comet cleanser Please help me and my yorkie
 

Hello. Please help me find the correct answer.

On Tuesday the 27th around 11am my mom and I, along with our yorkies were out side washing some patio chairs with comet cleanser. my smallest yorkie 2.5lb was standing very close to the chair my mom did not see him and she dumped comet cleanser on his head/face (it didn’t help that there was some wind right on his direction. I quickly rinsed his face and head and removed all the cleanser. He seemed t be acting normal. Yesterday the 28th he started have a reverse sneeze, which he sometimes gets if he gets to excited or drinks water to fast. But this time it lasted super long. at least 10 min. I wasn’t with him before he got the revers sneeze so I thought he drank water and he inhaled it. After that he was his normal self. Playing, running, eating and drinking water. Close to 9pm we went on a walk and he was fine. After the walk when we got home he got another reverse sneeze. It was a quick one though. He then was his normal self again. but around 12midnight he was slowly turning in circles and gagging like he wanted to throw up. That lasted a couple of minutes. then he seemed fine and he went to sleep. This morning (29th) (my day off) I was sleeping in and I hear him gagging like he was vomiting but worse. I immediately jumped out of bed and found him turning and falling having a hard time to breath and he couldn’t get up he seemed like he couldn’t control his head. Like maybe he was having a seizer (?) it was a horrible moment. I picked him up and from his nose there was a yellow foam coming out and he couldn’t breath I forced his mouth open and he was able to catch his breath but foam was still coming from his nose and mouth and he was still gagging. This went on for what seemed to be hours. But it probably was a few long min. he seems ok after he was able to breath.



Could this be happing do to the comet cleanser 2 days ago? I know for sure it dropped on his head, but he probably inhaled it to. I’m very worried as he is so tiny 2.5lb 3y/o. Please help as what I should do. I was thinking to take him to the vet but he is a little aggrieve and gets super agitated whenever people get near him I don’t want him to get worse. Thanks so much

I would have been at the vet already. Comet contains chlorine bleach which is VERY corrosive and would easily damage the mucous membranes of the airway.

Please get to the vet ASAP, I found the following about Comet and dogs:

The concern is that this product is irritating to the stomach and mucus membranes in the mouth and throat. It can cause ulcers in these tissues.
The pain, inflammation, redness and swelling may not be visible for 2-4 hours after the Comet was eaten. The full extent of the injury won't be known for 12 hours after exposure as the corrosive burns take that long to show up.
Treatment of burns in the mucosa should include antibiotics, pain medication as needed, gastrointestinal protectants (e.g. sucralfate), anti-inflammatories (corticosteroid use is controversial) and general supportive care.
In cases with severe oral burns or esophageal burns, your veterinarian may have to place a feeding tube into the dog's stomach so that food and water can be given to him through this tube while the mucosa heals. This can take weeks. There is a risk of a stricture or narrowing forming in the esophagus.
Treatment for a stomach ulcer or burns of the mucosa in the mouth and throat involves giving 3 drugs:


1. Sucralfate (Sulcrate, carafate) which acts as a bandaid to stick to the areas that are ulcerated. Thus, it is very important that this medication be given on an EMPTY stomach.

3. Antibiotics to prevent bacteria entering the blood stream through the ulcer in the stomach.

He could very well have an aspiration pneumonia. Put away the keyboard, grab the car keys and get to the vets NOW. A delay in treatment could very well cost him his life.

Good Grief this baby needs to see A VET NOW !!! Yes this can be a very bad reaction to cleanser that went up his nose and into his system.

I guess I just don't understand waiting these few day's and not taking him to the Vet.

I called the vet to tell them i was on my way and the vet tech who knows my dog since he was a puppy recommended to wait. that he doesn't need to see a vet right away. she said to keep an eye on him and if he is acting normal (eating,drinking water,playing, and happy) that there is no need for him to see a vet NOW.

IMHO you should see another vet. Any vet who takes a call from someone who says their pup was exposed to cleanser, is demonstrating a new behavior and who is not their self is not a good vet. That pup should be examined and probably receiving the meds just in case. I totally disagree with this situation and of waiting.

