Do all Yorkies build a nest at bedtime? Just curious if this is common or a quirk. Shelby always digs and builds a nest with whatever towel or blanket she is sleeping on once she's really ready to go to sleep. She may sleep in it or someplace else, but at least I know she's ready to go to bed. The digging is pretty cute! And we know she is actually ready to try to go to sleep, which is a relief at times. |
My two both build nests. It's pretty cute! |
lol! Is this a yorkie thing? I wasn't sure. My two both do it but Molli does it so much it's hilarious. She digs at the blankets for like 5 minutes! Maybe its a terrier thing. This would be an interesting poll to see |
Both my yorkies build a nest and so does our toy poodle. |
Sophie says guilty. |
Galen does too |
Max and Teddy do this too. I love watching them. They work so hard, often holding a corner of the blanket in their mouths, but they rarely accomplish anything in the way of changing the blanket. :) |
It's not a Yorkie thing, or a terrier thing, it's a dog thing. I've had or known many dogs of different breeds/mixes, and some do it but some don't. |
Zoey does too! I sometimes wonder if she's trying to tell me something like "jeez mom is THIS all you got!?" And it's like 5 different bankee's to choose from! Lol! |
Crystal enters this ritual most nights. There's a lot of 'bull-dozing' and furious burrowing. The whole routine ends very suddenly with a sit down, rather like kids playing musical chairs when the music stops. Sometimes I get an accompanying stare of disapproval (entirely unwarranted) and most times the entire sequence is supplemented with rigorous reverse snorting.;) |
Caleb and Pippi do it. Pippi's the worse, she sounds like she's going to rip the sheets up or couch at times. She burrows under the small duvets that I've made them, until just her head sticks out. It does look cute. Our larger dogs, have never dug like these two, but have all walked in circles first. |
Maggie does it more than Buster, she can be very picky about where she sleeps... |
chester does it |
all my yorkies (4) did it, my poodle, did not, Cody digs with a vengeance. |
My Ripley does not do it. Neither did my Presley. They just plop down. Though Ripley does lie to sleep above my head on my pillows. Presley always slept in the curve of my armpit or the back of my legs. |
Sissy does this. Sometimes she has trouble getting it just right and will have to rearrange everything till it is to her liking. Bubba, on the other hand, jumps into bed, puts his head on my pillow and starts snoring. I have to push him over to get the little piece of pillow that I am allowed. If I disturb him too much he grumbles. |

Tibbe is a nest-builder and works hard to nest almost every time he gets ready to go to sleep. He works just as hard to get a doggie blanket or an afghan, human blanket or duvet fixed just like he wants it, kind of built-up high at some point and that's usually where he likes to put his head. He doesn't seem to like to sleep on smooth surfaces and will dig at them until he thinks he's stirred up some nap or something, even if it's just in his mind. |
Both of mine dig. Coco digs while on the sofa, Rico digs in bed. |

I really look forward to her earnest endeavors.;) Its another part of the intrinsic charm bestowed within the box of togetherness, we open every day... |
Piper and Jilly do this. Someone told me they are putting their scent on the area. Who knows? But they do work hard:) |
2 Attachment(s) Huey likes to nest, too. He will scrape at my arm to lift the covers, then once under the covers, digs like a maniac for a few minutes. Last night he was so tired, he just climbed under the covers on his own and promptly went to sleep where he landed. He did burrow deeper after I took a picture:D 1st pic is his face, 2nd pic nothing but an ear! |
Our last girl used to dig/nuzzle/bite/pull for some time, then suddenly stop, look up, walk a few steps away from where she was building her nest and collapse. It was hilarious to watch. |
My Belle is almost 2 years old and has been digging her bed since she was 3 or 4 months old. She also buries her food and covers it with invisible dirt. It's so cute to see their natural instincts kick in. |
I've never known a dog that didn't do it! Paw, dig, teeth, pull and lots of turning around until finally they plop down. |
I've got one who furiously digs and nests at bedtime (P-Nut) while the other either watches and acts like he's nuts, or ignores him. Being a first-time dog owner, I had no idea what P-Nut was doing when he first started nesting as a pup, I thought he'd lost his marbles! :D |
Add Billi to the list. It's funny tho, she'll even dig at pillows, the couch, the carpet... Not just blankets. One of these days, she'll get to China! |
Gracie only does this with certain blankets. I have a couple blankets that I took out of their storage bags in my bedroom closet. If I do not latch the closet door she will open the door, drag her favorite blanket out and arrange it just as she likes it. Eventually she will lay down and take a nap on it. She has her own blanket on the bed which she rearranges occasionally but not every night. It does make you wonder what they think they are accomplishing with all the activity. |
Buster is a nester as well. I love watching him as he takes his work very seriously. it does look pretty cozy when he finishes. |
Pao digs at his cashmere blanket which I made out of cashmere cardigans that I found at the thrift store. He loves that blanket and will only sleep on it but he needs to dig it until it is a certain way that he likes  |
