Help with a top knot Does anyone know an easy way to put a top knot in? I struggle with getting Abby's to look good. ( struggle getting it in too :() Thanks in advance |
Join the sloppy top-knot club! Even if I get Gunners in right, or it looks good, it will look messy as soon as I put him on the ground! Do you have a pillow for him to lay his head down when you do the top-knot? I use a car neck pillow and have taught Gunner "head down" and he will lay his head down and close his eyes. There are many video's on youtube on how to do one, but I didn't learn much from those. I think it is just practice makes perfect? (or in my case not so perfect but who cares)! |
Practice practice practice, for you and the pup. Lola was 9 or 10 months old before she learned to sit still. I sit on the couch with Lola between my lap and the arm rest with her head on a folded towel. I use a rat tail comb to seperate the hair, then comb the pony tail to smooth the loose hairs. After the band is in make sure it isn't too tight or pulling any hairs. It just takes practice to get it in the right spot and at the right angle. |
Are you wanting an "official topknot" or just putting your pups hair up? I gave up doing a correct top knot. I just use scrunchies and hair bows with a "top pony tail". Lol. |
There are members here that sell top knot pillows. I have one and they are great. |
3 Attachment(s) Here is what we do twice daily. Morning I put in the top-knot at night it comes out. We've been doing this since he came home so he is used to it. I tell him "head down" and he will lay down and close his eyes. I use the detangling spray after I take the band out. Last photo is all done and now he gets his cookie for being a good boy. He is laying on one of those neck pillows you buy for long flights. It was a couple of dollars at Wally World. |
Put the band in a little bit up then let the hair all sort of fan over the band. Pick a few hairs right in the middle and pull up and it will create a little poof. I hope that makes some sense….. |
Also Smooth those little frizzies down around the base or they will get tangled up in your twist, I use top knot gel or if nothing else a little water |

I was just trying to show the OP how to put the dog on the table and have her lay her little head on a pillow to allow her to put the top-knot in. |
Within seconds of doing my Lou Lou's topknot she shakes her head and the pony tail is usually flopping over her face...When I take it out she looks like ''It'' from the Adams family...At least she lies still to let me do it.. Shirl |
Ricky's got a messy topknot and he hates me messing with it. He hides under the coffee table or in his dog house if he sees me going for the brush. I just started using scrunchies and those are wonderful though...much easier to use than the rubber bands. I did buy some doggie hair gel and it helps a little when I use it. I went to a dog show last month, hoping beyond hope that I could find a show breeder who would show me how to put a top knot in, but I ended up missing everything but the puppy class with one entry in it and her pup didn't have the traditional topknot because the hair was too short. What is a top knot pillow?? |

Ooooohhhhh, Abby hates to be brushed. I don't know that she would lay on the pillow for me to put a top knot in. (Especially seeing the brush in my hand) :( |

I'm just happy getting a "top pony tail" ( love that name ). I have to use one of those groomer bands (that's a chore in itself ) :) or nothing stays in. |

I think I have one of them. Maybe I'll give it a try. Don't know how she will react. |

What kind of brush do you use? Hope not a pin brush , their little heads are pretty sensitive. I went to babies r us and got one of those small soft bristle brushes. I then spray it with detanglin spray and brush her head all around. |

Mmmm If they don't like it , try something different. A BABY brush has the softest bristles. I got one at Walmart and the bristles were too stiff , Babies R Us store has the soft ones, and they are small too and lightweight. Zoey loves her little head brushed. Sometimes we don't realize the pressure we put on the little tykes too when we handle them. She also loves her eyes wiped with a warm wet washrag in th am when she gets up and can't wait to get the hair out of her eyes with a topknot. Then lookout! She's feeling good and ready to play! |
I love the top knots! My fiance is against it though saying Oliver is a boy, let him be a boy. My boy is only 4 months and his hair is too short for it now anyway. I would love to to try it once, but the growing out process is going to be tough because the hair is all over his eyes before I can actually tie it some how. |
Opp 3 Attachment(s) Don't know where my pics went I will try again! Anyway.....here is Zoeys bedhead and she so appreciates it when I wipe her eyes and get that hair out of her eyes! Plus.... hair in eyes = irritation= not good. Can't see! Eye boogies eye Matt. Get a BLUE or BLACK barrette and call it a bow tye! Lol Makes them feel so much better. |
Omg I'm in love with your baby bed head! So funny. I wish my pup appreciate me wiping gunk off his face. He uses his paws to push my hand out of his face and look away. It's always a mission! |
Lol Maybe I shoulda showed you how nasty it was underneath! Maybe they need to be a little older to appreciate it. Zoey is almost 10 months |

Looks like your fur baby enjoys the head brushing. Her coloring is so pretty! I wish Abby's "top knot" looked that good. :) |
Lol! Thanks Give it time....it'll grow |

Do you also use a groomers band or just the scrunchies? If you don't use a groomers band, what scrunchies do you use that will stay in? One shake of Abby's head and it's half out :( |
Hi. I posted a while back on the Grooming forum. I started using those rubber bands that are all the rage for the band bracelets the kids are making. They are very soft and pliable. A a bag of 600 is about $2.49. You can get them in all the craft shops. I have even gotten them at the supermarket. At less than a penny a piece, you can snip them out at the end of the day. No pulling or breaking hair. They stay in all day - even with my two puppies, who are romping and playing all day. |
How much hair does your little one have?! Those fit around my fur baby's leg to keep her socks on! I think they're huge lol.. I get mine on amazon |
We have a 3.5 pound tiny with long silky hair. Nothing stayed in for very long. These work beautifully. Are we talking about the same silicone bands the kids are using to make bracelets? I am buying them all up in NJ :) |
I use the bracelet bands too, I twist them twice (3 loops around her hair) on normal days and twist it 3x (4 loops) on days when I use a bow. It stays in for 24 hours, but it's pretty messy after about 12. Her hair is too long to leave it totally down. I like them because little hairs don't get tangled around the band nearly as often and I don't have to make the band as tight. I found packs of 300 for $1 at target. |
