Can't stop fretting over something that is silly. 1 Attachment(s) Ok, please don't judge me harshly but I can't shake this uneasiness over finding out that my pup will have a thin silk coat versus the hard silk (thick) that his litter mates have. I know this sounds terrible.... I still love him and think he is the cutest little guy. But I envy the other coat... It's what I always wanted. A poofy puppy cut into adulthood. It's always been my preference. I'm scared his skin will show through or he will look scraggly with it short. What are your guys experiences with this? Puppy cut photos of thin silk adults are much appreciated. as well on anything i can do to help his coat. Is there a chance his coat will thicken up and catch up to his sisters as an adult ? Right now she seems so much bigger because she is such a poof ball. |
What makes you think he will have a thin silk coat? I am not familiar with the term "hard silk", is that like what is called cotton coat? It takes about 2 years of changes for the coat to fully mature, and I'll bet he has plenty of gorgeous hair. Relax and be patient, and he will have a wonderful coat. My Yorkie Tiki has a silky coat, which many prefer because it doesn't tangle and matt as much as a cotton coat. I kept her hair long for a while because she was so thin. Then I cut it short on her back and only keep the face and legs long, and I love it so much more. |
1 Attachment(s) Hard silk is what my breeder says they describe it as at shows. It's a silky coat but is thicker. Thick and Silky. These two dogs are her dogs and both had really silky hair. But you can clearly see the thicker coat. Cotton was a completely different texture, but thick too... I like it as well. |

Basil is adorable. His coat looks very nice to me. Either way he is beautiful. I have to standard yorkies/ Pixie has a silky coat, Roxie and Cali have cottony coats. Pixie is a dream to groom, the other 2 not so much. |
I think he is far to young to tell what kind of coat he will have. |

For standard Yorkies, "hard silk" refers to the texture of the hair, not thickness. My understanding is that silky silk is preferable. Often the silkiest of coats start out a little sparse and are slow growing. You can ask this question in the show section of this forum and get some more feedback. Puppy coats mature at different rates. Max's matured quickly, whereas Teddy's was still changing well into his second year -- ETA: they are full brothers. |
My pup looks just like yours and at almost 7 months he has more hair than I can handle most days. I think he will be beautiful all grown up. |
2 Attachment(s) Bonnie had the softest hair, ever, and she had a ton of it! But if I shaved her too short it was like scalping her. I kept her body short, but not shaved to the skin short and it looked just fine. I left her legs and tail long and did a nice balanced trim on her face. Sounds like I still have hope then! I think you are right on the def of hard silk. The Breeder probably just gave me her best guess from her experience. She used to show yorkies before switching to biewers. Wannabe , I'll still pray for a coat like your pups. And Teresa , that cut is so cute! Did you do it yourself?? He looks like he has a thick coat too. I just hope he has a lot of whatever coat he has lol |
How old is your dog? The photo you show does not look all that thin for a Yorkie pup. Adult coat won't be in until he is almost a year and it could continue to thicken after that. Not all pups develop at the same rate. Some breeders have been very surprised by the adult version of the pup they sold as pet quality. |

I didn't really ask the breeder because I didn't want to insult her puppy, ( if someone asked that much about my puppy it would bother me). All I asked was what she thought he would have. She has been showing them for about 40 years or so, and probably gave me her best guess. And then I went home and started freaking out. |
