Itchy,Flakeyskin on my 2 year old Yorkie My 2 year old Yorkie has itchy ,flakey skin. I feed her Nurto Pro food I get at Petco that is suppose to be good for skin and coat.She is on her 3rd bag. I was giving her Iiames before and she did not have this skin problem. Could it be the food or something else? |
I'm not exactly sure what this could be...she could be allergic to something as simple as the shampoo you use or a dye in her food. When did you first notice it? Were there any changes around that time in products you used? Have you contacted her vet to rule allergies out? A natural remedy I've used on myself and dogs for itchy skin is coconut oil. |
The food you are feeding is very high in corn and other ingredients that may effect multiple Ares of your pet's health. It may have some additive that is supposed to help the skin but apparently it is not working. A good quality grain free food might help. Omega 3 supplements are very good for supporting the skin and coat. Most pet shampoo contain sulphate and other chemicals that strip the skin and coat. Using good quality ALL natural products will help condition skin and coat without being harsh. |

The vet takes a skin sample by gently scraping it w/a scalpel or cotton tipped applicator & looks under the microscope to determine if it's bacterial, fungal, parasitic, etc. According to what's found, there might be some medications or RX shampoos &/or wipes prescribed. If it's just dry skin, a good coconut based shampoo will do wonders like ColesMommy01 mentioned. Espree is great, I recommend using a conditioner also w/every bath. Also what gracielove said, a good fish oil w/omega 3 is wonderful for the skin & hair. |
I am feeding Diva Nutro Natural Choice Grain Free. The coconut oil do you rub it on her then bathe her or do you put some over her food? This food says(the only brand guaranteed to improve skin&coat). Can you give them fish oil tablets that are for humans? |

Like others said a grain free diet could help. We do this with Gizmo and he still gets dried out so I puncture a fish oil pill and squeeze it on his breakfast everyday. It does wonders! |
Thanks for all info. I will try the coconut oil and also the fish oil on food. Since Diva is already eating a grain free food. I was leary about the coconut oil on skin don't want for her to be too oily. |
Just a little tidbit of information for you concerning pet food. The pet food industry is "self regulated." There are no restrictions concerning the information they put on their packaging. They do not have to list everything they put in the food and they can be very deceptive about their claims. The FDA has allowed the pet food industry to include some very appalling products in pet foods. Every pet owner should do their own investigation into what they are actually feeding their pets. The pet food industry has become a multi-million dollar industry due to lack of oversight and restrictions. |
So what are you all feeding your furry babies? Diva would rather eat chicken breast (boiled) than her food. Some people say that that is bad. Any thoughts? |
Gracie is on Stella & Chewy's brand of raw dog food. We go between the freeze dried and the frozen. I do still make her some homemade meals with a variety of all natural meats, some organic fruit and veggies with some food based supplements mixed in. She loves the S&C 's. It was one of the few commercial brands she would eat. It's a good company. There are not many out there that you can trust. The lady that started the company had a very sick dog that was not responding to veterinary care. I found the company after getting a pup that refused to eat dog food. I started reading labels and doing some investigation of my own. It was a very eye opening experience. It boarders on criminal - what they are doing in that industry. |
When I brought Kenzie home she was a bit itchy. I switched her to the BlueBuffalo grain free that the other dogs were eating. They also got Chicken and Rice with veges that I made with their kibble in the morning. She continued to be flakey and itchy. I have sense switched everyone to Turkey and potatoe by BB,I rub Espree leave in conditioner or cocoanut oil into her skin and fur every morning,not very much. As long as she gets a bath every 7 to 10 days she is flake and itch free. Due to the very cold weather here and 3 cases of the flue during the holidays,the dogs went 14 days between baths and Kenzie was just beginning to be a little flakey. She is mostly black so it is easy to see. Taking her off of chicken and moisturizing her skin has made a great difference. |

I found with my 4 yr old girl Sakura that the Shampoo you use matters too. She has allergies. I usually use the Happytails Comfy Dog Oatmeal shampoo I got from a doggie boutique, along with a grain free food, but then they moved away and I couldn't find it anymore to get more. So to the vet we went and they gave us the dog version of Benadryl which helped but not as much as the shampoo. I have now found that shampoo online and back using it my girl is just about back to her normal self! Love it! |
Thank you all for all the helpful information. I have put some coconut oil on her.Also I started putting some fish oil on her food.The food is another thing ....I do feed Diva the grain free dog food but she likes to eat with me. Someone also told me to only bathe her every 4-6 weeks that I am bathing Diva too much. Diva goes outside to potty and I bathe her weekly. At the time she started itching I had used a different shampoo on her and also it was warmer at my daughter's than at my home and and it was also gas heat where Diva is used to electric heat.:animal36:animal-pa:aimeeyork:love::thumbs up |
