I don't trim around the feet at all, I like them natural.

How do you clean them after walks? Especially after it rained/snowed. Doesn't dirt/mud get caked onto fur on their paws?

If it's really bad, I give them a little "paw bath". Get a cup half cup of water and stick their paws in there for good rinse.

We don't have snow here, and very very little rain (it's the high desert). It's just dry - so nothing more than some dusty dirt may get in their paws, which just comes off naturally. The only downside is if something tangly gets caught in there, you just have to work it out a bit. But other than that, they don't require anything extra. I really love how their natural paws look with a 'poof' at the end, too cute!

I trimmed around his paws, but they still are plenty "poofy". I watched the vids, same thing I did with Gunner, just not as short. I did make a big OOPS. I was taking out his top knot and I thought I just had band in the special scissors, but I cut a huge hunk of hair. Not sure how I did that, but my hands and eyes are not always my friend.

So you don't trim the hair between their pads as well? I'm trying to picture their little feet looking "natural" but my imagination just sucks... Can you post a picture of your little guy's feet? I'm curious now.. LOL

I use the second method mentioned, only I lay Kyra on her back and gather her leg hair at the paw and trim it in a circle. If I don't her paws get mats in them.

I pull the band away from the hair so the hair doesn't get snipped off.

The easiest way to trim paw hair is keep their paw on the table, keep your scissors vertical, on the table & trim around. Another way is to comb out the hair sideways & trim.

Gunner is gorgeous...so much hair, he has great hair genes!:D

No, I don't trim anything on their feet at all and they stay really nice. I'm out of town until Saturday but after that I'll take some piccies of some au natural feetz and post them. :)

I have a really nice set of small round tipped scissors that I trim Gracie's feet with. She is used to having it done since she has been groomed regularly since she was a pup. I trim the long hair around the paw first and then do the under part.

If your pup isn't used to being groomed it is a good idea to have someone help you when you are doing delicate areas of the body but the more you teach your dog to accept grooming the easier it will get. Always end with a treat.

Gracie only goes to the groomer once every 4 or 5 months so I keep her feet and other areas trimmed up in between visits.

This spring I will have her long hair cut down to just where her belly is. Last year it was grown back to almost floor length by early winter. I guess it doesn't take long when they are on the short side.;)

I just looked at the video above. Gracie gets a cut much like that in the summer only her body length starts out a little shorter.

After having his harness on him at our campground community I think I have come to the realization that all his hair will need to come off soon. It is still too cold, and I love his long, thick hair, but it is too cottony and his harness mats his hair up as soon as I put it on. For the past 3 nights it has taken me an hour to pick out the mats that are left by the harness. :(

He may be more comfortable with his hair trimmed down in the summer but until the hair cut try giving him a bath and using a good dose of conditioner and then spray his coat down with a good conditioning spray and use it daily. It will help keep his hair more slippery so it won\'t tangle around the harness quite so easily. You just want to use a conditioning spray that isn\'t too heavy but keeps a good shine and slip to the coat.
