Found A Baby

I haven't posted in here in a while since I lost Nico. It was just too painful! But yesterday I was on my way to the grocery store and a dog ran out in front of me. She ran the other way and the car in on coming traffic had to slam on his breaks as well. I jumped out of the car to see about the dog and she came running to me and tried to climb in my arms! She was filthy and trembling with no tag. I took her home, bathed her, took her to the vet. She's around 8 months old and very much Yorkie! She is so sweet! My daughter has named her Belle.

rubymoon2072 06-05-2014 04:48 AM

wow guess that was meant to be!! congrats on Belle!

matese 06-05-2014 05:19 AM

That was awesome of you. You saved her life with her running in traffic like that. Looks like she was meant to be yours with her running to you like she did. Poor sweet lil baby, she has found a caring and loving mommy. Please keep us updated on her adjustments to living with her new family.

Wylie's Mom 06-05-2014 06:22 AM

Thank God you were able to catch her!!! So many dogs will just run away from you, and there is nothing you can do and you feel so helpless. When I find a stray, I always check the lost ads on CraigsList and elsewhere, then I also post "found" ads. I also put up posters around where I found the dog in case her poor owners are desperately looking for the doggie. Best of luck!

DvlshAngel985 06-05-2014 06:23 AM

Poor baby. She must have been so scared. How wonderful your timing was to be there to save her! I wonder if she accidentally got out of her house? Did you try looking for her owners? If no one steps forward to claim her, it was truly meant to be.

I agree Ann!

I certainly hope the poor baby's family isn't desperately searching for their baby, surely anyone who has ever had a Yorkie can imagine the heartache of "losing" a pup....I'm glad you found her, I'm glad she is safe, but I hope you will take every opportunity to find her momma! Good Luck! Thanks so much for taking care of that sweet baby!

She is malnourished. Skittish. And her hair is coming out. She has not been taken care of. The vet said it's a blessing we found her. I can not see putting her back into that life! I would need definite proof she'd be taken care of!

I'm glad you saved this pup from running around in the street. Please consider that a loose dog may easily be mistaken for an uncared-for dog. When my Teddy was 8 months old, he could have easily been mistaken for being malnourished by some people (very skinny puppy!). If he had gotten out of the house, he would have been skittish around strangers and scared, and his coat would have been a disaster within a short time.

My Lacey looked like she was dying when she was found, she was matted and didn't look anything like the pup I loved, and that was after just a couple days, she was thin because she was ill and was without meds.

I really am glad you found her, I just would do everything in your power to get that baby home just like what you would want someone to do for you...your assumption may be right or not....I just know how horrible I felt when we couldn't find our Lacey, its worse than death of a beloved pup, the not knowing....that's all, I hope you continue to do the right things for this pup that you saved.

Please keep in mind that even a dog lost only for a couple days can look absolutely horrendous from being loose for only 48 hours - they truly can. We have a thread here somewhere that demonstrates this from one of our rescuers who posts here. I'll contact her and see if she remembers the thread.

So please, never assume that bc a dog looks terrible - that the owners aren't desperately looking for her. She could also have some illness they were treating her for, and that could be why she looks bad. Just please have an open mind that her family could be totally devastated.

I know if one of mine went missing, I'd be...well, I don't have words for how I'd feel bc I'd be way beyond devastated. I'd sure want whomever found them to try and find me.

lynzy420 06-05-2014 07:25 AM

Also, the skittish etc., are normal behaviors, under the circumstances.

tassibo 06-05-2014 07:29 AM

I've been keeping an eye out. I lost Nico for 2 weeks once and he was returned so I know the feeling. All I'm saying is I want to make sure she is taken care of. I'd never deliberately keep someone's baby. Thank you all so much!

Balbrt1 06-05-2014 08:47 AM

Good for you. She sounds like she needs a wonderful life.

It was very kind of you to pick this poor lost pup off the streets and help her. But you do have an obligation to look for her owners by law. Even if she looked neglected, matted and malnourished to you that might not be the case. All 3 of mine got out of the yard a few years back and Pebbles was missing the longest....20 minutes and she looked like a homeless dog in that short of a time. It really doesn't take long for them to show the signs that make them appear neglected. Here's a link to how to reunite a lost pet with their owners.

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/mis...ir-owners.html

The behaviors of a lost dog know as xenophobic temperament might lead you to believe that the dog was neglected and I am very surprised at your vet.

Quote:

Rescuer Behaviors That Create Problems
People who find stray dogs often misinterpret the dog's behavior; they assume that the cowering, fearful dog was "abused" when in fact the dog has a xenophobic temperament and has been shy and fearful since it was a puppy, due to genetics and puppyhood experiences. Dogs found in rural areas are often assumed to be "dumped" and homeless; many rescuers never think this could be a dog that was lost. Some people who find a stray dog that does not have a collar automatically assume it is "homeless" and therefore they immediately work to place the dog rather than attempt to find the dog's owner. In addition, the first place the owner of a lost dog will search for his or her dog - the local shelter - is typically the last place that someone who finds a loose dog will take it (due to the fear of euthanasia)!
Here is the entire link for the article that the above description is mentioned in and I strongly urge you to read through it. There might be a family desperately looking for this little one.

