Do yall take your dogs for regular walks? I was just wondering how often if at all small breed owners walk their dogs. |
I try going every morning before it gets too hot. A tired dog is a happy dog lol |
Abby and Ziva walk a mile a day- we have a few different routes figured out. Now that it's hot they walk after 7pm and skip if they have had a long swim. I was looking for a coupler for their harnesses but just tied the two leashes together about 15" up and they have learned to walk beautifully together! |
No but I wish I could. I live in the country and we have hawks and owls and coyotes. I guessed right when I read the title of your thread. You are in Texas where we say "Yall". |
Y'all is a very efficient word Joyce lol. So what does your little one do for exercise? |
We walk every day. Our loop is a little less than a mile but we stop to sniff, eat, bark, poop, stare and just generally chill. So not really a cardio event - and it's HOT here too! I feel guilty we aren't logging really hard core aerobic walks but we do play alot inside daily - fetch, chase, jump around. Joni seems to be pretty tired by the end of the day. |
Everyday. If I don't walk them, they sulk. In the cooler months, we go out 2 x's a day. In the morning after their breakfast (I'm so not an early morning person) & again in the evening. In the hotter months, like now, we go for longer 35-45 min late evening walks. |
I have to admit I do it way less now that we're in the dead of summer in the San Antonio area. Our air is so humid that it doesn't really cool off much when the Sun gets low on the horizon. She gets tons of exercise chasing lizards, birds, and squirrels around the yard though. |
Yorkiefan I just took mine out in the san antonio heat. It wasnt horrible today and a nice breeze. We went out around 8pm. I hear you though. I asked this question because we dont walk our dogs nearly as much as we should and we have a medium sized dog in addition to our yorkiechon. |

We walk every day, barring bad weather or me feeling under the weather. When we could walk in our neighborhood, I took the boys twice a day, morning and evening. Now we only go to the park in the evening. It's the highlight of my boys' day. |
In the summer, we don't much, because I spend a lot of time at my dads house where has a big fenced in yard with a pool so he gets a lot of running in AND tonsss of swimming which tires him out far more than a walk. We tend to walk more in the spring & fall. We don't live in a neighborhood so it involves me driving to parks, etc. If we lived in a neighborhood, we'd be walking every day. When we do walk, we typically go 2-3 miles. When we go hiking in battlefields, etc, we can do anywhere from 5-7 miles. |
Now that the warm weather is here, I take Cody for walk early morning everyday before it gets to hot. I have a nice size yard that he uses during the day. Winter months it all depends on how cold it is, under 35 degrees, we don't do walks, we do back yard, providing there is no snow. |
At least once, and many times two or three times a day. They LOVE to check the area out, specially my Males. Most often times, we'll do about a half hour with all, then drop the Females off and continue with the Males for that much more or longer. |
No, I do not. Just occasional. |
My boys have tons of energy, so we tend to do two long-ish walks per day (early morning and evening), then I try to do a mini walk or two during the day depending on my workload. |
At least once a day for 20-30 minutes, sometimes twice. I've found it greatly helps with behavior issues. One of mine has a tendency to be a hoarder when it comes to toys. He was beating up other dogs who even looked at his toys. The first thing a behaviorist told me to do was increase his exercise. I could see the difference when he didn't have as much excess energy. We get a lot of snow in the winter, but the dogs still look forward to their walks. |
I feel like a slacker now! Well I felt like that before I asked this question lol. I am inspired now. We took the dogs out yesterday (the whole family yikes!). We have a 6 year old and a 3 year old and sometimes they can be a p.i.t.a. (but we love them). If I could get out of the house alone I think the walks would go better. My husband took our bigger dog and I took our little guy. The dogs do really well its mostly the kids! I'm gonna try to get out at least five times a week now. We have gone weeks without walking the dogs and it causes me guilt. We are relatively new dog owners. We got our big guy in February and our yorkie-chon in May. So they haven't been here long. I'm determined to be better and more consistent in exercising them. |
I walk my two at least once a day for 45 minutes and sometimes twice a day if the weather is nice. If I am not ready to walk by 7:30 A. I have one that starts running back and forth from my closet to the door and barks until we go. Both of mine don't like to walk in the cold (I don't either) so they have extra energy in the cold months that they burn off chasing each other. |

I walk Gizmo twice a day, before work and after dinner. He's a little lazy cuz usually about half way he wants me to pick him up. As we walk he consistently looks up at me and when I stop and ask him what he wants he sits in front of me and I ask 'do you want up?' and he stands up and lifts his hind leg so I can pick up. I carry him for a little then back down he goes and he seems fine. However, when it comes to going up the stairs he doesn't want to. He will run two steps ahead of me and sit on the step in front of me so I can pick him up. He's a little spoiled.... :D |
No I don't. I'm such a slacker. I blame it on where I live. I used to live in a subdivision and it was so easy to just walk out the front door and go for a walk around the subdivision (although fences weren't allowed in the sub, so when you saw a dog in a yard, you never knew if they had invisible fence and it was contained or if it was going to come running after you). Now I live on a main road (two lane 45mph zone that people routinely do 55+ down), and have to load ZoE into the car and drive to the nearby walking trails. They are literally just a few miles away but it's still a pita. I do have a fenced in yard so Zo gets to run around a lot in the spring, summer and autumn. I still like to take her for walks on a leash every once in a while just to keep up good leash habits. |
Yes twice a day |
Does running around in the yard 4-5 times a day as good as a walk? |
We too go out not less than twice a day. Mornings and before going to sleep. We go around the block which is about 30 minutes with all the stops. Also they go out just to pee twice more, but just an in & out. My eldest son says I pamper them too much but I just don't see how they can hold it between the longer walks. If I don't take them out there will sure be some accidents and Cayo destroys the pee pads, so he doesn't use them anymore. |
Yes, here is our schedule Pippin is over 10 mos old. I found that transitioning from training pads to outside potty (winter to spring) went a lot easier if we were on a walk, rather than me standing over her in the backyard to go pee. 6:30 am up and out to pee Pippin eats I get dressed for work Out for a 10 min walk to pee and poop I go off to work Mom picks up Pippin for the day She is home by 5 I'm home by 6:30, out to pee Dinner for Pip, she gets a toy I eat dinner 20-30 min walk to pee and poop around 8 or 8:30 9:45 Just out side to pee Bed at 10 Start all over again. Weekends are a little different and except for am and pm the days are not really scheduled as well as during the week. She can tell time and will let me know around 7:45 after dinner when it is time for a walk. She tends to race around the block, pulling and tugging, sniffing so that by the end we are both tired. But we are working on that. |
Just took Cook out for a nice 30 minute walk. I think I'll probably go back to doing it every day like in the spring. |

Day two and I took the dogs out. Its sad that two days in a row makes me feel accomplished. Our yorkie-chon got home drank some water and went to bed in his crate. He's pooped! |
