Never done this before... So I've noticed Coco has been scooting on her rear. Just from looking back at previous threads, it usually means she needs her anal glands expressed, right? So does this hurt them in any way? I made a call to take her in tomorrow morning, but I don't want it to hurt her. Anyone have any experiences they can share to put my mind at ease? I just feel bad because if someone were to squeeze my rear I think it would hurt. |
Don't worry - they don't mind at all! Both of mine have had it done, and they haven't complained about it ;). I think they probably feel relieved afterwards! Good luck to Coco!! |
It always makes them feel better...I guess I would if I had stuff pluggin up my butt! :D Anyway, not to get off topic...but for anyone else out there, if you've not ever had experience in doing this, do not attempt it on your own...you can injure your dog. Anyway Nobella, CoCo will be and do just fine. I'd give her a bath, though afterwards...some of that stuff may get on her hair...YUCKERS!!!!! |
my scrappy had his done once he just wimpered a little then he was ok .it stinks though.couldnt be in same room when they did it hubby went in the room and he said he he was a trooper but also said it stunk. |
Oh she's going to be so happy when she gets back. Yes, a bath is a must! I know there was a thread on how to do it. But its better to take them in, always stay on the safe side. :) I'm sure Coco will do great! :D |
Magic has had her's done once...it wasn't that painful for her. She did great and felt so much better afterwards!! I am sure Coco will do great.... |

Orange???? More like a PIMPLE!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!! |
Sometimes they do it on their own when they push hard the next time they go potty...if it persists' i'd schedule an appt with your vet ;) |
As far as hurting - this can vary and may also depend on how full the anal glands are. It has always hurt my dogs to have their anal glands expressed. But, your dog is already uncomfortable if he is scooting around the floor. And - if anal glands need expressing and it isn't done - they get worse and more painful as it worsens -- often leading to infection and more serious problems. When I have it done at the vet's office - she is quick and she also injects medication to prevent other problems. It needs to be done. It's kind of like going to the dentist - we may not like to go - but we need to go. Take your puppy to the vet and think of the discomfort and possible problems you will be keeping her from having in the future. And -- and she may not experience much discomfort after all. Good luck! you had me cracking up in my office.. nobella , gotta tell ya , you are a funny person.. |

I'm taking her to the groomers to get it done tomorrow morning. Thanks for the links! |
Anal Glands My groomer does the anal glads when the kids get groomed. Ask your groomer if he/she will do it. |
I'm nervous for her..lol..I don't know why. It sounds like she'll be better off after, but if I hear a single sound out of her, I will go nuts...lol..so if I don't come on to YT after tomorrow, I've been arrested for assaulting a groomer who's fingers were in my babies butt. |
