how im gonna get em dwn her esp when she doent eat at the moment I usesd to push tablets thro meat and she tke it but I cnt even do that now:mad: |
The easiest way I have found is using that cheese in a can stuff. I just spray a dab on my finger and shove the pill in it. That stuff is so popular with my dogs they remember the last time they had to take a pill and they all crowd around for a bite. Of course if I had a dog that was on medication every day I would use a pill popper or canned dog food. They really don't need that cheese that often. Other things I have found that work are ranch dressing and raw meat or cooked chicken I think you shouldn't let him think his pill is a treat though. That is going to make him distrust you and could eventually be a training problem as a treat isn't that big a deal anymore. |
