My suggestion is to find a decent food and if your little one eats it readily just stick with it. Changing their food continually makes for a picky eater. Wanted to welcome you and your little guy to YorkieTalk...hope you find it fun but yet informative at the same time.

personally I would switch, there are better foods out there, solid gold, wellness, acana, merrick, natural balance nutro has had alot of recalls probably not that,,, switch the food over a week or so if you decide to change foods

You can read ingredients on this site and not have to stand in the store for an hour reading labels. They have an informed opinion about ingredients but it is totally up to you to make your own decision about what is best for your dog.

I used to look for a good food that was made for small dogs and had to give up. I finally decided quality was more important than the size of the food. If it is a good food your dog should not have to eat a lot of it to get the right amount of nutrients anyway. The amount of protein is not as important as the quality of protein unless you have a dog that has some sort of disease or defect that causes serious digestive problems.

There is a woman who is quite a advocate for pet owners who attends many of the pet food industry meetings and has done a ton of research into pet foods. Sadly, the truth of the matter is hard to "digest." Like many big money industries corruption creeps in. If you are ever interested in finding out more about pet foods here is the link:

I feed Wellness....but we've tried lots of different foods in our house. Due to health issues and them just being plain picky, we found our way there. They've been on it for 6 months or more now and my senior's stomach problems have become much less of a problem.

Both my boys eat canned food. I have Wellness "core" small breed out and they nibble on it when they want as well(which is very little these days).

I've also been cooking more for the boys. I've been making chicken and rice and I mix that in with their canned wellness. They also get a daily vitamin. I would like to branch out to cooking other things...but I am afraid of giving my older guy an upset tummy.

It seems like everyone has a differing opinion on what the best food is...there are arguments made against almost every style of feeding....and it gets rather confusing to "know" which method, or which brand is best....so I think it's best to pick something that works for you and your dog.

The Dog food advisor is also recommended by Vets. If you look on your dog food bag it should say approved by AAFCO. If it does not find out why. Also if you check with your veterinarian they sometimes have a list of foods recommended. They seem to be following the Dog Food Advisor.

This is my opion...If we use food that is only approved dog foods, then it lets the dog food companies know we want the best food for our best friends and it will force them to improve.

I find that most vets don't recommend holistic foods because they don't usually have a nutritionist on staff and normally don't go through the same testing as the foods like science diet, Royal Canin, and Purina that they do recommend. Is this a holistic vet maybe that your talking about?

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions!! So far he loves the Wellness. It will brava slow transition over time bc as I stated before he really loves his science diet also. I chose to switch bc I wanted to give him an healthier option. Happy New Year to all and thanks again for your wonderful advice

No, It is just my regular veterinarian. I wanted all my animals on the best food possible and I asked him. They gave me the link to the dog food advisor for approved dog foods. I then I started reading about nutrition and what was in the foods. I also took my Maltese Kassi to Virginia Tech Medical Regional College of Veternary Medicine because she had Maltese Encephalitis. I again wanted to make sure she was on the best food. Dr. Theresa Pancotto, Assistant Professor of Nerology said look for foods that say on the bag AAFCO approved. Mine was approved.
I sadly lost my beloved Kassi to Encephalitis on 11-6-13. You can see my tribute to her on my blog as well as the art that will be hug on the walls of Virginia Tech.

Science Diet wasn't good for our yorkie, she had a terrible allergy, her coat looked greasy and it all stopped when we switched to RC. No allergies, her coat condition is great and no upset tummy.
SD is a big no-no for us.
