Heat panties... Where to buy? And how heavy does heat usually get? Chloe is approaching 6 months so I think I need to prepare and buy some panties for her. Any websites that have cute, comfortable panties for her? Also, how heavy does the heat get.. Is it a noticeable amount of blood that she would need panties or can she just walk around (in the house) without any? |

Why isn't she being spayed? |

My family has had many spayed dogs, they were all free fed dry food and given wet for dinner. Only one has a weight problem and that's because she's fed WAY too many treats. My aunt has/had 2 unspayed dogs, both had mammory tumors and were a bit chunky, again too many treats. I just spayed Lola, she's a year old. I waited because she went into heat sooner than expected and she needed to gain some weight. She was also microchipped, had a few baby teeth pulled, and given a mini teeth cleaning. Lola bled for a few weeks but it wasn't too bad, I just covered the furniture with blankets. I bought panties for her at petsmart, she only wore them when we visited people. As for show dogs, they have exceptional genes to start with and I think many are spayed when they retire from being shown and breeding. |

About the spaying, what was the procedure like.. Was Lola different afterwards? |
My aunt's dogs were mother and daughter, the mom died a few years ago. The vet is currently waiting and seeing for the daughter, he's afraid to put her under. Lola was spayed on Thursday, so it's only been a few days. She was very drugged the first night and almost totally normal the next day (just extra clingy). She's completely back to normal, no changes in her personality. It really wasn't a big deal to her. The hardest thing has been keeping her calm when people come in and limiting her jumping and running. |

Gaining weigh is a myth. If done before the first heat it prevents mammary cancer. My mom grew up with a dog who got in infection in her uterus and ending up it was so bad she had to be put to sleep. It's also not true that it changes there personality. People think this because they get a puppy and get it fixed when it is still coming into it's personality. As long as your puppy is over three pounds and you get the pre surgery blood work it should be fine. Most yorkies do not lose all of there baby teeth and end up getting them pulled at the same time they get fixed because leaving them can cause food to get stuck between double teeth and rot the tooth as well as mess up the alignment of there teeth so more then likely she will need to go under anesthesia anyway. There is nothing really scary about anesthesia when the right protocol is taken and the pre surgery blood work is done. |
If you are opting not to spay at this point, please remember that these panties or diapers are NOT for preventing breeding. A determined male would have no problem getting through them. Prevention of pyometra is not the only reason to spay, but it's a darn good one. If you've ever seen a dog die from this (and it can occur with the first heat cycle) you would know that it is an ugly, painful way to die. |
