Chester has lp
 
I took chester to the vet on tuesday, after he had problems with his leg the other day. He now has luxating patella in both knees a grade 1 to 2, he has never had problems but since he is getting older. I also got his heartworm test done which was negative. The vet suggested revolution since I do flea control when Im out and about on road trips during the summer. I recently started chester on opaws advanced mobility which has alot of stuff in for there joints and has worked very well on dogs. I had this getting older stuff thats for sure

Hoping the supplement helps him. Did he show any limping or is this something your vet picked up on?

A grade 1-2 is no big deal. My girl is almost 4 and has a grade IV and she's running around like a wild child. I think it's great you at protecting chester from HW!!

our sixth-month-old baby was diagnosed with lp, grade 2/3 on the right and 2 on the left Saturday evening. Yes, we went to the emergency vet when her leg started going out on her.

I have an appointment to see our regular vet on Monday, so is there anything special I should know? I know this is common, but she is so young. . .

My Spud was diagnosed with the leg problems and the vet wanted to operate and we said no. So we put him on Dasuquin and he is doing fine. No problems with his legs.

make sure they dont jump alot which is hard if they are a puppy, Im doing opaws advanced mobility on him as well, sometimes they can grow out of it my friends dog did, after a few months he dont have it anymore. I would never do surgery unless my dog was suffering chester isnt thats for sure, just that one time he held up his leg and then he is fine

Thanks for the advice. We may have a more difficult situation, because it gives way on her and she falls. She just gets up and moves on, but it scares us. We have steps to the sofa, but she doesn't quite see the need to use them to get down. Working on it, though. . .

I will try to delay the repair if that is prudent, but I don't want her to develop arthritis (I know how that can ruin a day!). She is just turning into such a sweetheart-not perfect, but incredibly lovable. :) She is just so good with our grandson, and he loves her so much, that I would hate for her discomfort to make it hard for them to be together. Yes, we watch them very carefully when he is with her, and he has learned how to carry her safely, but I don't want him to hurt her inadvertently. Neither of them would understand.

Since the dog is experiencing trouble walking, now is probably the time to consider surgery, before the LP gets worse, or before arthritis develops. The longer you wait, the more difficult the recovery will be. You should get a referral to an orthopedic specialist, just to be sure. If you do decide on surgery, you will have to be extra careful with your grandson's involvement because the dog will need to be crated and take it easy for the two weeks until stitches come out, and for some time afterward during the rehabilitation. The dog will probably have to wear an E-collar until the stitches come out to keep her from pulling and licking at them. Since she is young, she will probably recover quickly.

I have already checked to see how many veterinary orthopedic surgeons are in the area. If she does have to have surgery, we will plan it for a time when we are not visiting small people or having them with us! Is she too young for the surgery, though? I tried googling it, but I couldn't get any good information.

Our Bella was operated on at one year of age, about a month after she started experiencing severe symptoms, and she did great! However, I would consult with a vet about the best age for surgery. The articles that I have read indicate that irreversible changes leading to arthritis and bone damage can occur if severe luxating patella goes untreated for 1 or 2 years.

That helps. I understand that this is not an emergency, but I certainly don't want our cutie to have lifelong pain because we have not been proactive. The one-year timeline makes me feel better about waiting a while to give her time ot grow a little more. She is already scheduled for spaying in two weeks, and so contemplating another surgery is a bit much now!

I wouldn't wait a whole year, but 6 months might be okay, providing that the symptoms don't worsen. Ask the vet about the best timing for LP surgery when you go in for the spay in two weeks.

We will talk about it on Monday. I suspect that I will have enough questions about it for a whole visit. :)
I just want to know which questions to ask. When our first yorkie was diagnosed she was an older dog, I didn't have YorkieTalk, and I was busy with keeping three kids healthy. I just nodded my head and hoped for the best. It was never a major concern. Gracie is the classic only child/dog!

We saw our vet today and are scheduled to see the board certified surgeon tomorrow morning. Thanks for all of the good advice. Don't know for sure, but they may be able to do that and the spay together and spare Gracie anesthesia the second time. That would make me happy.
