Bald Eagle In The Sky Crab Bait and I were on a walk the day before yesterday and a bald eagle flew directly over us. CB was on a leash already so no big deal today. Just a reminder to small dog owners, you not only need to watch out for loose dogs and coyotes, you need to keep an eye to the sky and trees. Robyn, my better half, watched a poodle get taken away for a lunch date with a bald eagle years ago at a state park nearby so we know it is very important to be vigilant. The owner was heart broken and really not that far away. CB is usually off leash for most of our walks but always super close. LOL He's old and slow, I can keep up! Keep an eye to the sky if you have eagles ever in your area! :) |
So scary! I never thought about this being an issue until we went to florida 2 years ago & Huey was running on the beach off leash. 2 ladies came up to me & told me how birds of prey can snatch up a llittle dog. Scare me to death! Good reminder! |
At our dog park a hawk picked up a chihuahua and carried it off. Even smaller birds of prey can take a small dog. I never let Zoey out at night because of owls and coyotes. |
I'm always really cautious as there are peregrine falcons and red tail hawks hanging in my hood. I stopped going to our lovely ravine because there has been several spottings of coyotes. |
Pickles was "stalked" by an owl at my parents' house over at the beach. I grabbed him and hid him under my jacket and walked back to the house (wanted to run, but didn't want to amp up Mr. Owl anymore than he was already). It was scary! We've also had a hawk interested when P and P are in our back yard - and we live in San Jose, a large kind of urban city. We don't ever let them out alone and supervise closely when they're in our back yard. They're leashed anywhere else we go outside. |
Birds of prey are beautiful and powerful. We have a lot of them around me. I saw a red tail hawk take out a large rabbit. Galen only goes out on a BB harness and leash. |
Until I joined YT, I never knew a thing about he predator bird/small dog problem! But it's a serious one and have read more than one horror story here and many near-misses. Thankfully your bald eagle stayed in the sky! |
We have hawks and owls here, and some pretty gigantic crows. Not sure about crows but I know the owls and hawks will pick them up in no time. I've heard 2 instances where that happened. So Maverick (a solid 3 1/2 puppy lbs) only goes out on a leash with us. It's funny though because I wanted to adopt a dog from a rescue a couple years ago who only adopts to people with a fenced yard and doggy door, so I would have been turned down. Because unsupervised in a yard is obviously safer than on leash with me. ;) |
The idea of a bird snatching up Puff is terrifying to me. Puff is always in a harness on a leash, even in our fenced backyard. I'm trying to talk my husband into fencing a smaller area within the backyard and having a top of some kind on it. |
we back up to the water so we have eagles, crows, cranes, geese and some turkey buzzard things. Jess is NEVER alone outside..ever..They had a yorkie pup down the street picked up by a hawk. Luckily it struggled enough that is dropped it. I don't know how serious the damage to it was |
We have chicken hawks and vultures here on base on top of snakes . Neither of our dogs are out by themselves at anytime...the chances of anything happening is just too great. It only takes a second for something to happen. |
Those were all really good responses and observations! Thank You very much. Our lil Gucci is never outside unsupervised. Keep an eye to the sky! |
A large hawk swooped down on Bella in my back yard, and I was standing right beside her! Scary. |
Yes you can't be too careful! Large owls are the biggest bird threat, but here in the Wild Kingdom a.k.a Colorado, we have everything. Hawks, owls, coyotes, cougars, bobcat, you name it. LOL, "Crab Bait"!!! How did he get THAT name?? :D |

His mamma just reminded me of the story, a stranger on a dock in the San Juans referred to him as bait because of his size, that evolved in to me calling him "Crab Bait". We catch dungeness crabs here in Washington. Very tasty! |
