Uuuuuuuuggggghhhh Well here we go again. Yet another critter has made its way to our home. For you who don't know, I live in the country and always have "visitors". Well tonight I go to let the dogs out. It is pouring outside. Mikki heads to the left, Rosie to the right. To the right is my flower bed which has roses and a huge nandina bush. And what comes out of my nandina bush?? A possum!! Of course Rosie decides to go after it. The poor thing was terrified. I'm running in the rain screaming at Rosie while Mikki sats and watches the whole thing. Bless her heart she never moved. What a good Mikki!! I finally caught Rosie and the possum went on its merry way. Sigh.....one more critter. |
Scary! I'm glad she didn't get ahold of it. |
That is very scary. Once a while ago, we had a little miniature pinscher. Let her out one night, heard a ruckus in the yard. We went out to find she had an opossum in her mouth shaking the heck out of it. The opossum was twice her size. She had no fear. This little dog was very stubborn and hardly ever did was she was told. I yelled at her to drop it and she did. She came up on the porch and the opossum waddled off. That was really scary. Took her to the vet and she didn't have a mark on her. I washed her mouth and body really well, because just the thought of it was disgusting |
Glad she didn't get it:) Thankfully there's no critters where I am (city area) |
Good thing it didn't get her. Those things have some mean claws. My husband hit one with the car. It got in the wheel well and ripped out some wiring. |
Thank goodness little Rosie was the victor in that 'possum match. They are mean, nasty little critters that eat anything and everything. I can only imagine the filth carried in their mouths and the dangers of a bite. |
Scary... I'm glad she's okay. As much as I love this breed, I have to say that's the one thing I don't like about them. They are absolutely fearless and it gets them into trouble! |

Thank goodness you were able to catch Rosie before she caught the possum! Don't tell her that Teddy is impressed and would have gone for the chase too. Max would be like Mikki and keep a safe distance, although he would bark for support. :D Quote:

4 Attachment(s) We get possums from time to time on our fence. I have posted pics of my pups trying their best to get "Polly" the nickname I give all of the possums. :) They are not mean by nature. Here is a link with some FAQs about them: Frequently Asked Questions - Opossum Problems and Solutions ---------------- Some pics of our recent visitor. I worry more about poor Polly than my pups! :) Cookie flips her wig! Attachment 397647 Attachment 397648 Attachment 397649 Attachment 397650 |
This happened to me a few years ago it was quite scary. I was so afrid the dogs were going to get attacked. I immediately went out and got a big rechargeable spot light that I keep by the back door. In the summertime I will go out first and do a quick scan of the yard before I let the dogs out. This light is soooo bright I can scan the yard practically standing in just two spots. Only takes about 30 seconds to do for peace of mind. Amazon.com: Black & Decker LEDLIB Lithium Ion LED... |

When I lived in the mountains on 20 acres of land, my female chow would chase everything, and I mean everything !!!!!! One day she seen a raccoon at the bottom of our mountain, and started chasing it. It scared the heck out of me because they are soooo mean, so I'm running behind her screaming for her to stop and she's just yelling back at me arrr rarrrr arrr rarrrrr , my interpretation was wow mom a raccoon, I can't believe it's a raccoon in broad daylight, I can't stop now !!!!! Well I ran as fast as I could up this huge steep mountain, and when I got to the top, thankfully the raccoon had made it up a very big tree, I just thanked god that the raccoon ran up that tree instead of taking on daisy :-) that would have been a losing battle for daisy for sure !!!! |

Cookie chased one up the gutter and onto the roof one night. I felt sorry for the poor thing...it was up there looking so lost and Cookie was screaming her head off trying to figure out how to climb the gutter! Attachment 397654 Attachment 397655 |

Oh, Rhonda, you and those critters that seem to visit your home ever so often! Scary for your babies this time. Thank goodness Rosie didn't catch up to the possum before Mommie got her and good for Mikki just staying put when sister Rosie was making the point to Mr. or Ms. Possum. These little terriers so often take real offense to another "visitor" being in their territory and seem to think it's VERY important that they send a message not to repeat the visit. These little security guards may be pint-sized but they take their job very seriously. |
My former dog, Sophie, RIP, a silky terrier, 12 pounds, brought in possums through the doggie door -- three times over her 13 years. Well, two were possums and one was some kind of generic brown animal. You think I would learn! She was so proud, running around the living room with it. Fortunately they were small and "played possum" or were actually dead when they were in the house. Pretty gross for sure. I think they all left on their own after DHH took them outside. Sophie got a larger one on the ramp once but it was too big for the opening. I made her come in and closed the door. The possum was gone in the morning. Long story short, the doggie door is now closed well before dark and Yorkies stay in! |

I live in a wooded area that is also seems to be a drop off spot for people who abandon pets. We have plenty of forest creatures as well. When I used to leave food out for the feral cats or frightened dogs at night we would have opossums, racoons, skunks, foxes, porcupines, etc. on the patio eating up the pet food. Amazingly they all got along just fine and many brought their families with them. Had to stop feeding at night time since attracting small creatures like that also attracts larger predators. It was getting kind of expensive as well. Now the feeding station is farther out in the woods and only stocked during the day. Gracie is never allowed off lead outside. Just too dangerous. |