If my vet's office told me to wait in a situation like this one, I would be shopping for a new vet.

How your dog is acting is not normal and you are doing more harm by waiting!

Please DO NOT self treat this baby with the meds listed!!!! This baby MUST be seen by a vet ASAP! He more than likely inhaled the powder and has an aspiration pneumonia!!! At the very least, he could have damage to the mucus membranes in his throat and trachea and lungs....please get him to the vet ASAP!

You also mentioned you know for sure the can of comet hit his head...for goodness sake bring him in to a vet to be checked out.

I never said the can! the powder is what dropped on his head. why would i say "but he probably inhaled it to" if it was a can and not powder

I called another vet and they said the same thing. to watch and wait. if he does anything else ill take him to a vet. but for now I'm going to go with the professional opinion and wait

You asked for advice and have been given advice, you told us symptoms you got the only answer our unprofessional collective group could give. I don't know any vet that would say to NOT come in, makes no sense to me.


In the past few years you have come with hot topics so to speak and seem to reject replies, we are genuinely concerned for your pup, but you need to share our same concern and go with the advice of several experienced Yorkie owners and get to the vet NOW.

I truly don't understand why you are waiting. Your dog had an episode of respiratory distress. You question whether he had a seizure. You are going to wait until...? I hope the next time is not too late for him.

I've never, ever had a vet tell me not to bother to come in. Even my least favorite vet would tell me to come in if I had any concerns. Their reasoning was two-fold: my peace of mind and education about what symptoms I should be watching for/concerned about; as well as a baseline exam so they could have a basis for comparison if anything changed.

Poor pup to have such a vet with such a lackadaisical attitude.

I have several owners that made the same choice....went with the "professional opinion"..........They came to me for their new puppy when their other baby died. I worked with those two families extensively and fortunately they learned from their mistake. Unfortunately, two babies were lost.....and those "vets" that recommended the wait and see approach, did not contribute one thin dime to the ensuing medical bills for the dying babies, nor did they contribute anything toward the purchase of the new puppy.

Nope, I am not a professional. I am, however, a pre vet who has spent hundreds of hours in veterinary hospitals including ER. A licensed veterinarian (not a tech) needs to put their hands on this dog and auscultate the chest NOW (which cannot be done over the phone).

I certainly do pray that anyone reading this post and encountering this type of EMERGENT situation with their pup, will have the motivation to grab this baby up immediately, wrap him an a towel, and RUSH to a vet! I have been around animals all my life, and Yorkies for close to 40 years, and this event would scare the chittlins out of me.....this is NOT a "wait and see what happens next" situation....next time it happens, he may not recover.... Any vet that gets this explanation of an event and recommends that since he is "fine" now, just wait and see what happens, .....you need to find a new vet immediately!

IDThink you know the severity of this situation. Your baby needs to be seen by a vet asap. Anytime an off colored mucus (in this case foam, but it's still abnormal) comes out of their extremities, it can be a sign of infection...pneumonia can kill if left untreated, my Grandmother passed away from pneumonia. Please get this baby to the vet today, please...please.

I sincerely doubt that any vet's office would say "watch and wait" in this situation.

If it was YOU that was having these type of reactions to something, I bet you would have gone straight to a doctor! Why not the same for your furbaby!

Please stop accusing me of being a bad owner. as i always think of my dogs first. they are my children. i always go to the vet no matter how little the issue. this time i really didn't feel that it was necessary till this morning. and that's why i was asking for advice from YT. and i took your advice and was going to the vet and the vet said to wait. that they don't think it is an emergency and that they doubt that the comet had anything to do with it as he had to ingest it and inhale a large amount for it to cause problems. i told them that he is only 2.5lb. and they said the same thing. he is not out of my sight any little thing ill go to the vet. please know that i would never put my dog in any danger. if i would see that he is in paid or distress i will defiantly rush him in. I'm not going to let him out of my sight. i repeat i would never put my babies in in danger, please don't worry. i will keep updated with any new info
