Pooping mess, still not better I posted a thread about this like a week ago or so regarding London. We've been to the vet a couple times and still don't know what's up. She has colitis but what is causing it is the question. She's already lost 2 lbs and she's tiny so that's a lot for her. She used to be a chubby muffin, now she's skinny and I'm scared. They spent 2 nights at the vet and they hydrated her and watched her. They said she didn't throw up so that was good and her poops seemed to be going back to normal but then they sent her home with another round of metronidazole and I don't see it working. She eats like a bird now, it's so hard to get her to eat, if he wants anything at all. and tries to poop every 5 minutes but all comes out are tiny pieces or drops of poop, no big solid normal chunks :( I don't know what to do! They did x rays, blood work.. All came out normal . I was worried it was cancer or something cuz of the weight loss but they said her blood results / enzymes came back normal so idk what to do!! She's really really little so I'm worried sick that she doesn't want to eat. :..( she's 7 years old btw, please help me.. I have no idea what it could be. And she really doesn't get into anything so I don't think she ate anything. She's really picky |
Have the put her on something to stop the pooping, like Kaopectin? Also, if she hasn't been to a GI or internist specialist, I would get her to one. It doesn't sound as if your vets know what is wrong. |

Be careful with that Met, especially if its in powder form, its a nasty carcinogen, don't inhale the dust. Is the Vet treating for parasites? |
IMO, get a second opinion immediately. Probably need to do exploratory and biopsy. |
I am originally from NY,if you live in one of the 5 Boro's the ASPCA on 86th St. East River Drive have the finest vets and internist specialists... Colitis... does the diarrhea have mucus and blood in it? With meds it should clear up in one to two weeks. I just went through a bout of what I thought was Colitis (diarrhea with blood and mucus in it ) It turned out to be rectal stricture, and required surgery.(symptoms were the same as Colitis) Your concern should not be where it came from, or how it's gotten, concern should be in getting it cured. If you are not satisfied with the vet you are using and live in one of the 5 boro's try the ASPCA.... Your last post, did you write the poop was stringy? |
If it's colitis, she could be intolerant of her food (i.e. protein). My Princess is intolerant of beef, it triggers her colitis. Grain free food is best for dogs w/colitis. Has giardia, whipworms or hookworms been ruled out? Panacur is good for the latter 2. I agree w/others, maybe a 2nd opinion is needed..not sure why met was prescribed for colitis (unless vet suspects giardia?). |

Like Ellie May mentioned, 2nd opinion, an internal specialist will be best the route IMO. |
Met will kill appetite, not eating is a possible side effect of met on top of her already not eating. I'm no Vet but if no parasites, why the met, if you go back to this Vet, ask what the met is for and what its supposed to do. Might PO him but I would ask |

This could be a very serious illness that left untreated could kill her!! |
I'm also wondering if she's ever had a reaction to chicken in the past ? My Gizmo is allergic to chicken, and having the runs is always the first sign when he has an allergy to something. sometimes they can develop n allergy later in life that they did not have previously just like people. Maybe try feeding something that is chicken free and see if that helps. I would also see an internist as well o get a second opinion. |
London is still not better :( I'm afraid she's going to pass away, been crying and trying to cope at the same time. We finished the metronidazole and she was still eating ok but still diarrhea. We took her to the vet for blood work and made an appointment for an ultrasound which is today. Over night she started throwing up as well as blood/liquid stool so we went to the e.r. They hydrated her and gave her anti nausea. Now we are back at the vet for the ultrasound but she almost didn't make it last night. Her bloodworm came back normal just so confused, I wish I knew what she has! She even started to hide in unusual places in my house as I heard some dogs do when they know they are going to die. I feel so sick to my stomach right now. Right now she is with the vet, they put a catheter in her. She's been so weak and lethargic, it's been a rough night :( |
Meant to say blood work* came back normal. Her previous blood work though the globulin was high and albumin low |

God bless this tiny, poor, unfortunate soul.....if this was my baby, I would have seen another vet, a specialist, after the first 3 days....the vet this baby is seeing does not have an answer for what is going on, and this darling can not possibly survive if she continues down this same course. Good luck to you....will be praying for London....please consider a specialist....I would be at a vet school if I had not seen some kind of diagnosis and effective treatment within 3 days....these babies can not just hang on, not eating, diarrhea, vomiting, bloody stools, weight loss of 2 lbs...... |

Take some deep breaths, get on the phone, and find out where the specialists are -- bc if that ultrasound doesn't show anything, you'll need to get her to a specialist ASAP! |

She is in 'icu' now I think that's what it's called, her glucose came back low which make sense because she has been throwin up and diarrhea. So they're giving her fluids, glucose and potassium and the ultrasound. I am beyond myself, just keep thinking about her in pain. She's a very quiet dog too and won't cry out or whine. She's very calm, always been such a good baby. Someone mentioned I should go to another vet, we did go see another vet.. But it's also hard going back and forth. They did bloodwork already twice at this place and the X-ray and now the ultrasound. We are also trying to switch doctors because one was recommended by this lady in the waiting room. He's at the same vet hospital but she highly recommended him, so we spoke to him. I feel iffy about her current doctor.. she was nice just a little off, very rough handed which I did not like, as London is 3 lbs or so now :( and she's so weak. |
