My 14 year old girl 1 Attachment(s) Trinket |
Got a notice from Vet ... she is due for her Bordatella, Corona virus and DHP-P. I hate to do this to her at her age, with her list of problems (collapsing trachea, arthritis, lp, hip dysplasia). She is always lethargic for a few days after the shots. What are others doing about shots for older dogs? |
I'm not expert, but I would seriously question the vet about wanting to do these at her age. I guess it depends on how much exposure your girl has. With my mini Schnauzer, they stopped vaccinations in his senior years, based on low risk being in the house most of the time and not exposed to much. |
Thanks! I appreciate the input from others on this forum. I keep her indoors or in our back yard. When the grandkids are here they walk her around the park in a baby carriage ($10 at Goodwill). She isn't exposed to other animals. So I will discuss the shots with the Vet. We haven't had a problem with fleas this year in Oxnard, so haven't used flea treatment for about six months. |
My little girl, Ashley, lived to a month shy of seventeen. She was an active little girl up until a couple of days before she passed away. At close to eleven, my vet discovered Ashley had an enlarged heart most likely due to tracheal issues, since everything on her echocardiogram were within normal limits. At that point, my vet advised me not to do anymore shots. We walked miles each day, so she was exposed to other dogs, and Ashley did fine without her shots. I never gave any of my Yorkies Corona, Lepto, or Bordadella vaccines. Trinket is really precious. |
While my Sophie isn't old she did have a problem with being very lethargic after her shots one year. Ever since that time they give her a small steroid injection at the same time as her vaccines and it has really worked. Now she doesn't seem effected at all. |
We stopped Presley's shots at 15 because of his conditions. My vet recommended it. He was never around any other dogs and rarely outside anymore because he was blind. He lived to 17 1/2. No issues with not having any shots. |
I have stopped giving vaccines to my 11 yr old chihuahua. She never leaves our yard. |
Mine are 14, we are not doing any vaccines except rabies. |
my last girl, vet stopped all vaccines except Rabies at 13 y/o, she had to be put down at age 17 y/o. She was also not around other dogs. |
My Delsi, who lived to be almost 16 years had puppy shots and never had another. (she almost died with the first shots) My girls get rabies every three years and that's about all. I read somewhere a long time ago that after all their initial shots, that having anymore was not necessary. I think this issue is debatable with Vets.. |
Thanks everyone. Called the Vet for a consult instead of shots. |
OK so no shots, just fecal exam and biopsy of two mammary tumors today. |
Hope all goes well with the biopsies. :( I would only have concerns at the because of kennel cough. My old guy and I traveled and so unfortunately (and though they mostly did not check) I had to have his health record up to date. Otherwise I would have just made sure on the Bortadella. |
Trinket needs dental cleaning. They require bordatella because they keep her for observation after anesthesia. Will wait for result of biopsy ... Then if surgery to remove tumors needed, both procedures will be done under one use of anesthesia. |
