Eating late helped Gracie with this problem. She figured it out herself though. We hadn't resorted to pepcid since it wasn't happening all the time but one night, when we had her kibble bowl in our bedroom (we werein the middle of moving and didn't want her wandering around the house) she woke us up around midnight with her crunching! She did it the next few nights and so now we bring her kibble and water into our room every night (she sleeps with us of course!) And like clockwork she's crunching away around midnight and she hasn't thrown up bile since. |
I would be careful with any antacid long term. I'm speaking from my own history as I am a paraplegic , but over time it started causing really bad absorption problems, where my body did not absorb calcium properly, which led to high potassium, which if I did not have bloodwork done every 3 months and found out, would have shortly stopped my heart. I myself would maybe try a sensitive stomach food, as well as leaving him kibble o snack on at night while you are asleep. Gizmo happens to be one of those late night snackers as well :-) |
We had to stop free feeding the pups due to Finnigan becoming very overweight and ran into that problem with Gwenni. Tried giving her carrots/treats before bed and it didn't work, so we give Pepcid AC before bed. If the vet checked him out I wouldn't be worried. |
Out of curiosity....does your little guy happen to have nasal congestion from allergies or anything?? One of my pups has a stuffy nose and sometimes I think it drains into his stomach and upsets it when he's sleeping on his side. I have a friend who has the same problem....throws up phlegm in the morning because it's been draining into their stomach all night. |
Also due to it being on an empty stomach it could be bile reflux and not acid reflux. If its bile reflux, there could be gallstones or a problem itself with the gallbladder function. |

I would personally, definitely, not be interested in long term use of an antacid...for me or my Yorkies. |

Sophie Kate has the same issue in the morning so we resolved it by giving her a lite snack of dry kibble before bed. It has helped so much and now she knows she gets a bedtime snack and paces around while I am getting ready for bed waiting for her yummy snack (my term for it, her terms are give me the food woman). |
Turbo used to throw up yellow bile all the time. Vet said to give a snack b4 bedtime & split his meals into 3. He was prescribed pepcid a/c & tagamet. I didn't give it to him tho bc I didn't think it was an acid problem. Did a NutriScan test recently & it turns out he's intolerant/sensitive to certain proteins, like chicken. Since removing the offending foods from his diet, he has not thrown up since. I am not saying to do the test bc it is expensive, but when dogs are intolerant of a food, they throw up. I would stop all treats & start a limited ingredient diet, that way it's easier to pin point the offending food/ ingredient. Give him something to eat b4 bedtime if he throws up early in the morning. If he stops throwing up yellow bile, it was simply bc he had an empty stomach. But since this started 9 months ago, I think it's some type of food intolerance. How are his stools? |
Didn't know nutro ultra had a history? He's been on the same food since a puppy with no issues |
