Bless my boyfriend's poor ignorant heart! ♡ 1 Attachment(s) Hi! New to your forum! I discovered it due to my bf surprising me with a beautiful yorkie female, named Bella (soooooo not original I know). After reading a few posts, I realize that she is much too young right? She's only 9 weeks according to her shot records. Giving her back isn't an option (my heart is hers completely). I have already booked her puppy wellness visit with my vet. My gosh she is soooooo tiny yet full of spunk! She has already had my much bigger spaniel jumping for higher ground due to her chasing him around. She also kept me up a bit with her whining after crating her overnight. I'm so happy I work from home because potty training her at such a young age is going to take a lot of patience and time (pads are not an option right now). I've had mixed yorkie pups before but never a purebred. I'm happy to be a new mommy yet so nervous! |
Hello, welcome to YorkieTalk! Bella is a little cutie pie :) |
welcome to YT and congrats on your new lil furbaby Bella. Yorkies are a high energy breed no matter how young or small they may be. Zooming around the house jumping, leaping is a yorkie thing. Your spaniel is safe on higher grounds for now until lil Bella learns how to jump. What a sweet BF to give a you such beautiful gift. Good luck |
Thank you for the warm welcome! I'll let my older baby know he's safe for only a little while! Any tips or advice I need to know? Anything you can share is much appreciated! ♡ Is it ok that the top of her head is mostly brown already? |
welcome to yt and congrats on bella. |

Welcome to YT! She is a little ball of sweetness! At 9 weeks old the advice I offer you I hope you take. Never ever leave this pup alone for atleast 3 weeks. She is tiny? How much does she weigh? First off my concern is that your breeder is unethical. A reputable breeder does not let a pup so young go this early you need to monitor this pup closely and watch for symptoms of Hypoglycemia and also for Coccidia which is common within BYB and other unethical breeders. Any change in your pup needs to be taken seriously and a trip to the vet immediate. Young small pups like these can go down hill very fast. Did you get a health guarantee? I would link you here but honestly the best thing you can do is read as much as you can here and especially the "STICKIES" - THE LOCKED THREADS AT THE TOP OF EVERY FORUM, honestly read and reread and do NOT be afraid to ask any question. You will get honest and blunt answers because we at YT value the lives of all pups! Good Luck and keep an eye on this pup, relax but be aware! |
Thanks! That's why I titled my thread as such! His intentions were good but he doesn't know anything about Yorkies! All he knows is that I've expressed interest in having one. I left a message for this so called breeder but no response so far. I'll let you know her weight once she has her visit. So far she's eating and playing but I'm worried about the hypoglycemic issue. I'm careful not to play with her much and let her get her rest as much as possible. Until her appointment, I'm going to be on pins and needles! Words can't explain how tiny she is! |
There are two books that I recommend to all my new owners...."Yorkies For Dummies" is the first and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second. These two books will get you very well informed about Yorkies, and teach you enough to keep your baby safe! Please get them and start reading! |
Thank you so much for the book recommendations! I'm looking to see if they are available on amazon or Apple add downloads right now! I did speak with my bf after looking over her shot record that she came with and he became a bit defensive. Guess he thought he was being ungrateful. I told him I was grateful for his thoughtful thoughtlessness! Lol. I'm happy I found this site!♡♡♡ |

