Your groomer should be able to express his anal glands though. I can tell you from experience, after doing MANY dogs, SMALL and LARGE (ick!), at my old grooming job, I have never seen any of them show any sign of discomfort. Just confusion..."Why are you touching my butt?!!?"... then disgust after sniffing it "OMG what did you do! that smells awful!". Most dogs dont like you being around their private areas, dont blame them though. I must admit its pretty funny to see the look on their face and how it changes. :D |

There are two methods: internal and external There are two sacs inside the anus, in the 9 oclock and 3 oclock position. When they are full, you can feel them. The external method is when you squeeze the sacs upwards with your fingers to express them. You usually use a paper towel, so it doesnt squirt everywhere  Sorry, its kind of hard to explain. The internal method, using gloves of course, is where you find the sacs inside the anus using one finger (usually index) and one finger on the outside (thumb), and express. The internal method has been known to get the most secretion out. The reason why everyone says to let your Vet or groomer do this is because if you arent careful, you can squeeze too hard/much. You can ask your Vet to teach you. The only time I could see that this would be painful is if it is infected, which in that case a vet should be seen. |
