Not using mink sheen anymore
 

I loved it too till I did some research. All the talk that went on here about it and nobody questioned its ingredients and only one wondered why there was no ingredient list to it. I spent all afternoon looking for this information online and you cannot find it. I called the company and asked"does this shampoo contain soap?"
They said they didn't know and the " others" were out to lunch and she would call me back. That didn't happen.
My vet gave me strict instructions not to use a shampoo that contained soap because for one .....soap is an irritant but mainly because it will wash off my flea and tick topical.

Do this....Google What is soap and prepare to be floored....then try and figure out if your shampoo contains it.

It is made using the animal the mink too another reason why they didnt want to say the ingredients. I used to use it also

That is disappointing that the company could not answer a simple question, and that they did not return your call.

As Chachi wrote, there have been threads on YT by people urging others not to use Minksheen because of the mink oil and animal cruelty.

There is an argument to be made that soap is too harsh and not ideal for health. I read skincare forums and there are people who never use soap on their faces. They wash only with water or various solutions of olive oil, oatmeal, and other natural ingredients. The also use sodium chloride and sulfate free shampoos.

Relative to the flea and tick preventatives -- My understanding is that the chemicals are absorbed into the body and that is how they work, so it is safe to wash after about 24 hours. In other words, the preventative is not working outside our pets' bodies, topically. Is this correct?

I bought the 64 oz MS from amazon and it doesn't list the ingredients. All the bottle says is, MS is a concentrated shampoo and conditioner with added benefits of an antibacterial to protect you and your pet from germs. Mink oil is added to give your pet a soft, shiny "show" quality coat with every bath. Vit E is added to help soothe and heal "Hot Spots", sensitive or irritated skin. The blend of citronella, eucalyptus, and cedar oils will protect your pet from "biting" insects and leave your pet smelling fresh for up to 7days.

Amazon sells it but they don't list the ingredients either.

I believe I read on here that some also have used it on their own hair.

I loved Minksheen, but chose to stop using it because it contained mink oil and I am against cruelty to animals. Me not purchasing it isn't going to stop them from making it, but I do my best to not support companies/corporations who are cruel to animals or people. (Examples: KFC, Hobby Lobby, Wal-Mart, etc).

I didnt even know they used Minks to make it until Ann the moderator pointed it out. I quess I should have because of the name but I didnt. It is really hard to not support the using of animals because no matter what we are all going to buy leather shoes but I dont see animal shampoos as a necessity that you need to support the cruelty of animals to make

I thought about this a little more and I shouldn't be surprised. Unlike human hair products, most pet grooming products do not put the full list of ingredients on their bottles, and many companies will not disclose them.

Part of the reason is a real desire to keep their products from being duplicated, but I understand this does not help consumers who want to know what they are using on their pets.

Espree and Bio-Groom do not contain soap/detergent -- that much they will say. There are several other big names, but I don't want to rely on my memory alone. I would have to double check them.

Biogroom is what I use now its good to know theres no soap in it

Yes, that is correct. The topicals are absorbed into the body. It is safe to bathe after 24 to 48 hours.

This is why I will never understand that so many vets say not to bathe the dog until right before the next dose. Although many vets do not understand that certain dog breeds need a bath more often than once every month or two.

Nope, fraid not correct. This is Vectra 3D....and does not absorb into the blood stream . It is a topical, squeeze a little tube on backside mid back up to base of neck.it will then spread to other hair follicles and repel and kill fleas and ticks. They said they can feel,it spread and kinda wiggle a little, but as soon as a flea or tick lands on them they get right off. There is a picture of 2 hands one covered with mosquitoes , the other not....hmmmm

That is why you must not use a shampoo that contains soap. Washes it off.

My new shampoo is made by Sogeval....it is an aloe and oatmeal shampoo and on the back lists it's ingredients AND says it is a hypoallergenic soap free formulation.
So to me if compAnies don't want to follow thru with customer service concerns or divulge ingredient info ......I am suspicious there is a reason for it.

Going to start new thread to ask if there are any users of vectra3 D....dang it....I've never heard of that either!

Good question. A number of dog shampoos/conditioners do indicate they are biodegradable, like Espree, Biogroom, All Systems, and I believe Isle of Dogs who has a sulfate free line.

Shampoo without soap? Not sure what that means; Soap or any other surfactant basically dissolves oil to cleanse. Dirt, bacteria, etc. attach to the skin and sticks to the oils naturally produce by the skin to protect it = sebum. Anything that bubbles is basically a surfactant. Have you heard of WEN shampoo = no suds, it is more like a lotion, does not strip oils. Natural soap is probably better than anything containing sodium laureate sulfates or the likes. Soap is created when fats and sodium hydroxide (lye) or potassium hydroxide are mixed together. to produce good soap all the lye must be utilized. Some soap makers super fat their soaps so that all the lye is utilized and some oil is left in the final product/soap to make it more moisturizing. During the soap making process (saponification) fats/oils (vegetable or animal fats/oils), water and lye mix to produce 3 parts soap and 1 part glycerin (which is remove to resale on most commercial bars.) Lye is salt water treated with electricity. Sodium hydroxide/lye is used to cure olive, in pretzels, and other foods you may be surprise. Lye also occurs in nature when water passes through hard wood ashes, which can be used instead of electricity. Soap is not as bad as you may think as the skin replenished its sebum and protection rather quickly after you bathe. Sorry for such a long winded post, but I thought this information may be helpful on this post. The bad ingredients are those that are hormone disruptors, carcinogens, etc. I stay away from the sodium laureate sulfates, parabens, EDTA, fragrance, amonst others. Hope this helps.

Here's a gross fact about most soaps and what they are made of, well at least one ingredient I know about. As a teenager, I worked at McDonalds and they used to save all their fryer grease, because they would sell it to soap companies :-( yes, used fast food grease is one of the main ingredients in most soaps !!!! I was so grossed out by it, that I never used soap based products ever again. Thankfully I am a licensed cosmetologist and can buy from wholesale companies that sell only top of the line products, for a fraction of what the cheap brands cost. But that always stuck in my mind how they sell that used fryer grease to all the different soap companies, and I also seen the soap companies come and pick up all those disgusting drums filled with the nasty stuff :-(

During WWII when everyday items were rationed, my grandmother made her own laundry soap with saved cooking grease. I googled and it seems to be a common practice among enviros to use leftover cooking grease for everything from powering cars to making soaps/toiletries.

Yup...I don't have a prob w/ the soap, it's the fact that its ingredients are obtained *cruelly* from minks, and that's not okay in my book and it's easily a product I can do without.

Chachi...the fact you choose not to use this oil is a *wonderful* thing, so don't downplay it bc, say, you're still buying leather shoes :). EVERY/ANY little thing you do toward not contributing to animal cruelty is important, worthy, and meaningful...it's a step in the direction that helps contribute toward their betterment. That's a win in my book!

That is when soap was starting to be made of petroleum by products, some may still be made of it.

You may want to look for soaps that are based on vegetable oils versus animal fats and stay away from the dangerous chemicals for you and your babies.
I don't know anything about Mink shampoo though, so I don't know what they use.

Yea I can handle powering a vehicle with left over cooking grease, but man that grease they sell to soap manufacturers from McDonald's is nasty lol. It really left a mark on me when I found out about it. I only worked there for 2 weeks, and quit because everything behind the back counter was so gross. I still don't eat there HAHAHAHA
