10 lb bags of Royal Canin Now that I have switched Cookie from Royal Cabin 29 puppy to Royal Cabin 28 adult, I can get 10 lb bags instead of the 2.5 lb ones for about half the price per cup of food. I imagine the 10 lb bag is great for people with more than one yorkie, but with only one yorkie to feed is it still a good buy? Will it generally stay fresh long enough to finish the bag when fed at a rate of about 1/2 a cup per day? Thanks! |
I forgot to mention that we have a pretty humid climate in South Texas, which I'm guessing can't help. Anyone have experience using the 10 lb bags, especially in Gulf Coast states with high humidity? |
I bought a 10 lb bag of it one time when i had one dog and it lasted for about 3-4 months. What I did was pull a bit of it out and put it in a Tupperware container to feed and then I kept the rest sealed up until I finished what was in the Tupperware container. |

I keep puppy and cat food in air tight containers. I don't purchase 10 lbs bag though, not yet. Maybe invest in a larger air tight storage bin? I also store the food in the pantry to keep it away from the sun. Just make sure to keep it in a dark, cool, and dry area. |
I buy the big bag too, even when I had just one dog. I've never had a problem with staleness, the bags are great, foil and plastic coated. Just be sure and squeeze any excess air out of the bag before you seal it. I prefer clipping it to using their "zipper". I think I can get more air out of the bag. The problem with having any excess air in the bag or any type of container is the air has moisture and that's what causes the product to go stale. You don't have to worry about it spoiling, it might lose some flavor, but your dog will definitely let you know if it does. I think it smells just as good at the end of the bag as it does when I open it. Lol, I really like the way the food smells, sometimes I'm tempted to take some. :p |

I just brought home a 15 lb. bag yesterday & I immediately seal about 3/4s of it in plastic containers & freeze them. I've been doing this for years & it works great. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this? |
All of the above mentioned ways to preserve the food are super ideas! And RC comes in a sealable bag, so it staying fresh should not be an issue! |
Royal Canin really doesnt seem to be that great of a dog food. only a 3 star rating, but is expensive. I feed mine Wellness Core. about the same price, but 5 star quality. But as for keeping it fresh. I agree with the above. Royal Canin Mini Adult Dog Food | Review and Rating Wellness Core Dog Food | Review and Rating |

They sell airtight containers to keep pet food in that work very well for keeping the food fresh. They seal air out so your food won't be effected by the humidity. |

Im sorry. I didn't mean to come across high an mighty if I did. I need to work on how I word things when typing the out. I do apologize. I am still learning what are the best foods out there as well. I was simply trying to open discussion on it to try to find out why you guys might think it is better, perhaps I would agree once hearing your reasons an want to switch my dogs. Sorry for coming cross the wrong way. |

Jackson has eaten Acana the most consistently in his life, but we've switched around/rotated a bit. For example, Fromm is/was a popular brand around here for Yorkies and most do really well, but Jackson did not. Otherwise, he's never had any MAJOR issues with food (minus little things that I notice, more or less stool, softer/harder, eye tearing, hair texture, etc). Even though I currently feed Acana as his primary diet, I recently had a 2.5lb bag of the Royal Canin YT formula with no ill effects, he really really likes the flavor, so I use it for interactive toys/etc. I was considering feeding it more consistently but the price really stinks when you have a 17lb dog. A 2.5lb bag wouldn't last him too long, and 10lbs really is just too much for my one dog for my own preference. It's just very pricey for a larger Yorkie, but I do trust the company. I actually even *gulp* picked up a bag of Purina One Beyond the other day at the grocery store. No corn, no soy, no wheat, it's actually a pretty darn decent food. I wanted to have extra food because of the snow storm and didn't feel like going to the pet store where they sell Acana. His poop was better than ever yesterday and today, and the price was super cheap (it was like $7 for 3.5lbs). Who woulda thought. |

I hope I didn't. |

I have raised dogs all my life. Mostly mutts. I always fed the grocery store brand food, Purina One was one of my favorites and a dog trainer friend of mine swears by it. but she has 4 really large dogs and can not afford to feed the high priced stuff at the pet store. Anyway, it wasn't until I got my Shih Tzu a year ago,( a breed well known for having sensitive tummies), that I really started to pay attention to what I fed my dog, how good of a quality food it was, what it was made of etc. My breeder for my Shih Tzu, and all the research I did on the breed told me I had to be very careful on what I fed my little guy. So I started paying attention. I have only been at it for a year now however, and am still learning. But Athena is my first Yorkie. It is possible her needs may be different from his. Even if they normally wouldnt be, no tow dogs are alike regardless same breed of not. Your right that it gets very confusing researching it online. I often feel far more confused after I research then I was before. It all depends on who you talk to, what page you go to, who does the article/ review....who do you trust and who dont you? You know I almost got RC formula for weening puppies when I first brought Athena home because she was so young. I ddint because I thought it wasn't a good brand. now I kin of wish I had. But she is doing great on the wellness core. I will however consider changing when what I have for her now is gone. that will be a little while though. Its a brand new 5 lb bag. |

lol no not really, but it did come across a bit defensive to me, which is what caused me to re-read mine and realize perhaps I could have worded that a lot better. Its so hard when typing. misunderstandings can come about easily. |