Welome to yorkie talk! Bella is a beauty :yorkieg:  |
Oh my. Your story is scary and now I'm more scared than ever! |
Awww, welcome home Bella! I brought my Jackson home at 9 weeks and all was well. He WAS a bigger boy though -- he was already 5lbs at that point, LOL... so I know the tinier ones can be a bit more high maintenance. But I'm sure all will be fine. :) Best wishes!! :) |
I got my very first yorkie (25 years ago) at 8 weeks of age from a pet store....you can't get much worse than that lol. But she did fine and turned out to be an amazing dog. While I wouldn't suggest anyone get a yorkie that young it is and can be done successfully......like others have said, just keep an eye on her for any hypoglycemia issues. Don't let her jump off of the couch, bed etc because she could hurt her legs (my first girl jumped off my very low bed onto a carpeted floor and sprained her leg). Don't take her to pet stores or anywhere else she could pick up an illness until she is bigger and finished her shots. Most of all enjoy that little cutie :) |
Hi and welcome!! She sure is a cutie. Everyone on here will help you with great info. Always feel free to ask any questions. |
Welcome. I got Gizmo when he was 8 weeks. I stayed home with him for two weeks. Even though they need to stay with their mom until at least 12 weeks, he is a great dog and a fast learner. Not knowing any better, I split his crate into his bed and his restroom. I put his blanket on one side and his pee pad on the other. He took to the pee pad instantly and never went on his blanket. Did I mention he's very smart. He didn't eat very much the first few days so I had to hand feed him which I still have to once in a while. He will look at me and his food then back at me as if he's saying "hello, do you expect me to eat by myself". LOL! :D |
Thank you all for the words of encouragement. I did get a hold of the lady who sold my bf the dog. She told me that she doesn't consider herself a breeder but that her two Yorkies did mate. This was her first litter of which only 3 were born. She also told me due to her not being a professional, she kept one of the puppies, gave the other to her mom and my bf was actually referred to her by his coworker who is her son. She did warn me about hypoglycemia and other things and said she was open to me to come visit the parents. Due to this not being a intentional mating, my baby was only sold for 150.00 and she don't plan on mating them in the future due to her own lack of knowledge for breeding. We'll see. |

I know right! Lmao! It's ok because the love she gives will be priceless! |
Hi welcome to Yorkietalk... Your boyfriend may not have known she was a little too young, but he seems like a sweetheart. My guy would never get me a puppy. LOL He has warmed up to Charlie over the years, but he wasn't raised to really respect animals (sad I know)... But I think I am turning that around... I know pets shouldn't be treated as "gifts" but he looks like he found his self a good mama anyway.. You'll find all the information you need on these sweet little dogs here, for sure. :) |
I think 8 weeks is pretty standard for larger breeds, but yeah, 9 weeks is a little young for yorkies. Just make sure to have some Nutrical, as it really gets them to eat when they want to skip breakfast, which you want them to never do before they get some size on their bodies. Gums should always be nice and pink. If they start looking pale it's a very bad thing and they're getting hypoglycemic. At that point you're looking at giving some Karo syrup and a rush to the vet/ER, like mentioned above. Good luck with your baby. Only thing more fun than a yorkie puppy is when they're full-grown and can go all day! |
Make sure to give completely over the top praise for successful bathroom trips. Right now your pup is probably too young to be outdoors. Probably good to wait until at least the third round of shots before taking her outside, as getting parvo would be really nasty. |
Jack was only 1.25 pounds when I brought him home - he was 9 or 10 weeks old and I did not find this site until after I purchased him. I learned so much from here - just keep reading the posts and as long as you know what symptoms to look for regarding hypoglycemia, you should be okay. Enjoy little Bella, she is a doll baby! |
4 Attachment(s) I'm having a ball with Bella! Potty training is going great! No accidents so far and she adores my son! I'm kinda jealous! |

"Your Yorkshire Terrier - Month-By-Month" is co-authored by two vets, Liz Palika and Deb Eldredge, AND by two breeders - Preston and Marylou Groves. Along with all the advice I've gotten from Susan (Shelby's breeder at Clover Hill Yorkies), Yorkietalk, and Shelby's vet - I've found this book to be very useful as Shelby grows up - there's a different chapter for each month of the first year (months 1 & 2 are in one chapter). Covers vet, training, grooming, behavior, growth milestones, whatever you can think of). Thought I'd bring it up - it doesn't seem to be well known here yet. |
4 months is generally the perfect time to separate a pup from their mom. Both our yorkie Chiquis and our Malinois/Labrador litters generally stay with their mom and dad until that age. We were surprised to find out that dads are generally too lax with pups compared to moms, so the laters are the ones who end up teaching them manners for both indoors and outdoors interaction with humans and other dogs. Our second lab (now 10 yo) was too tiny when my dad brought her home, but other than her being more protecticve of our home (she's as good, if not better than our young yorkie when it comes to detecting nearby strangers with just her hearing&nose), she turned out to be very obedient and an excellent mom. |
The best advice lots of time, patience and most of all lots of love and kisses. Good luck Bella is precious |
It's been almost a year since Bella joined my family! She hasn't has any health issues or accidents! She's fully house trained and she's one tough cookie! |
