Ok, please don't judge me harshly but I can't shake this uneasiness over finding out that my pup will have a thin silk coat versus the hard silk (thick) that his litter mates have. I know this sounds terrible.... I still love him and think he is the cutest little guy. But I envy the other coat... It's what I always wanted. A poofy puppy cut into adulthood. It's always been my preference. I'm scared his skin will show through or he will look scraggly with it short. What are your guys experiences with this? Puppy cut photos of thin silk adults are much appreciated. as well on anything i can do to help his coat. Is there a chance his coat will thicken up and catch up to his sisters as an adult ? Right now she seems so much bigger because she is such a poof ball.

What makes you think he will have a thin silk coat? I am not familiar with the term "hard silk", is that like what is called cotton coat?

It takes about 2 years of changes for the coat to fully mature, and I'll bet he has plenty of gorgeous hair. Relax and be patient, and he will have a wonderful coat.

My Yorkie Tiki has a silky coat, which many prefer because it doesn't tangle and matt as much as a cotton coat. I kept her hair long for a while because she was so thin. Then I cut it short on her back and only keep the face and legs long, and I love it so much more.

Hard silk is what my breeder says they describe it as at shows. It's a silky coat but is thicker. Thick and Silky. These two dogs are her dogs and both had really silky hair. But you can clearly see the thicker coat. Cotton was a completely different texture, but thick too... I like it as well.

BabyBasil 01-27-2014 11:30 PM

Both coats were super shiny and silky , but the first one was just more hair

Here is the other silky coat...

Maybe the first one is what most people refer to as cotton... Dunno

Ok looking at your dogs with puppy cuts makes me feel better haha

Basil is adorable. His coat looks very nice to me. Either way he is beautiful. I have to standard yorkies/ Pixie has a silky coat, Roxie and Cali have cottony coats. Pixie is a dream to groom, the other 2 not so much.

Lovetodream88 01-28-2014 05:51 AM

I think he is far to young to tell what kind of coat he will have.

Beautiful dog in the photo.

For standard Yorkies, "hard silk" refers to the texture of the hair, not thickness. My understanding is that silky silk is preferable. Often the silkiest of coats start out a little sparse and are slow growing. You can ask this question in the show section of this forum and get some more feedback.

Puppy coats mature at different rates. Max's matured quickly, whereas Teddy's was still changing well into his second year -- ETA: they are full brothers.

WannaBe 01-28-2014 06:35 AM

My pup looks just like yours and at almost 7 months he has more hair than I can handle most days. I think he will be beautiful all grown up.

Bonnie had the softest hair, ever, and she had a ton of it! But if I shaved her too short it was like scalping her. I kept her body short, but not shaved to the skin short and it looked just fine. I left her legs and tail long and did a nice balanced trim on her face. Whatever coat type he ends up with, you should be able to find a cut that will work well.

Sounds like I still have hope then! I think you are right on the def of hard silk. The Breeder probably just gave me her best guess from her experience. She used to show yorkies before switching to biewers. Wannabe , I'll still pray for a coat like your pups.

And Teresa , that cut is so cute! Did you do it yourself?? He looks like he has a thick coat too. I just hope he has a lot of whatever coat he has lol

gracielove 01-28-2014 10:35 AM

How old is your dog? The photo you show does not look all that thin for a Yorkie pup. Adult coat won't be in until he is almost a year and it could continue to thicken after that. Not all pups develop at the same rate. Some breeders have been very surprised by the adult version of the pup they sold as pet quality.

He is ten weeks old. I'm he has a coat but next to the other two siblings it just looks thinner. The only pic I have is this one but you can sort of see the difference but not as well because he is standing closer to the camera. In person, the sister looks about 15% larger just because of her thick coat.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...9871f66a56.jpg

Thank you for the info though, that gives me hope. I didn't really ask the breeder because I didn't want to insult her puppy, ( if someone asked that much about my puppy it would bother me). All I asked was what she thought he would have. She has been showing them for about 40 years or so, and probably gave me her best guess. And then I went home and started freaking out.

My boy looked just like your new pup, and this is him at 7 months. He has so much coat I can hardly keep up with him! He has a cotton coat though. I hope yours does have a silky coat, cotton is hard to manage.

BabyBasil 01-28-2014 01:04 PM

Can you send him to my place this week? I need to give him some kisses

lillymae 01-28-2014 02:01 PM

He is Adorable. I think his coat looks perfectly normal for his age. Often times the white hair is fluffier & a bit diff in texture then the colored hair & this may be the diff between him & his siblings. Whatever the case I think you are worrying for nothing. Just give it some time & I bet you will see, he will have a Beautiful coat & as someone else said, more then you can keep up with. Then you will look back & laugh that you worried it would be too thin, lol.

Ok found a photo which shows what I was talking about. At least that way you know why I got worries originally. ( he is te one in the middle )

dog

Every dog is a special creation. I would not look too seriously at his coat but at his sweet little personality and the way he will be so faithful and true to you. All beauty is really found inside and I believe that is true in dogs. I am so thankful he has you for his owner. Love him and watch him become a beautiful dog inside and out!

His coat looks thick, just shorter than his littermates. I wouldn't worry. By next year, you will be thinking, "Holy cow, what am I going to do with all of this hair?" :)

kjc 01-28-2014 09:20 PM

Love him no matter what. If when his coat grows out you still are not crazy about it, buy him a playmate and try again for the coat you so desire. He'll be needing a BFF anyway!

gracielove 01-29-2014 07:58 AM

If he has hair that thick at his age I would venture to guess he is going to have more than enough coat when he matures. Keep him on a quality diet, make sure he gets his Omega 3's, keep him parasite free, and his coat will develop as well as his genes allow. He has a good start. The rate of development can vary.

People who show their dogs do want a good coat to start out with but they have to take other features into consideration as well. Long show coats require a tremendous amount of work to develop and maintain. An experienced show/breeder has a number of tricks in their bag to make a not so great coat appear faultless in the ring. By the looks of those coats your breeder does not have too use many of them.

He's so adorable, but really, have you ever read the story about the ugly duckling? It's really applicable here. Puppies with silk coat don't look as poufy and cute as those with what your breeder calls hard silk, but I think they actually have cotton coats. Silk coats look thin on puppies, not ever poufy, but they grow into gorgeous adults. Forget the looks, do you have any idea how hard it is to take care of a cotton coat, they mat all the time. Now a puppies coat will mat, but a silky coat usually outgrows this by a year. Cotton coats will mat all their lives and you really have to be dedicated to keep the mats out. I think you are the lucky one, and I'm shocked your breeder isn't keeping this guy in her breeding program. The others don't have the correct hair, and hopefully they have gone to people who have lots of time to dedicate to grooming.

Thank you for all that :). After reading this thread I do feel better now. She said all three of them are show quality. But she has no more room for another dog. She kept two to show from the previous litter ... One of them was pictured above. She is selling the other two pups to show homes..... I put a deposit on him whe he was only 7 days old so there wasn't much information on him at the time :). But I did pay the show price... She doesn't give a discount for "pet" dogs. She made it a point to say that show or companion they are the same rate because she puts the same amount of work into it. And she probably has enough people after her dogs so she can get away with that . A little impulsive in my end , but it all worked out so I'm grateful.

Bonnie hair looks just like my Leila's hair....wavy! I absolutely love the waves! When my Leila is wet is turns curly. She even has some waves on her face which isnt fun since I am always trying to comb it out. How do you get Bonnie hair around her face to look so straight? Or is it naturally straight like that?
