Would You Know Your Yorkie If Shaved Down ?? There have been a lot of missing/stolen yorkies in our area. Apparently people are stealing the dog's and shaving them down where they don't look the same and selling them on Craigs List. Someone thought a York listed was theirs but said no it couldn't be because it was shaved down. Turned out it was their Yorkie. They only got the dog back because the person who bought the dog was honest enough and had the dog scanned. |
That's horrible! Honestly if it wasn't for Draco's eyes I probably wouldn't. If he were shaved right now he'd be a different color as he's just now getting his silver in and He'd look completely different. Though I'd like to say I'd know his face anywhere, but I've never seen him completely shaven. However the one thing about Draco's eyes is his left eye contains more pigment or whatever that makes them reflective. The vet said there was nothing wrong with his eye nor was it harming his sight. But his left eye shines very easily and noticeably more than the right. No matter how much or little light, if he's pupils aren't constricted it's kinda noticeable after looking in his eyes a bit. |
I would know mine because we do get them cut down at the groomers and I would just know there eyes no matter what they both had there mothers eyes |
I would know Laddy as he has been but honestly not sure if I would Kyra. I like to think I would because of her sweet little face but not sure since she has always been in long coat. |
Umm, good question, though I probably would, Alfie has such thin hair I would possibly recognize his shape but not 100% certain. |
I think I would. I get Kaji shaved down often, or I do it myself. The longest I've had him is mid length and he didn't look good. :p |
I am pretty sure I'd know Keeg--I keep his hair short and he's blonde all over, even so, I think his eyes would be the quickest way for me to tell it's him in a photo. Piper, though...she's still growing and has a multi-colored, long puppy coat...it would be hard to ID her just from a photo if she'd been shaved. She's micro-chipped, but she's also a runner and it would be my worst nightmare for her to get lost/stolen. |
A very good question.... Well, I think I would because of his size..... but then, a lot of Yorkies are on the 'larger size' over here. I think about him in the bath, when even Huge Harry looks like a skinny little soul - he looks like a Charity advert in the bath.... But again, it's his eyes....the way they look directly at ME, the softness in them, the 'just one ear cocked' when I talk to him, the little quiffy bit of hair that always sticks up over his left ear (however short it is!!! :)) Oh, loads of little, seemingly trivial quirks that makes him just 'my Harry'....:) |
While I'd like to think I would recognize ZoE, even shaved down, I'm not sure that I would. I remember being astounded at how differently my last yorkie looked after getting cut short one summer, and I was the one that did the grooming! |
I definitely would. There's a lot of little things on him that I could tell by, like his outie belly button lol or his nails, one is half white and half black, and obviously just the way he would act by seeing me. |
All good points, Alfie like Joel has one single white nail on his rear right paw so I think I would almost certainly know him from that and from other little things like Harry if I could actually touch and hold him, but if that we're the case it wouldn't really matter because he would absolutely know me. But from just a picture on a website....... |

But how could you tell people on Craigslist what to look for? Either have a picture of them clipped or photoshop their face on a short-haired body, saying "This is what he might look like if the thieves shaved him. |
Both of mine have a black freckle on their right back leg. Ironically, my son also has a black freckle on his right leg. :) |
I'm not sure just by looking at a picture. Mine have never been shaved down. Cali has a weird growth by her ear(Vet checked out) that I would be able to tell her by. The other two maybe but for sure if i could talk to them. |
Our Gracie is a parti, so absolutely, but I am not sure about our first little one. Sometimes they would have several yorkies at the groomer's shop, and I would talk to her to see how she reacted before I was sure they were sending the right dog with me! To the groomers credit, though, I am sure they could tell the difference. It reminds me of my mom and her sisters joking about hosing us off after a busy summer play date to make sure they took the right kids home.;) |

I would know Teddy for sure because he has very unusual coat coloring that would show even more shaved down. He also has a distinctive head shape and body build. Max, I would like to think I would know his face. I often pull his beard back behind his head to see what he would look like without all of the hair. Still looks like himself. Seeing them both in the bath soaking wet, I know what they look like without the fluff. |
I am pretty sure I would. Tibbe's got a short muzzle and "smiley" mouth. He is bowlegged in front, stands with his elbows out at times and has a very short stub of a tail, much shorter than most Yorkies & practically never wags it unless he's playbiting me or being played with very, very roughly and he's kind of hyper - the ONLY times he wags that tiny tail. If somebody told me they had a dog with a tail that wagged constantly, I would almost certainly KNOW it wasn't Tibbe! Plus, I have close-up photos of the moles or dark spots on his tummy and know just where all of them are placed. He's also got a vestigial dew claw on the right foreleg which would further identify him and of course, he's chipped. Hopefully, I never have to identify him this way, though! Thank the Lord those people had a responsible dog-lover who found their baby! |
I don't know... I believe fear would change the sweet, innocent, trusting faces I see everyday. Look at the before and after pics of Yoshi: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-yoshi-26.html |
That is just horrible that anyone could take a dog away from its family to do that just to make some quick cash. Very sad !! To answer your question, YES I would know my babies anywhere ! |

I can't imagine going that long without your pup to find him again. |

I even look back at the pics when I first got mine (all as adults), and they just all look so scared... being in a new place with new people and all. They look so different to me in their more recent pics. |
I guess the next best thing is to have our babies tattooed, say like inner thigh area. I'm going to ask my vet about this. |

4 Attachment(s) Kaji with long hair: Attachment 397356Attachment 397357 Kaji with long hair in bath: Attachment 397358 Kaji with NO HAIR: Attachment 397359 This is making me want to try to grow out his hair again. :p He is so miserable with long hair. He hates being brushed. :( |
Wow, what a great question that I can't answer! I do know I'd be able to look at other little parts of their bodies to confirm it's them but geez, how scary if they were shaved down and they didn't even look like themselves! |
Well Callie is shaved down lol she also does not look like a standard yorkie so not sure she would be a money maker but she has a few special spots that wouldn't come off and are unique that would set her apart. I will never understand why or how people can steal other peoples things. |
Prince had short hair when I got him, so I think i'd probably know him. Ricky, I am not so sure about as he's always had long hair, but his coat color is pretty unique. |
