Too much hair! Do you trim around feet? 1 Attachment(s) Gunner has so much coat. How do you trim them. I want to keep his coat for now, but the hair around his feet is turning under when he walks. Do you trim around the feet? I know to do the hair on his pads. I know it is a terrible photo, I used my phone. |
Gunner is precious!!! I keep my girls' feet clipped short, but then again, how else am I going to polish those toenails!?! |
I have the hair on Busters pads trimmed every time he is groomed. http://www.animalbehaviorcollege.com...kpeeksage4.pdf Gunner is very handsome! |
Yes the hair on my girls feet are kept rounded. |
Gunner is adorable! Great link, Carolyn. I trim the leg hair that hangs around the paw short enough so that it cannot wrap under the paw. Then I use a small trimmer to shave carefully in between the pads. Max and Teddy's paw hair has increased with age, so it requires weekly trimming. |

You can do it 2 ways: you can either cut from the topside, or if he is fidgety and you are unsure, you can wrap your fingers around the leg close to the foot, holding the hair in place. Then, bend his leg so that you are looking down on the paw pads, and trim around the edges. |

The only good grooming videos for full coat Yorkies that I have heard of are by one of the top Yorkie show handlers. They are $$$. I decided I do a good enough job for my pets, learning through trial and error. When Max was a pup, I shaved his feet! Then I decided I didn't like that look on him. Seemed to take forever to grow out. |
I trim around Yoda's feet, trim his nails, and trim the hair between his paws. We both get better at it every time - I get better at making it look nice, and he gets better at letting me do it. Just did it over the weekend, and it's not bad! |
Thanks all. I am going to try again tomorrow. Maximo, one day soon I will have to order some grooming spray from you. We've been on a bit of a budget lately, lots of things falling apart in the home that need to be fixed. I ordered some whitening shampoo from Amazon, completely useless. I had Isle of Dog but I ran out. I wish there were something that make his coat change from cotton to silk! Or at least make it lay down nicely? I wanted to get a buddy belt too, but my hands cannot buckle or do anything small, my fingers hurt too much. So, I have to find something without clasps or buckles for him. |

I now leave it to my groomer. I went to shave between the pads but my tiny shaver was not working so I used one to big and ended up making her paw bleed. She got spoiled a lot and doesn't seem to be scarred for life but I am! |

Here are some links: In both videos there is a part dedicated to the paws trimming. :) |

I don't trim around the feet at all, I like them natural. |

If it's really bad, I give them a little "paw bath". Get a cup half cup of water and stick their paws in there for good rinse. |

I trimmed around his paws, but they still are plenty "poofy". I watched the vids, same thing I did with Gunner, just not as short. I did make a big OOPS. I was taking out his top knot and I thought I just had band in the special scissors, but I cut a huge hunk of hair. Not sure how I did that, but my hands and eyes are not always my friend. |

I use the second method mentioned, only I lay Kyra on her back and gather her leg hair at the paw and trim it in a circle. If I don't her paws get mats in them. |

The easiest way to trim paw hair is keep their paw on the table, keep your scissors vertical, on the table & trim around. Another way is to comb out the hair sideways & trim. Gunner is gorgeous...so much hair, he has great hair genes!:D |

I have a really nice set of small round tipped scissors that I trim Gracie's feet with. She is used to having it done since she has been groomed regularly since she was a pup. I trim the long hair around the paw first and then do the under part. If your pup isn't used to being groomed it is a good idea to have someone help you when you are doing delicate areas of the body but the more you teach your dog to accept grooming the easier it will get. Always end with a treat. Gracie only goes to the groomer once every 4 or 5 months so I keep her feet and other areas trimmed up in between visits. This spring I will have her long hair cut down to just where her belly is. Last year it was grown back to almost floor length by early winter. I guess it doesn't take long when they are on the short side.;) |
I just looked at the video above. Gracie gets a cut much like that in the summer only her body length starts out a little shorter. |
After having his harness on him at our campground community I think I have come to the realization that all his hair will need to come off soon. It is still too cold, and I love his long, thick hair, but it is too cottony and his harness mats his hair up as soon as I put it on. For the past 3 nights it has taken me an hour to pick out the mats that are left by the harness. :( |
