Reputable breeders that work really hard on there lines don't just let anyone breed there lines and will have a spay and neuter contract. So not to offend you but I'm guessing your dogs lines aren't all that great if there was no spay and neuter contract. Health issues that you don't know about could run in there lines.

Not offend that is why I am here. Hearing this makes me feel better because I got her as a pet and not to breed. I just felt wrong for breaking up her family line.

Also, in the county I live in, by law you must spay or neuter your pet between the ages of 4-6 months or your hit with a heavy fine or they will take you dog from you. The only way out of this is to become a registered breeder, which cost time and money to do (which you are aware of). People here don't breed for the money, because by the time everything is said and done there is no profit.

But after hearing that my lines might not all be great, she will defiantly be getting done next month. Why bring on more stress?

OP, when you say your dog is CKC registered, are you talking Canadian Kennel Club or Continental Kennel Club?? The problem with Continental is that they will let you register anything. Even if your dog is AKC registered, it still doesn't mean it's breeding material. I have no idea what the stats are, but even out of all of the AKC registered dogs, a VERY small fraction of those qualify as good breeding material. Having said that....there are people out there who will breed anything, regardless of whether it's good to breed or not because they are just out to make money, but that's why we have a huge pet overpopulation and that's also why we have all of the genetic problems we have in the yorkie line.


I understand your dog is beautiful and sweet...but there's a lot more to consider when breeding...like your dogs pedigree, it's conformation, it's health and genetic testing. You can think of it like this...not everyone is cut out to be a soldier...it's the same with dogs when it comes to breeding.

If we were talking about a world where there wasn't a huge overpopulation of dogs sitting in shelters, being put to sleep everyday because they can't find a home....than I may be singing a completely different tune...but when there are purebred yorkies out there, just like your precious little one, in dire need of homes, it makes it much harder to justify bringing more pet quality yorkies into the world.

BTW...I am not anti-breeder either. I just believe that if we are going to add to the pet population problem, it should only be the best of the best. The dogs should come from champion bloodlines, have no health or genetic issues(BTW, a regular vet cannot determine this!! Your dogs must go to board certified specialists to determine this) and be a show quality dog.


If you want to become a breeder, I think this is a great place to learn how to breed. I think right now, what you have is a lovely pet at home who has peaked your interest in yorkies and breeding, but if you want to breed, you may want to find a show breeder who's willing to help you and mentor you and help you start out the right way with good breeding stock from an AKC CHAMPION bloodline. Unfortunately yet understandably, this is easier said than done because the people who have good lines, hold onto them and protect them dearly. They don't just hand out breeding rights to anybody because they don't want their lines muddied with bad breeding choices...but if you stick around here and the dog world long enough and network enough and are serious about it, I am certain you'll find someone, especially down in Texas.
