Okay, guys, thank you but my vet has told me it's perfectly fine to not spay. I appreciate your input but I asked for panties and unless you have suggestions for that I would prefer to not have this post become a spaying discussion because it is not what the thread was intended to be for. Aside from that, I groom Chloe myself she does not go to groomers so that is not an issue for me. I do not need to look for "specialists" right now, either. What is right for one persons dog doesn't mean it is the ideal for everyone else's dog in the world. Thank you for the suggestions, however.

A spay does not change the personality of your dog.

Waiting until she's a year is fine but spaying now prior to her heat is preferable. Each heat cycle that a female has increases her chances of pyrometria, mammary tumors and other complications.

Also, did your vet mention anything to you about removing retained puppy teeth? Yorkies are known for having this issue and they need to be removed (usually during a spay) for prevention of peridental disease.

When she's in heat she need to stay home period! It cannot be "mostly" or "usually" home. Being a relatively new YT member you have no idea how many times we have read about all types of crazy ooops mating happening. Even worse there have been members who have had a puppy get away during a heat and for fear of the unknown puppy daddy had an emergency spay done which is much more risky.

Then there's your misinformation regarding weight gain or the inability to control their weight after a spay. It's all about the amount of food offered that could be an issue with weight control. My Pebbles was spayed at 5 months and she is always a perfect weight. Which leads me to your suggestion that your girl is too small at 2.5 lbs. Her weight or size should not be an issue and if it is for your vet then he's not the vet for a Yorkie. It's not a speciality it's just a rule of :thumbup: to have a vet capable of doing any surgery on your small dog.

I'd like to address your comment regarding Show Dogs not being spayed. It is a requirement that all dogs in the ring are unaltered. If they are show quality they might be breed for one or two litters but then are spayed or neutered. They do not live out their lives unspayed and reputable show breeders would NEVER rehome one of their show dogs unless they are spayed/neutered. If someone is giving you this information they are incorrectly informed.

As for others and myself suggesting spay prior to the first heat this is an open forum and we can voice whtever opinion on a topic that we please.

You are absolutely correct in that what's right for one person's dog isn't for another. You have to make choices based upon what you feel is correct, safe, healthy, best for your dog. Some people will insist that not spaying is okay and healthy - some will insist the opposite.

Hormones play HUGE parts in our bodies, and we *should* all be concerned about removing these very important chemicals from our dogs...it's valid to question and explore this common practice and wonder if it's indeed the best solution for our pets' health. It should always be okay and acceptable to question the norm. My gosh, if we were told to remove our own uteri due to the chance of illness, can you imagine? I really can't see removing my own organs to prevent a potential illness, unless absolutely necessary.

For me, I've chosen to spay/neuter my pets mostly due to chances of adding to the overpopulation of dogs. I don't want to take the chance of adding to it. I also did it for potential behavior issues. I did not, in any way shape or form, do it solely to prevent a potential illness.

My sister is a physician and she chose not to s/n her pets bc of the important role hormones play in our bodies and our health. The only real downside for her has been she can't have other male dogs in the house bc then hers will mark...he doesn't mark if there are no other male dogs present.

It's her choice, you all did what was best for pups, now the choice is hers. GIVE IT UP. It's a great reason to spay/neuter just for what you said alone. Overpopulation. I did it for this reason and also for the prevention of certain disease.

Wow again!!!

I spayed my last 2 females for health reasons, my first two I did not and paid the price for it, one got mammary tumors AND prometra, she was 13 y/o when operated for prometra, for 9 days I watched her slowly die, I took her back to the vet that did the operation, all he gave me was a tube of what could have been nautical, so long ago I don't remember, bottom line she died. the other not spayed got prometra 6 months later,but then I had a diff. vet, a better vet, they operated she lived for 6 months, died from a heart attack, not related to prometra operation,she was 13 y/o also from these two I learned IF NOT GOING TO BREED--SPAY. I had no intention to breed, they were spayed before first heat about 6 mos. old. One died at age 13 y/o she was on heart meds. died from kidney failure, my 2nd spayed girl I had to put down this past Oct. at the age of 16 y/o she had cushings & pancreatitis. The cushings was under controll it was the pancreatitis she had to be put down for. So I know the pros & cons of spaying and not spaying. I advise to spay if not going to breed, I believe in spaying and neutering. But it is up to the pups owner to decide what they want to do. So many have gotten on this thread about someone wanting advise about heat panties, and you have taken it to another topic. Like I posted..YOU ARE BEATING A DEAD HORSE HERE. Just give it up, you have offered a wealth of knowledge on this thread about benefits of spaying. So please, just let it be, and let it be a THREAD for the heat panties. Thank you

To the OP: you could also try baby diapers. How-ever with the wee lassies usually there is not a lot of blood. But it does depend on the female, and how well she continues to groom herself. Baby diapers of course are found everywhere.

And truth be told even the large lassies....

You have made up your mind (for now at least) about early spaying or lets call it what it is a full ovarian hystercotomy(sp). There are threads on here that will link you to research on the subject, and you can read up on the health risks/benefits of the procedures. You could also look at tubal ligation an alternative that keeps the hormones intact.

SO very true. Given we kill 3M+ animals each year, it truly is a good reason on its own, unless you can be so perfectly diligent in guarding an unaltered animal...I personally am not sure I want that risk.
