I'm new and having Yorkie puppy problems!!! Hello everyone, so I have had Jax since he was 8 weeks, he is now 16 weeks and I started noticing that he was eating his poop, I immediately took him to the vet cause I had never seen that. The vet gave me some powder to put in his food and I did that but he still eats he continued to eat his poop. He was eating Royal Canin before, but I started noticing that he was crying when he was pooping. When I took him in for his set of shots I told the vet and he told me to switch up his food to give him more proteins. Since we have a pitbull puppy so we started giving Jax, Hero (the pitbulls) food because its Blue and it has a lot of good nutritional facts as well as being high in protein. He is still crying when he poops and eating it. My next appointment with the vet is at the end of the week but I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be most helpful. |
Hello :wavey: and :welcome4: to YT. "Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I recommend."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book. These are excellent resource books. And we have a great amount of info here. It sound like he is constipated I would suggest to put plain canned pumpkin ( not pumpkin pie mix) in his food. Also it should help with the poop eating. If it doesn't help with the poop eating then give him a little pineapple. Good luck |

About the poop eating issue, changing the dog food might help, but I don't know whether food that's right for a pit bull is good for a Yorkie puppy--other people will chime in on that, I'm sure. I would try to keep an eye on Jax when he poops, immediately remove the poop after he finishes so he can't eat it, and then praise him and give him a treat for not eating the poop. |

Is his poop hard? If it is maybe adding some wet dog food would help. |
Initially I had the same thought about the puppy food. He didn't want to eat the breed specific food, he would just sniff it and walk away. I tried to let him come around and eat his food at his own time, but even then he would only take a few nibbles. When we had researched Hero's food, there were so many pros to it and now Jax eats his whole bowl of food. I'm still researching different puppy foods. I would be happy to hear any suggestions. |
Sometimes, this morning it was hard. The colorations and smells are fine, I've been monitoring that and haven't noticed anything in particular. He is wimpers and once he's done he goes right back to playing. This morning it was a louder cry though. |

Constipation is the worst for dogs (and humans) alike. The problem seems to be even more compounded (literally) for the smaller breeds of dog. That said you could try mixing some canned and dry. For now I'm feeding Darla canned and dry Puppy Plate by Merrick mixed together. The canned foot will help to soften the stool for your little man. Also sweet potato has similarities to pumpkin with regards to the digestive track. So I'd look for a food that has sweet potato advertised as a main ingredient. We feed our German Shepherd the Merrick buffalo and sweet potato formula. If all else fails you can cook your own food. Grandma Lucy's artisan dog food is my utmost favorite food to feed. I'll end up switching Darla to that when she's not a puppy anymore. It has the smallest list of ingredients I've ever seen. They also make a pre-mix of vegetables and nutrients for dogs that you just add meat to and feed. So if you want to cook for little Jax, that's a good option. |
when my keylo was having issues my vet suggested mineral oil which worked wonders for us. just incase you wanted to check with your vet about giving mineral oil. best wishes hope the lil guy gets better real soon. my keylo is still a poop eater. we just work really hard to catch her doing each poop and remove them immediately. |
I've never had a puppy that young so I don't know if they cry when they have hard stools. What does the vet say is the cause for pain with passing a stool? That sure doesn't sound normal, crying from a hard stool. Did he examine the rectum to be sure there is no constriction around it or a partial blockage of some type? If not, I'd get him to check his rear end out. |

Gizmo was eating his poop and I switched him to Stella & Chewy and he no longer eats it. However, when I'm not home it's like he wants to eat it but doesn't like it cuz I will find pieces in the dining room and restroom. I guess playing with it is better than eating it. :D |