Recovery Tips: Lost Dog Behavior | Missing Pet Partnership

Also, on Facebooks there are many pages for Lost Dogs in each state. If you have a FB please check this out. I'm just amazed how often and how many dogs go missing every day. But thanks to people posting and reposting the lost and found pictures their are so many happy ending.

Please do not just assume that you do not need to look for the owners or that they were neglectful in their ownership. I find stories like this very sad. :(

You need to do more that just look. You are obligated to post fliers or an ad that you have found this dog. When you pick up an animal you cannot just make judgement on their supposed care or lack there of. Please at least post to the FB groups and make a really effort to find the owners.

Lovetodream88 06-05-2014 09:32 AM

Please please put some ads up and call your shelters and vets offices. This could very well be somebody's loved pet that got out and they have been searching for. This dog could belong to a family with a child who is crying every night asking where there beloved dog is. All it takes is a few hours out in the woods to look like a mess and have issues pop up. This dog could have ran out the front door when it was opened and gotten out and not been found for awhile that doesn't mean it is unloved. How would you feel in this situation? I could never just keep someone's pet not looking for there owner because I would not want someone to do that to me.

I know it's terrible, in my opinion keeping a dog and never looking for there owner is like stealing a dog.

One thing you can do is post a found dog ad somewhere with a short description for example:
Female dog found, vet estimates ___ months old, coat colors Black and Tan. If this sounds like your dog please email pictures to xxx@something.com.

That way you would get your proof that she was loved and cared for. What loving pet owner doesn't have millions of pictures of their babies, right? :) I know I'm guilty if that! They could positively ID the pup and you would have helped someone reunite with their baby as you were when Nico went missing.

crazydoglade 06-05-2014 10:41 AM

The yard guys let my foster Olivia out monday evening when we were gone. Luckily some kids found her and another lady kept her until we found her. She's been with us since january and is loved very much. When we went to get her the lady had bathed her and she'd lost weight since she wouldn't eat. She's a scrawny little thing anyway. She had been to the groomer monday morning so appearances are frequently deceiving. Please check the shelters and see if she's chipped. It's easy to judge. I'm unfortunately frequently guilty also. if they really don't want her maybe they will let you keep her.

Thanks for the info. I have done just that. We live in a small town and the vet has all of my information if anyone has lost their dog. She had no chip or tag. As far as her health is concerned I was only going by what the vet said...and she is flea ridden and losing her hair. We are doctoring her up until she is claimed. Had I not gotten her she would have been ran over. She isn't eating too well but she has been resting beautifully. Thanks for all of your concern and support. Please do not worry. We are not dog thieves. We just want the dog healthy and taken care of.

tassibo 06-05-2014 12:27 PM

Update...

I had a woman ride up into my yard on a bicycle and tell me the dog was hers. She kept calling it a "he" and couldn't tell me the breed...only that it was a small dog with different colors. She has no pictures. Sigh...this is going to be a process!!!

And it the owner loves the dog they will be looking for it as well. Best of luck to everyone involved and thank you for caring enough to pull this little angel out of harms way.

This makes me happy. It sure didn't sound like you were looking from what you originally posted. Maybe I read it wrong, but that was my impression. One last advice and I promise to leave you alone. I know you're vetting the doggy out of your own pocket, but if and when the owner is found, don't expect to be reimbursed. I know that sucks, but it's a possibility. I remember this happening to someone a long time ago. They found a pup, vetted it, and then found the owners. That person was so upset she didn't get reimbursed for her expenses.

You know I do believe I was just attacked. The good for you meant. Good for you for taking care of it and not allowing anything happen to her. I once had a beagle and a yellow lab come to my house for a day. Fed them both but had no where to keep them. By the next morning they had both killed on the highway. Some would say why did you not tie them up others they were not yours to keep she saved the fur baby from being killed. I am sure no one would steal a dog as I feel she has been a blessing for the poor baby when it needed someone the most. Why bash someone who is trying to help. Same way you did another person just today. Is it better to take the lost dogs to animal control to be put down? I am just saying I think they are good people tring to help

This happens more than you would ever think it would and it's very sad. There have been stories on YT where members have looked for years and it turned out that their dogs were picked up by strangers and kept....YEARS :(

This woman is a YT member and has a FB page. Her dogs were missing for 18 months and it took the police to get them back. It was all over the news when they were finally found.

https://www.facebook.com/Findbaxterandcooper

There are so many FB pages for lost dogs all over the country and people are always offering to take lost dogs for their own. These dogs have homes and families looking for them. I was looking on CL yesterday and there was a family posting a $1,000 reward for their lost YorkiePoo and the picture was of the granddaughter with the missing dog.

Did you happen to read the link that I posted about AnnaBell? She was a beautiful dog and after only ONE DAY of being lost she looked like she was a homeless street dog. :(

Balbrt1 06-06-2014 06:28 AM

I know all about stray dogs. I worked with a shelter and I worked at a vet clinic before is retired so I am not a kid. You don\'t have to tell me . I know people steal dogs but in this case i do believe she was only trying to help the dog. I want to say thank you for helping the poor baby. If there is an owner trying to find her. They will show up.
