Biewer Terrier recognized as a developing breed by the AKC. I just received the following breaking news from the Facebook feed of the president of the Biewer Terrier Club of America (BTCA): "DURING THE APRIL BOARD MEETING THE AKC VOTED TO RECOGNIZE THE PUREBRED BIEWER TERRIER AND ACCEPT THEM INTO THE FSS (FOUNDATION STOCK SERVICE PROGRAM) AS A DEVELOPING BREED WITHIN THE AKC." I'm not sure when Biewers will be able to be fully registered with the AKC, but this is exciting news for a breed of dog that has been on the sidelines for a while, as far as AKC recognition goes. |
It's time they were recognized as a separate breed. |
Encouraging news indeed! |
Awesome! |
Thank you for the update |
Sorry to inform you, I just got off the phone with a customer service representative of AKC and I was informed that the Biewer breed was not a topic of the April board meeting and there were no acceptance of a new breed under the FSS program... where did you see this information? just curious? The customer service rep also went above and beyond to contact the FSS department and they conquer that no news were mentioned about this acceptance... any thoughts !!! I would really hope the Biewers are accepted... Thanks :) |
OP said he where his info came from. It's pretty common in large organizations for any department not to know everything in the works within its scope or if the movement is in its nascency - hope this happens in the next few years for the good of both breeds. |

Here's the announcement. I'm not sure whether you need a Facebook account to view it: https://www.facebook.com/jonathan.da...29495437144864 [edit] I was able to log out of Facebook, and I could still view the post. |
I certainly hope it was an oversite by customer service rep. I am cheering for this breed to make the AKC, it's well deserved... I will like the post from facebook so that I can be informed of the latest information as well... Thank you again :) |

Great... I am certain the AKC will update their website soon. This is a big announcement for the Biewer breed... so I guess there will be a BiewerTalk.com... I already have a patent on the idea :) :) :) Thanks again |

This is big news on many fronts for biewer breeders especially because some clubs recognize them as Yorkies and some as a separate breed. It would force them to come together which would be a good thing |
Wow, this is great news, I really hope it true, I always thought it would happen, but didn't realize it would happen so fast. The Biewer breeders must have been really good at keep accurate records. |
my breeder posted this on FB today (she breeds yorkies and biewers and is the Vice President of the BTCA) |
IT IS IN FACT TRUE: The AKC's FSS Accepted the Biewer Terrier Yes, it is true. The Biewer Terrier has been accepted into FSS program by the AKC. The AKC board voted in the April board meeting to accept them under the breed name of Biewer Terrier and the only registrations they will be accepting are BTRA, Biewer Terrier Registration of America. It will be posted in the April minutes at the end of next week. |
This makes so very important to check the bonafides of the breeder you select. Make sure before laying down big bucks that your baby biewer terrier has been properly DNA tested to ensure it's purebred. I love my biewer terrier! Tracey And rock on & mega thanks to the BTCA for making this happen! |
Is this not a good thing for the 2 other Biewer groups? |

Some groups ( and I'm not singling out anybody) felt it was healthier to breed in a yorkie every so often. They still called their dogs biewers. They won't be able to do that any more. Some groups have stopped the mixing but their foundation stock may not be pure either. They stand to lose big bucks by losing the biewer name. They call their dogs a "breed" & not a "terrier". It may be a little misleading to continue to do that. So will everybody be friends & play nice now? Don't know. If you want a biewer terrier though, I'd lean toward a BTRA registered litter to ensure you have a purebred. Just my opinion. Tracey |

If you search this sight you'll find heated discussions about this issue. I always wondered why some fought so hard against DNA testing. Well now we'll all get the answers one way or another. |

(Where did you hear that BBIR dogs aren't DNA'd? They certainly are.) Please search on here re the validity of Mars Testing. |

That's just what I have read. There can always be non-akc registered biewers. Just as there are non registered yorkies. Were I to pay primo bucks for one though, I'd want a FSS litter - just like I prefer to have an akc registered Yorkie. Tracey |
This is very exciting news!! |

And the Biewer is a beautiful dog! Tracey |
That's great!! Reminds me of the stuff going on w/ Mini Aussies now. They're now AKC accepted but they're called Mini American Shepherds. But some don't want to seperate into a new breed, they just want a size variation of an Aussie... it's crazy... lol |
Yaaayyy!!! It's official!!!!! 1 Attachment(s) I received an email from the Director of the AKC FSS program confirming that Biewer Terriers have indeed been accepted into the FSS program! |
